Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. The amount of athleticism that is required for a dancer to posses is undeniably astonishing. On the other hand, some believe that dance is more of an art than a sport due to the thought that dance is a way of expression. Similar to football, the art of dancing engages an equal amount or more of extreme physical effort. Before all else, the athletic from of art is believed to have originated thousands of years ago. The most common reported injury is a ligament sprain, which occurs in an estimate of 30 percent of football players. It is noted that the most affected areas by this type of injury are the ligaments of the ankle and medial collateral ligaments of the knee.
In contrast, dancers reach the amount or surpass the amount of such physical effort as much as any football team. The statistics of dance related injuries show that the percentage increases when compared to the contact sport. The percentage of sprains on a dancers body part is a striking 52% where broken bones fall to a 14% rate. The most common cause of these injuries are mostly linked to falling. The ages of injured dancers vary from ages 3-19. The percentage of children ages 3-5 developing an injury are a rate of 4%. Where the percentage of a child age 6-10 receiving an injury are a rate of 17%. As the adolescents grow older the amount of injuries increase dramatically. Kids ages 11-14 are at a rate of 38% where ages 15-19 are at a rate of 41%. Since a dancer physically moves all round the room and/or floor they use every body part necessary to complete the movement given the choreography. Bringing the placement of a dancers injury around the whole body to a certain proportion. For example, an injury to the head falls at a 12% whereas an injury to the knee spikes up to 17%.
