The Operations department at Paradise is managed by Glenn Miltenberger. As Operations Manager, Mr. Miltenberger is responsible for the oversight of his operators along with oversight from TVA. At Paradise there will be a 12- hour day shift and an 8-hour night shift crew that is responsible for cleaning duties along with their plant duties and there will be operators who work 12 hour shifts. TVA is responsible for hiring the operators and other personal that aid in keeping the plant continuously operational. All Operators work 7:00 to 7:00 and shift change occurs at approximately 6:45. During this time the different Operators on shift will take turns and describe what happened during their respectful rounds and operations (Daniels). Day shift …show more content…

A general inspection entails inspecting pipes, valves and other surrounding equipment for breaks, leaks or loud unfamiliar noises (Schmidt). If any of those serious problems are found, the Operator will report it to the Operations Supervisor. During the round, the day shift operator will test and record the chemical levels in the demineralized water from the Green River and fill chemical injection tanks and HRSG chemical injectors (Daniels). On Wednesday and Thursday of each week (DO’s) will test all water storage tanks to obtain the Langelier Index.” It’s an indicator of the degree of saturation of calcium carbonate in water. It is calculated using the pH, alkalinity, calcium concentration, total dissolved solids, and water temperature of a water sample collected. If the pH is less than the actual pH (the LI is a positive number), the water will tend to deposit calcium carbonate and is scale-forming (nonaggressive). If the pH is greater than the actual pH (the LI is a negative number), the water is not saturated and will dissolve calcium carbonate (aggressive)” (Langelier). On …show more content…

As this Operator is preparing to go on duty he is required to do a walk around visual inspection to see if things are performing correctly and look to be in order before the first round (Schmidt). Throughout the plant, the NO’s will listen for unusual or loud noises, check pumps and tanks for any kind of leaks, try to notice any unusual smells and look for broken lights including overhead pendant lights and small equipment lights and check equipment gauges to ensure they’re operating in the appropriate ranges. The operator will also monitor the feed water flow meter system from the Green River to ensure the correct amount of water is being taken in for the plant and to see if the intake pump is remaining within the pressures rated for it. He will use the fluid level indicators on all the tanks to record all tank levels and will inspect the HRSG ammonia sprays units for ammonia leaks (Daniels). One special activity that the NO’s do is a midnight reading and report. It’s simply readings taken at midnight for gallons in and gallons out for boiler fuel and water storage levels in the tanks in feet and inches (Schmidt). The plant uses a daily spreadsheet where the numbers are entered so the plant efficiency can be
