Deafness Research Paper

Chapter 2 delves into the lives of families with deaf children. It also goes into the genealogy of the Deaf community. It is a common factor that Deaf parents would prefer having a Deaf child, simply because having a hearing child would be more complicated for them. This does not mean that they would love their hearing children any less, The birth of a Deaf baby secures that the legacy of more Deaf children is possible. They are more than happy to celebrate when this kind of news is brought their way.

In chapter 4, it explains how Deaf people live in a hearing world. Some people who have grown up with Deaf people really don't see Deaf people as any different than themselves. Verditz had an idea that sign language comes from spoken languages, English and ASL are similar and different from each other having English as my first language has helped me learn ASL but the sentence structures are very different from English. Sign language is a visual language.

In mainstream American society, we tend to approach deafness as a defect. Helen Keller is alleged to have said, "Blindness cuts people off from things; deafness cuts people off from people." (rnib.org) This seems a very accurate description of what Keller's world must have been. We as hearing people tend to pity deaf people, or, if they succeed in the hearing world, admire them for overcoming a severe handicap. We tend to look at signing as an inferior substitute for "real" communication. We assume that all deaf people will try to lip-read and we applaud deaf people who use their voices to show us how far they have come from the grips of their disability. In this 2 hours of deaf history I found it very interesting. It taught me a lot about deaf history. In those 2 hours I found out about how people would treated deaf people. Deaf people were treated very badly, they were treated like something was wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with them even though they can’t hear, nothing is wrong with them they are still humans with feeling. Deaf people were told that they had to go to a school so they could learn to talk (oral schools). In those they were not aloud to sign or use hands in class. They would try and teach deaf kids how to speak by putting their hands on the teacher's throat to feel the vibrations of when the teacher speak and the kids had to copy that feeling on themselves and when

Have you ever felt like there was nothing that you can do for your child? In the book, Deaf Like Me, by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley, I can the journey that Lynn’s parents had to take to get her help. This book was excellent I really liked the way that they described the ways that they tried to help Lynn to understand the world around her. In this book, I also saw how a mother and father will do anything for their child so that they can understand all that is around them. This book, is also a great asset to any family that might be unexpectedly thrown into a situation that they do not expect such as a deaf child.

American Annals of the Deaf is an educational journal that is committed to providing educational experiences of high quality as well as related services for the deaf. This journal has been around for over 150 years, and over time they have been dedicated to making sure that children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing are receiving quality assistance for their disability (NEED CITATION). In July 1996, they published a scholarly article in response to a survey Catherine Gillespie and Sandra Twardosz conducted about the literacy environment and different practices that children are receiving in a residential school for the deaf.

An adult that goes deaf feels they can lose alot; friends, a job, a marriage.

On Saturday, September 26, 2015, I attended the Deaf Rave event at the Pittsburgh Association of the Deaf. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Center for the Deaf hosted the event and all of the proceeds went towards the GPCC Sportsman Club. The event was a very laid back, enjoyable occasion. I went to the event alone but I met up with a fellow classmate after arriving and there were also a few ASL1 students who arrived a bit later. They have to communicate using their hands and faicial expressions, and have to find ways to talk with non-signing, hearing people. They face daily challenges that we wouldn’t even think about. They have to drive cars without being able to hear, they have to pay attention to their surroundings when driving and pay attention. But, deaf people are actually better drivers than hearing people becuase they are so used to paying so close attention to everything (Deaf Culture Facts That Might Surprise You). In order to understand non-signing hearing people, the deaf has to learn to read lips. This can be very difficult because some people talk very fast and deaf people cannot follow. Deaf and hard of hearing people are just like us. They are not any different, but hears like us. There is some common misunderstanding, that is really annoying for Deaf and hard of hearing people. Those misunderstanding are can you understands us? Are you able to drive? Do you need a wheelchair? Can you read and write? Do deaf people have sex? Etc.…These kinds of questions annoyed deaf people the most. People do not realize that deaf people do not have as much as difficulty as normal folks thinks that they have. They can do almost everything and just as much no less. Sometime, they begged to be considered the same as hearing folks. They want to be equals, respected, and value just as much as hearing people. Sometime, we forgot to ask ourselves.

Everyone belongs to a culture some people belong to multiple cultures but everyone belongs to at least one. A culture is “ the sum of the social categories and concepts we embrace in addition to our beliefs, behaviors and  practices; everything but the environment around us.” (ConleyA-3). Culture provides many things for individuals including; self-realization, moral values, discipline, and compassion. Most cultures are contained to a specific part of the world, however there are some cultures that are universal, one of those being the Deaf culture. The Deaf culture is also a unique culture because within this large culture are  multiple sub-cultures, that each person brings with them. But because there is an underlying disability that brings all of those in the Deaf culture together there is oftentimes a social barrier between the Deaf culture and the Hearing culture. During social gatherings where members of the Deaf and Hearing cultures are both represented, actions are guided by social norms in order to make social interactions accepted by both cultures.

I may not be considered part of the hearing culture due to my severe to profound hearing loss, but some people might be surprised to hear that I am not considered a part of the Deaf culture. A majority of the Deaf culture is very critical of those who assimilate with hearing people and accept hearing culture as their majority culture. I believe that every hearing impaired and deaf person is an individual and needs to do what is best for them instead of being worried about following the rules of the Deaf culture.

Imagine what life would be like with the inability to hear. Try to envision watching television without sound or watching an inaudible movie. There is a silence that has way of making the busiest scenes seem still. Now try to imagine a lively area filled with lots of laughter, roaring music, and a handful of birds chirping away. That imagery paints a scene of the plain difference between a hearing world and a deaf one. One world is capable of hearing and the other involves no incoming source of sound whatsoever. Understanding how deaf culture and how the hard of hearing work and live is important in order to comprehend the reasons behind why they do the certain things they do such as stare at others for a long period of time or the reason
