It was my senior year in high school when my mom told me that my cousin, Mayra, had given birth to a baby girl. However, child protective services decided that Mayra wasn’t adequate to take care of the child; due to her drug abuse. It was a calamitous knock, a knock that brought with it the worst of news that commenced a series of devastating events to follow for years to come. This knock arrived at our door at 5:00 a.m. one morning and it was my brother, Andrew. He refused to reveal the contents of his night, but in his insensible stupor he incessantly demanded for our help in finding his lost car, keys, phone, and wallet. After hours of much endeavor from each family member, Andrew’s car was discovered in a ditch with a blown out tire, his keys in another city miles away from the crash scene, and his wallet and phone were never recovered. My brother’s desperate knock and our cautious opening of the door revealed that Andrew’s misfortunes of that night had derived from the abuse of methamphetamine. This event remains in my mind as the initial incident that began our continuous familial struggle over the past five years.

As a child, I can vividly remember darting out of my room to escape my cousin Alex’s unstoppable torment. As I reached the living room, I leap onto the sofa bed, only to have him spring on me and then stick his tongue toward my face as I struggled to hold him back. I guess that’s the cost of our parents allowing us to watch the film Alien the previous night. Years later, I awaken to my cell phone ringing, as I roll over I notice it’s my other cousin Jason. My mind tends to run to disaster whenever I receive a call at an unusual hour. This time it truly was what I thought it was, my cousin Alex was dead. Although Alex and I weren’t the closest of family, as he lived in Chicago and I lived in Tampa, it’s astounding the impact a death can have
Addiction to substances represents one of the most insidious diseases known to mankind. Given the serious nature and sensitivity that surrounds addiction, the only viable path to recovery from this disease tends to be through spending time in a reputable drug and alcohol rehab treatment center. Any efforts to try to classify all addicts into one group represents nothing more than an exercise in futility.

Some of my peers would engage in drinking alcohol during house parties. There were always a few people getting drunk and starting a big commotion at the party. After graduating from high school, a few of my peers became addicted to alcohol and drugs. One of my peers was very popular when she was in high school. I was thinking to myself
Preventing substance abuse involves developing numerous strategic partnerships. Substance abuse is a multidisciplinary issue, and requires a correspondingly multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach. The strategy for drug abuse prevention must begin with segmenting the market, or analyzing the needs of the community. Is the greatest proportion of abusers in the community youth?
