Can a person kill themselves without even knowing it? In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W.Jacorbs, a loved one is lost and a division of the family takes place. The loss of Herbert was devastating. The question we all want to know, is who is responsible for Herbert’s death, and why? Herbert was loved by his family, so why did he die? Did Herbert bring this upon himself, or did Mr. and Mrs. White cause this on their son? There are many reasons that shows Herbert was responsible for his death. For example on page 36, Herbert stated “If only you cleared the house you might be happy. This shows that Herbert could have cause this upon himself, because if Mr.White would have made a wish for the house to be more clear or clean , this could have
Herbert was being sarcastic about the situation, but ended up foreshadowing his own death. “and something horrible…watching as you pocket your ill-gotten gains.” (Bottom of page .36) The horrible thing that Herbert mentioned enticed the paw to make Herbert into the terrifying creature that he made up. Herbert is saying that he will never see the money because the paw does not work. “and I bet I never shall.” (Middle page. 36) He is just foreshadowing his own death again. His not believing in the paw’s powers encouraged the paw to be sure that he would never see the money by killing him. Herbert told his father to make the wish that ended up killing him. “Well, wish for two-hundred pounds…” (Top page. 36) The next day, Herbert got killed in the machinery. The family got the money from Herbert’s death. As shown, Herbert is
Suicide is intentionally causing your own death out of despair. It is considered a behavior and may result from a form of mental illness, but is not classified as a distinct psychiatric disorder. It can stem from different factors such as personal, social, financial or historical well-being. ("Mental health and wellness," 2013)
He ends up dating the woman while moving down to the south. After the relationship has gone on for a while, Herbert girlfriend decides to break up with him over the vindictiveness over her. Herbert does not give up on the relationship, in fact, he still goes to see her when he has the chance. Herbert ex-girlfriend later put a restraining order against Herbert , which gets him deeply depressed. When Herbert was depressed he came up with a plan to win his girlfriend back. He wanted to plant a bomb at her house to save her after the explosion. It all went horribly wrong when his girlfriend’s nephew picked up the bomb and designated it, killing herself and destroying the house. In conclusion, Herbert unintentionally killed a child to win the heart of his girlfriend. Herbert was later sentenced on death row without the proper help. There were lots of relation between Herbert and Joe in their cases. First, none of them had the proper treatment in the court. The Judge, police, and jury wanted Joe and Herbert in jail for the acts they did. Second, they are both African-American in the south, which means no white man or woman really liked
Willy didn't really provide for his family. He wasn't a good salesman so he didn't make much money, and the money he did make he spent it on someone else. To help his family get money, he commits suicide to his family will get insurance money. It is hard to say if his death was selfish or selfless. Most people believe that when people commit suicide, they are being selfish for leaving family members who loved them behind. Willy's reason was that because he couldn't provide for his family because he was a bad salesmen while he was alive, he could provide for them with the insurance money while he's
Statement of Significance: Suicide or “self-killing” or “an act of taking one’s own life” according to Robert M. Martin. Now committing suicide is very common in nowadays anyone could be in danger of doing it, your mom, dad, brother, sister, uncle, and aunt could be going through this hard stage. I will tell you the main causes of suicide, the signs of
White’s fault for Herbert’s death. It says on (page 36) “I wish for 200 pounds” said the old man distinctly. This shows that Mr. White is the one that made the wish so he’s responsible. This also shows that Mr. white is crazy for making the wish because he said he had everything he
White made poor decisions throughout the story that only resulted in more hurt for her and Mr. White. In the middle of the night about a week after Herbert had died, she came to the realization that there were still two wishes left on the monkey’s paw. “The other two wishes, we’ve only had one… Go down and get it quickly, and wish our boy alive again” (114). Obsession clouded her judgement and she screamed at her husband to wish Herbert back to life until he complied. Her grief caused her to want her son back in any way possible, no matter the cost. She did not hear her husband warning her that it wasn’t a smart idea or that she had lost her mind. The way she was feeling may have been understandable, but she could have put her and her husband’s lives in danger, not allowing herself to see what was really in front of her. Bringing someone back from the dead always comes at a price, a humongous price, but either she was willing to pay that price or didn’t realize there was any risk at all. The demeanor of Mrs. White at the end of the story is clearly changed from who she was at the start; she went from a loving, kindly old lady to a deranged, obsessive mad woman who wouldn’t listen to reason. This personality shift comes as a result of the Whites’ first poor decision, so that not only was the life of their son was lost, but the sanity and rational thinking of Mrs. White was also lost among the
"If you must wish, wish for something sensible." The sergeant major says this knowing the horrible things that can go wrong. Things definitely go wrong. "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs is a horror story because, it has suspense, a monster, and supernatural happenings.
In the play Hamlet, written by Shakespeare, the protagonist, Hamlet shows a state of instability which eventually leads to his irreversible actions. Many events have led to Hamlet's insanity including his father’s death and his own mother marrying his uncle, the new king. This sets his enmity towards his uncle and results in his desire of killing him. On top of this, Hamlet has suicidal thoughts. The big question here, is whether or not Hamlet should be charged with homicide, manslaughter or neither. Homicide is a term used for the killing of a human being by another human being. Manslaughter is a crime of killing someone without malice and can be justified by a person’s mental instability. After reviewing Hamlet’s case, we find that
There are numerous reasons that might have caused Willy Loman to end his life. In Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, Loman is in conflict with his son, Biff Loman, his job as a salesman, and himself.
What causes a person to commit suicide? This has been an age-old question that is never easily (if ever) answered. Literature has been a great source in which to address the complexity of such a horrific self-act. Two exemplary dramatic literary authors tackled this subject head on within two years of eachother in Henrik Ibsen’s 1890 “Hedda Gabbler,” and August Strindberg’s 1888 “Miss Julie.” A woman’s life in the late 19th century was very difficult. James McFarlane frankly generally describes a middle and upper class women’s dilemma during this time period in his introduction to Henrik Ibsen Four Major Plays: “These women of the modern age, mistreated as daughters, as sisters, as wives, not educated in accordance with their talents,
One could belive that every time somethig bad would happen to him he blamed everyone else but himself. Willy felt so much pressure to pay off the house dept. Making the house dept play a huge role in this play. He put so much pressure on himself and with him not doing so well at work he became so frustrated and angry. He broke his wedding vows with the woman he promised to spend the rest of his life
Aarsland, Påhlhagen, Ballard, Ehrt and Svenningsson (2012) stated that people if the thought of suicide is not managed at the right time, the patient might end up killing himself or herself.
One of the consequences that Willy faced due to his hauntings was losing his mind. He lost his job because he was unable to focus and became useless to the company he was working for. Another consequence was Willy becoming suicidal. He attempted suicide multiple times, until he eventually succeeded. The consequences Willy faced not only effected him, but also his family. His wife Linda was constantly worried about him before his death, knowing that he was trying to kill himself. She states “The insurance inspector came. He said that they have evidence. That all these accidents in the last year—weren’t—weren’t—accidents” (Miller 1081). She was living day by day, hoping he would change his mind about it, but nothing she could do was enough to keep Willy sane and alive.
In today's society suicide as a result of someone else actions is a very common occurrence. In Hamlet, Ophelia is driven away from Hamlet because she is made to believe that he loves her, and when he treats her poorly again and again, she begins to go crazy. (Act 3 Scene 1) The subject behind this part of the tragedy seems to be a timeless tale. People will always be hurt by others actions, especially
