Edgar Allen Poe is known for his ability to use dark themes in his literary works, and touch the readers with these writing techniques. He is credited with mixing his emotions with his literary pieces to make them great to read and provides the reader with emotion. Which is no different from “A Dream Within a Dream” that portrays a tale of a lost loved one that has a predominant impact on his life and his literary works.In Edgar Allen Poe’s “A Dream Within a Dream” gothic themes are used to manipulate the reader’s emotions which helps to provide an insight into his world of writing.

In his poetry, Poe uses many gothic themes to produce a desired pathos towards the reader. This pathos evokes a sense of darkness which is a prominent theme in his literary works. This sense of darkness helps produce different themes and tones that help the reader feel his pain, and in turn makes it easier for the reader to be able to identify these techniques. Poe states in the poem “While I weep — while I weep!” (Line 18) and “Can I not grasp;Them with a tighter clasp”(Line 19-20). One of the many stages of grief is denial and we can see this in lines 19-20. The reader can infer that Poe does not understand why he lost this person and knows he has no way of bringing them back.
