Some of the qualities and skills we value in our community are Democracy, Social justice, equality, and Integrity. As a democratic country, we expect our decisions to be made after hearing all the voices and the will of the majority will be carried out. For example, when a group of people wants to start a fundraiser, they all need to vote and pick a fundraising idea that the majority of the group wants to raise money for.One of the important values in our community is Social Justice and Equality, meaning equal rights for all races, gender, class, citizenship, religion and more.As important as it is to show equality,it is not always applicable in all situations,"Equality is not always Justice" because providing help according to everyone's needs
Having Equality and Opportunity in your country is a great aspect to have. Being equal is important to a lot of people, being able to do the same as others is also important to them. Being equal is all about being equal in rights, opportunities, status, religion, class, etc. Also having the opportunity to do the same as everyone else, this fall in the same group of everybody being able to have the same rights as other
Equality is something Americans strive to provide and maintain. It has become an integral and necessary part of our mosaic culture. Even now to the point that when people think of America, they naturally think of freedom and equality. People of many different races, disabilities and creeds have come to the United States seeking the impartiality upon which this country was founded. The institutions of this country have relied upon it, just as it was the created by the events in the laying of moral foundations. The expression of America's citizens plays an extremely significant role in the history of equality in American society. In the pursuit of equality and the "American Dream," people have authored inspiring
Equality – Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everyone can participate and has the
The preliminary point into an inquiry of distributive justice is to disconnect the conjunction of “distributive,” and “justice”. For the purpose of this essay, I will inherit and accept John Rawls explanation of justice from A Theory of Justice. “Justice,” according to Rawls, “is the first virtue of social institutions.” Therefore, from a societal perspective, justice as the first virtue negates the utilitarian maxim that a loss of freedom for one would be acceptable if there was a greater good to be shared by others. In a truly just society, all people are treated fair. The questions of individual liberties are taken as settled. In the just society, liberty, rights, and fairness are not subject to a utilitarian calculation nor are they susceptible to political bargaining.
Equality – all individuals should be treated equally, morally, by law, and in their political voice.
or fairness within the social, political, and economic perspectives. Equity forms the core value of both
A general definition of social justice is hard to arrive at and even harder to implement. In essence, social justice is concerned with equal justice, not just in the courts, but in all aspects of society. This “concept demands that people have equal rights and opportunities; everyone, from the poorest person on the margins of society to the wealthiest deserves an even playing field” (http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-social-justice.htm). Sturman (1997) notes that theorising about social justice is reflected in recent debates about equity and equality, adding ‘the concept of “social justice” ... is not clearly defined (in fact, the term is often used as a synonym for “equal” opportunities or “equity”)’ (p.1). Thus, the notion of equity often replaces politically motivated conceptions of equality, and social justice reframed in this way is deemed as necessary for democratic life (Theophanous, 1994). This element of social justice involves recognition that there will always be some people in society who will need a lot of support and assistance, no matter how much education, training, encouragement or coercion is provided. There are people who have severe difficulties in understanding or communicating or organising their daily lives. This includes many people with a mental illness, other disabilities, literacy problems and other learning difficulties
To me this means treating everyone with respect and fairness whilst recognising their individual needs.
Social Justice Equally Distributed? Social justice is defined as’’... promoting a just society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity.’ It exists when all people share a common humanity so therefore they have the right to equitable treatment, support for their human rights, and a fair allocation of community resources. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
According to Robert Kohls, “Equality is, for Americans, one of their most cherished values.” In recent years this value has been vanishing from society. I disagree with Mr. Kohl’s ideas on the value of equality. I feel that in many social situations today people do not treat each other equally. In American society, equality is still one of our most revered values but in some ways we have created a new meaning of equality when it comes to other Americans or immigrants in our country, and the way their status is perceived.
At the heart of the communitarian understanding of social justice is the idea of reciprocity: each member of the community owes something to all the rest, and the community owes something to each of its members. Justice requires responsible individuals in a responsive community. Members of the community have a responsibility, to the greatest extent possible, to provide for themselves and their families: honorable work contributes to the commonwealth and to the community's ability to fulfill its essential tasks. Beyond self-support, individuals have a responsibility for the material and moral wellbeing of others. This does not mean heroic self- sacrifice; it means the constant self-awareness that no one of us is an island unaffected by the fate
The six core values are Service, Social Justice, Dignity of worth of the person, Importance of the Human Relationship, Integrity, and Competence. Service is helping someone with nothing to gain. For example a lawyer doing a pro bono case. Social justice is basically fair and just the relationship between the individual and society. Its a political concept that all people should have equal rights to wealth, health, well-being, justice and opportunity.
When considering ethics, equity, and social justice, many people would feel that these are individual concepts. However, each of these concepts requires the presence of the other to make sure that respect for the individual is achieved. In order for there to be equity among people, it requires a strong ethical background and the commitment to social justice in order for equity to be achieved. Likewise, social justice can only be attained if someone who is ethical fights for equality between all people. Then finally, ethical behavior will never develop without a strong belief that all are created equal and deserve recognition through social justice.
According to C. Smith, Social Struggle, they’re a couple of strategies that can help bring people together, three of them, which include starting where people are at, social justice values and increase ties among organizations. I believe that these three strategies have the best chances of bringing a small group of people from my community together. Deep Issues that truly matter to me that revolve around diversity and justice include decreasing prejudice against minorities and to end division between races. I truly believe that starting where people are located is one of the best ways to bring a small community together because it is important to listen and act on the issues people are experiencing. I would love to be part of a society where diversity is supported and races embrace their culture without judging one and another. Often times, we are too fixed on the faults of others that we forget to about key issues. Another part of this strategic is to truly value and appreciate with the members of your community and people outside. Often times there are tensions or prejudices against a minority group. Thus, it is important to genuinely work with people outside of you community or comfort zone with an open mind to connect and understand others. Social justice values is another valuable approach to bring community issues to light because it centers around principles that encourages people to live an ethical life. Although the concepts are meant to be secular it should also be
The first thing to consider is whether equality is desirable, and if so, what kinds of equality are desirable. For example, should young children have equal voting rights? The consensus
