Having an “outlet” to express emotion can really be the line between depression and understanding. If the stress is not controlled it leads to anxiety and if the anxiety is not controlled it is the cause of depression. Dance therapy is to help these stages reflect off and not be as affecting to society. Sometimes just being able to express the emotions being held without being “wrong” for it can be the line between good and bad decisions. “ Utilizing art for stress relief on a more individual level” (Sherman). Dance began as a form of communication and storytelling. Thousands of years ago dancing served as a way for people to tell a story and helped distract themselves of the hardships they faced. Furthermore, dance was a form of storytelling through communication, which then turned into using storytelling through dance as entertainment. According to the History World, many dancers during the BC time danced in front of only a few people to get a story across. That later turned into hundreds of thousands of people as dance was used by many. Today, dance is also a form of entertainment and storytelling, but in a modern sense. However, today perfection and technique are stressed more than they were in the past. Yet, the passion for dance has not changed. Many dancers who share this passion also have many of the same qualities. Among a discourse community of trained dancers, one expects to find individuals who are healthy and active athletes, expect perfection from themselves through competition, and religiously attend dance performances.

I went through years of physical therapy. I did routines throughout the day under the supervision of a physical therapist assistant to regain my movement in my arm. Dancing has also challenged me into channeling my creativity in the form of choreography. Anyone could go to a dance recital and admire the grace of a dancer's movement, but the majority do not realize the dedication and hard work that goes into bringing that to life. It takes hours upon hours of practice and patience to create a piece so beautiful that it takes the audience's breath away. Moments like those, where every muscle in your body is screaming from exhaustion and you can't seem to catch your breath, are the moments in which people would normally give up, but I've learned to push through and the end result has always been worthwhile. If dance hadn't become such a tremendous part of my life I wouldn't be the strong person and leader that I now am today. It's taught me to step up to the plate and better myself by helping others become more talented
