Darkness In Edgar Allan Poe's Poetry

Edgar Allan Poe was well known for his dark stories such as, “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart.” His stories and poems focused mainly on death and the sinister side of a man’s mind. In general, many of his main characters were not mentally stable or were dealing with alcohol abuse. Poe’s life never seemed to offer him a break, he lived hardships after hardships. Nevertheless, his pain and problems contributed to numerous of his writings and poems. The reader is able to see the connections between his life and the characters. “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat” although have many similarities in style, also have many differences.

Both of Poe’s texts “A Dream Within a Dream” and “The Cask of Amontillado” are contrasting, but they are also similar in some ways. Both of the texts portray their ideas in a dark and gloomy matter. The poem presents its theme on the beach with pitiless waves, whereas the short story is related with murder and driven with evil intentions. These similarities are all aspects of Dark Romanticism. These Dark Romantics reveal that they will do anything to reach their goal. For example, Montresor explains, “AT LENGTH I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled” (Poe). The main themes of Edgar Allan Poe’s works are death, perversity, revenge and destruction. The settings he employed in the given short stories, especially in The Fall of the House of Usher and The Black Cat are Gothic. As a master of short stories of horror, Edgar Allan Poe is knowledgeable, learned and imaginative. He could skillfully manipulate the words in his literary works to create everything people can think of. The masterful use of the symbols, objects intensify the readers’ nerve as the typical elements of horror in Poe’s short stories, and therefore it is also a feature which makes Poe 's stories different from other writers.

Many people can relate to the feeling of desperation that comes with acknowledgement of a person’s cosmic insignificance.
