“There is a lot of stress out there, and to handle it, you just need to believe in yourself; always go back to the person that you know you are, and do not let anybody tell you different, because everyone is special and everyone is awesome,” said McKayla Maroney. Stress is a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems occurring in life. (Merriam-Webster) Physical symptoms of stress include: low energy, headaches, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and insomnia. (Hicks) There are different types of stress and also different way of handling it. When dealing with stress; take a time out. (SS- 1) Escape from what is causing the stress and start a different task. Having a good laugh with a group of friends is also a way to alleviate stress. Stress …show more content…
Sports are supposed to be the way I relieve my stress, but varsity sports have given me more to worry about. (BE-12) Throughout my years in high school, I have participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, and soccer. While playing sports, some of the things I stress about are injuries, making mistakes, working with the team and on my individual game, having time for schoolwork, trying to be a leader. (SS- 4) As an athlete, everyone is going to encountered injuries. At the end of my junior year, I had a knee injury that affected my soccer, softball, and basketball seasons. It stressed me out thinking about when I would be healthy again. It decreased my ability to perform at a competitive level without worrying about injuring myself more. Much of my free time was taken away while I was recovering and trying to regain the strength that I had lost. Sports …show more content…
While trying to be successful during school and sports, I worry about how I am portrayed to the people around me and how I could make a difference. (SS- 15) The way that others view me is what stresses me out the most between the two subjects. In sports, there is always an opportunity for someone to watch me as I perform. (BE 11) That is why making mistakes stress me out. I will try my hardest to influence other to be the best they can. In school, students are always comparing their success in school to others around them. For example, after taking a test many students ask what one received as a score and compare it to their own. This could influence one to do better or be self conscious on how they do in school. Embarrassed and secretive, I like to keep my scores to myself due to the fact that no matter what I receive someone will judge me for it. (BE- 2) With both sports and school together, I have to distribute the time I put forth in both activities in order to be
Stress and anxiety in the average college student. Selye (1936) defined stress as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change” (The American Institute of Stress, 2017). Stress can lead to feelings of anxiety. Anxiety is a normal part of life, but can be considered a type of worry or fear that can inhibit everyday life. College students show higher stress/anxiety than average individuals. Major sources of stress are from new responsibilities, campus living, money issues, and classwork (Ross, Niebling, & Heckert, 1999). There have been a number of studies circled around how stress can affect college students. Females and males show differences in anxiety/stress in college. (Misra and McKean (2000)) found that females

When I was a young child I was shy, socially awkward, and horribly insecure, so when I realized popularity would never be my strength I decided to put all my efforts into what I was good at: school. As early as kindergarten I was identified as an advanced student and teachers quickly highlighted my efforts as exemplary to the other students. I fed off the high praise. The better I performed academically, the greater the approval I received, the better I felt about myself, so as a naive child I determined my self-worth and academic performance were inherently linked. As long as I was successful in academics, I would be a successful person. For years, I believed that, putting school beyond all else.
Stress is one of our biggest enemies. It affects our health, our personality, and our relationships
First, confidence is necessary to do well in school. We need to be incisive with our education. University of Chicago said, “Raising cortisol either led to a performance boost or a performance flop.” Then we can build our confidence towards our work. We shouldn’t be fractious to our teachers and friends that can help us. We also should be adherent to the school rules. Beilock said,”If a student interprets their physiological response as a sign they are about to fail, they will. And, when taking a math test, students anxious about math are likely to do this. But the some physiological response can also be linked to success if a student’s outlook is positive.” Therefore, as long as we do things to keep our confidence up, stay focus and out of trouble we will excel.
I work hard to earn my good grades; they aren’t handed to me. Sometimes, their reactions bring me down. Most of the time I brush it off. I don’t want to boast and make them feel bad, but I’m also never ashamed of the grades I earn.
Throughout life, and as we get older, you will start to notice that people develop worries about various things more then they would at a younger age. For example using money for paying monthly bills, car expenses, and buying groceries is a common cataylst for stress for many adults. Sometimes, they don't even notice it, it may only affect them sub-counsiously. Some people may never notice this, and it may never affect them, however, I've never personally met someone who doesn't experience some form of this "stress". Stress is a bold concept, and can have a variety of meanings, but generally defines any emotion or feeling you don't want to experience. Stress is one of the many negative emotions that come with the positive aspects of life, meaning, even if you are satisfied with your current state, you can still have bad feelings. Stress is relatively easy to handle, as confusing
As human beings, we are susceptible to stress. Stress is in our everyday lives and it is something we can not hide from. We get stress from school, work, our significant others, and sometimes ourselves. The way we deal with stress is completely up to us and whether or not we want to deal with it. In the textbook “Psychology: From Inquiry to Understanding” by Scott Lilienfield, he talks about the five different ways that we can gain control over any situation.
According to our class notes, stress is “defined as the general state of the body, mind, and emotions when an environmental stressor has triggered the stress response”. However, Stress.org states that since there is not a definition of stress that everyone accepts, it is difficult to measure. (What Is Stress?)
Stress is something everyone goes through no matter what age, gender or race you are. Stress is the experience of a perceived threat to one’s mental, physical or spiritual well-being, resulting from a series of physiological responses and adaptations. When people think of stress they think it’s a bad thing which isn’t true, some stress is just your body’s reaction to certain situations. At times it may seem like stress is taking over your body leaving you physically, emotionally and mentally hurt but what you can do is learn how to manage your stress to have a healthier and happy lifestyle. Stress management is learning to deal with your stress and take charge. There are three types of stresses which are eustress, distress and neustress.
Stress is an ongoing dilemma that occurs in each and everyone’s life. It is a factor that is undoubtedly a part of daily living. Due to the trivial problems that occur in people’s daily lives massive amounts of stress can arise. People perceive and manage stress in many different ways. The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
Another way one can manage stress is through breathing control and meditation. Breathing control includes the “take ten deep breaths” attempt to managing stress. Breathing helps one to calm themselves, and to think more
Stress is not only affected in the work place and at home, it is also affected during sports. There is a ton of pressure in many high school sports especially individual sports. Stress is the body’s way of
At one time or another, most people experience stress. The term stress has been used to describe a variety of negative feelings and reactions that accompany threatening or challenging situations. However, not all stress reactions are negative. A certain amount of stress is actually necessary for survival. For example, birth is one of the most stressful experiences of life. The high level of hormones released during birth, which are also involved in the stress response, are believed to prepare the newborn infant for adaptation to the challenges of life outside the womb. These biological responses to stress make the newborn more alert promoting the bonding process and, by extension, the child's physical survival.
There are many ways to reduce or handle stress in your life. The easiest and one of the healthiest antidotes for stress is laughter. Just smiling helps because it releases blood flow to the brain and endorphins are released. (4.) This gives a sense of well being. Some other simple techniques are doing uninterrupted breathing. Another stressor is lack of sleep. Therefore break the stress-sleeplessness cycle. You can help relieve your sleep problem by developing a daily sleep routine and don’t drink alcohol or caffeine before bed. Another thing is to reserve your bedroom for sleeping and sex only. (4.) Writing down your feeling in a diary may help relieve emotional stress. (4.)
