Over the years physical therapists have gained a larger understanding and knowledge of dance therapy and how this source of therapy can do for both the body and brain (Charlier). Having an “outlet” to express emotion can really be the line between depression and understanding. If the stress is not controlled it leads to anxiety and if the anxiety is not controlled it is the cause of depression. Dance therapy is to help these stages reflect off and not be as affecting to society. Sometimes just being able to express the emotions being held without being “wrong” for it can be the line between good and bad decisions. “ Utilizing art for stress relief on a more individual level” (Sherman). Healing on a personal level is what is needed for society by expressing emotion through movement and passion. Through dance there is always a specific role and or character that the choreographer wants to see being incorporated but still needed to see the personal emotion brought through the expression of the moves. To motivate children with disabilities, physical movement, such as dance therapy helps create an open world with both the children and the adults (Dieringer). I went through years of physical therapy. I did routines throughout the day under the supervision of a physical therapist assistant to regain my movement in my arm. I believe that as a physical therapist assistant, I will be able to provide therapy for all types of individuals through many different arrangements of activities. As a physical therapist assistant I want to bring dance to the forefront as a major therapy
As I have participated in dance class, I have been able to express my feelings. Additionally, after dance class I find that I am able to see the bright side of situations. With these great benefits of dance, I was not surprised to find that there is an occupation known as a Dance Therapist or Dance/ Movement Therapist (DMT) that helps people improve their overall well being through Dance/ Movement Therapy. To be more specific, Dance/ Movement Therapy is “an exciting field of health that provides emotional and physical support for clients and individuals,” according to the article “Career Profile Dance Movement Therapist” by About.com Careers. We will examine specifically the pattern associated with beliefs about what it means to “dance”. Our Free Child is polluted with subconscious patterns of meaning about dance. This effects our choices, functioning and relationships as men and women in respect to what type of therapy suits me as both client and professional. We will use DMT experiences to observe and explore our individual patterns of what dance means to us while TA will serve to analyze the meaning of the old and to integrate new patterns of meaning for
Data was collected through one-on-one interviews with each study subject. The time and location varied depending on the participant. A very detailed timeline of each participant's dance history was taken into account. Each participant was asked to describe all injuries, both minor and major, indicate a cause, precautions utilized, treatments, and time in between injuries. For the participants who have never reported a dance-related injury, they were asked to describe all precautions taken as well as the reasons as to why they have never endured a dance-related injury.
Dancing is like all the resilience: emotional resilience, physical resilience, social resilience, and mental resilience. I say it is emotional resilience because while you are dancing you are expressing your feeling to people when they watch you dance. Also if you enjoy dancing then, it will also build your emotional resilience. Dancing gives a return on self-investment because it helps connect to your mind emotions and spirit. I also say that dancing is a physical resilience because they move with confidence because they are experiencing the music that they are dancing to. Also, dancing is a social resilience because you get to connect with people, be with people and just have fun with random people that you probably had never meet before.
Dance is fundamental to a child’s development, it satisfies the physical, mental and emotional needs of both body and mind (textbook). There are many ways in which dance can impact a persons development. Dance has can influences the developmental domains such as social- through weariness of others, preforming and collaborations, cognitive- through following others choreography, creating their own or following the music, physical- through muscle control.
Dancing has also challenged me into channeling my creativity in the form of choreography. Anyone could go to a dance recital and admire the grace of a dancer's movement, but the majority do not realize the dedication and hard work that goes into bringing that to life. It takes hours upon hours of practice and patience to create a piece so beautiful that it takes the audience's breath away. Moments like those, where every muscle in your body is screaming from exhaustion and you can't seem to catch your breath, are the moments in which people would normally give up, but I've learned to push through and the end result has always been worthwhile. If dance hadn't become such a tremendous part of my life I wouldn't be the strong person and leader that I now am today. It's taught me to step up to the plate and better myself by helping others become more talented
Dance began as a form of communication and storytelling. Thousands of years ago dancing served as a way for people to tell a story and helped distract themselves of the hardships they faced. Furthermore, dance was a form of storytelling through communication, which then turned into using storytelling through dance as entertainment. According to the History World, many dancers during the BC time danced in front of only a few people to get a story across. That later turned into hundreds of thousands of people as dance was used by many. Today, dance is also a form of entertainment and storytelling, but in a modern sense. However, today perfection and technique are stressed more than they were in the past. Yet, the passion for dance has not changed. Many dancers who share this passion also have many of the same qualities. Among a discourse community of trained dancers, one expects to find individuals who are healthy and active athletes, expect perfection from themselves through competition, and religiously attend dance performances.
Dance therapy is nowhere close to being a therapy for injury, it is a therapy for a mental illness or just to relieve of something that someone is carrying heavily on their shoulders.“One of the most fun forms of anxiety therapy I can think of is dance therapy. So despite your possible misgivings about looking goofy and or falling on your face you shouldn’t be afraid to get on a dance floor. This is because there is real evidence to suggest that dancing can help improve your mood and serve as an excellent anxiety therapy” (Dooley 1) . One of the things that people are carrying heavily on their shoulders is anxiety. Dance is a great therapy for anxiety and has helped many children, teens, and adults over the
According to a study published in the American Journal of Health Education, dancing increases life satisfaction while Swedish researchers found that adolescent girls who had problems like anxiety, depression, stress as well as back and neck pain, saw a positive shift in their metal health, emotional state and mood after they took dance classes. What was most impressive however was that the boost lasted up to eight months after the sessions ended.
Dance is my therapy. Ever since I was a little girl, I have known that I was going to live the rest of my life dancing. Anytime I find myself in a bad mood, I dance, and all of a sudden I feel happy again. My body is completely aware of when I stop dancing for a period of time. Usually, Christmas break is the worst because of the cold and lack of outdoor activities. If I spend the majority of my time relaxing and doing nothing, my body does not like it. I go from constant movement, all day and every day, the demanding, physical toll of dancing my body endures, to complete relaxation is like running a marathon and then going to sleep immediately after crossing the finish line. After I spend the two weeks of Christmas break doing nothing, not only have I lost a lot of strength and flexibility, but I have lost an even larger amount of motivation and passion. Once I start back to dance, I reconnect with the passion and love I have for it.
Dance therapy can be helpful to a wide range of patients--from psychiatric patients to those with cancer to lonely elderly people. Dance therapy is often an easy way for a person to express emotions, even when his or her experience is so traumatic he or she can't talk about it. It is frequently used with rape victims and survivors of sexual abuse and incest. It can also help people with physical deficits improve their self-esteem and learn balance and coordination.
