Leadership, to me, is more than just being able to tell people what to do. You have to be able to respect them, listen to their ideas, and make them feel equal. It’s not about setting yourself above everyone else; it’s the ability to influence others in a positive manner. A good leader is someone who inspires others to dream bigger or become that better person they’ve always wanted to be. Leadership entails bringing out the best in everyone, or at least being able to see their best qualities. Someone could be thrust into a leadership position, but lack those qualities, therefore, holding a leadership position doesn’t automatically qualify you as a leader. These highly specific qualities require constant learning, understanding, and growth, and are characteristics that even the best leaders are still trying to perfect.

It required choreographing and teaching dances every week, giving advice on topics ranging from boys to physics, being that shoulder to cry on, reaching out to the girls who were afraid to ask for help, and coordinating with sponsors and important figures in the community about performances. It forced me to pull everything together and get organized, and while I’m still insanely absent minded, I now have a system of more organized chaos than just a mass free-for-all. Having this leadership experience has already influenced my time here at Nebraska. I’m more comfortable talking to professors because of my experience coordinating events with adults, and I’m doing a pretty okay job keeping up with all of my homework now that I’m a little more organized. My most meaningful high school leadership position and the one that most influenced my character, however, was getting to be a peer mentor for the special education program.
