Demographic Controversy

The Demographic Imperative is crucial for intercultural competence seen from the recent mistakes of an uneducated spokesman, Miley Cyrus. From her last racy performance to this year’s racist lingo and attire, Cyrus demonstrated a perfect example of the horrible ignorance to the demographics of an audience. Increasing in diversity, the demographics of the United States have changed dramatically over the past few decades; “The U.S. population is now more than 308 million, of which 62.3 percent are European American, 16.3 percent are Latino, 12.6 percent are African American, 4.8 percent are Asian American, and 1.1 percent are Native American. About 2.9 percent of people identify themselves as belonging to two or more cultural groups. (Intercultural

Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were some of the most daring artists of their time. Neel was especially known for her uncaring attitude of what was “in” at the time, while Egon Schiele was similarly known to paint some of the most bold nude figures of his time. Both painted what they wanted, not a thought towards what was socially acceptable. They both focused on painting people around them, or in Neel’s case, random people on the street, and Schiele was often compared to Picasso in his obsession with self-portraits. Either way, while Alice Neel and Egon Schiele were from opposite sides of the planet, they shared a remarkably similar style of painting and rendering of the subjects in those paintings.

Demography is the science of human populations and their change over time, and the United States Census reveals important demographic changes decade-by-decade that affect politics, government and public policy. One of the most important demographic trends is that the U.S. has become a far more multicultural and multilingual society than it was in 1960, due in part from changes in the immigration laws in 1965 that abolished the quota system of the National Origins Act that favored European immigrants. As a result, Asians and Hispanics have been the majority of new immigrants over the past forty years and states like California and Texas already have majority-minority populations or soon will have. At some point in the 21st Century, the U.S. as a whole is going to become a majority-minority society for the first time in its history. Another major demographic trend is the rapid growth of the over-65 population as the Baby Boom generation begins to retire, which will mean heavier expenditures on federal entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security. Elderly voters are also the most politically active group, especially when protecting these key safety net programs, and this has become a major political and public policy issue in recent years.

The female nude is one of the most prominent themes in the history of art and has been subject for many masterpieces such as botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Manet’s Le Dejeuner sur I’herbe. Storyville was a legalized red light district in New Orleans. Storyville was the answer to the ongoing crime problem in New Orleans back in the late eighteen to early nineteen hundreds. It might impact because more immigrant households are enrolling in early childhood programs. According to Edweek.org(2014) the enrollment has increased in certain regions to include the west and south regions. Latinos were one of the races that were in high attendance in those school districts. Changing demographics can impact the center due to teachers not adequately prepared to teach children from cultural and linguistic background. This impact would force centers to have teachers training programs to prepare teachers for a more diverse center. Eric.ed.gov(2014) discusses that teachers will need to modify or change their teaching practices to now fit a changing demographic to specifically meet the needs of their students.

Reclining nude female is a common subject matter in art history since the Venetian Renaissance, Titian’s Venus of Urbino painted in 1538 is one of the earliest reclining nude female in painting history. It described a beautiful young female laying on her bed with her sleeping dog, on the back ground is her maids looking for cloth or her in the cassone. Manet’s Olympia that painted in 1865 is a painting with a similar composition, A nude young female who was suggested a prostitute, behind her is her black female maid holding a big bouquet of flower which is possibly from her customer. On the same part of the composition, there is an animal as well, but this time it is a cat. Titian and Manet’s reclining nude female have a same composition and subject matter, however They are very different in art history, both stylistically and culturally.

The reading claims that nudes throughout artistic history have been an important source of beauty and controversy. Nudes began to spike during the Baroque period as they were used for the more expressive and emotional arts of the time. In the nineteenth century, nudes became more common, yet became more sensitive. Artists would train by drawing nudes of ancient Greek statues and figures from myth. However, many artists would then move on to create works depicting prostitutes or peasant naked women. This would not please patrons as they were extremely societally taboo. Jeanne Dunning is an artist that studied at Oberlin College in Ohio and has exhibited the majority of her art in Chicago. Dunning works primarily with photography and is heavily inspired by the Surrealism movement, shifting reality in the way she portrays human body parts to convey strong themes of sexuality and feminism through a bizarre sense of humor. Dunning has a long history of creating images revolving around female sexuality, including a series she named “Untitled Landscapes,” which consisted of extreme close-ups of human body parts, as well as a series of photographs incorporating close-ups of fruit that strongly resemble female genitalia. Dunning also draws upon classic art categories such as portraits, landscapes, and the nude, playing on the expectations of these categories to reveal sexual implications. Her unique use of sexually charged images that play with the expectations of her viewers allows Dunning’s art to “[fit] within Postmodern concepts of sexual politics.”

My first demographic variable is “Age”, which is classified as interval level of measurement. The descriptive statistics for age includes the mean which is 2.6093, (SD=.65814) and lastly, the range which is 5.00. Meanwhile, the second demographic variable is “Employment Status”, which is classified as a nominal level of measurement. The descriptive statistics for employment status includes the frequency which is 278 (91.4%) and the mode which is 1.00 for this demographic variable. The last demographic variable is “Ethnicity” and it is once again a nominal level of measurement. We use frequency and mode as out descriptive statistics for this variable. The frequency is 277 (91.1%), but there is no mode for the variable ethnicity. My independent variable asks about gender which is classified as a nominal level of measurement.

Artist and people viewing the art work have always had a fascination with the female nude. Even when I was a child my attention was captured by the nude art not because I was a kid and I saw a nude lady , but it forced me to wonder more about why the female nude was so amazing as a tool for art and why this is repeated so many times throughout the centuries. One female nude painting in particular was the subject of controversy and exposed the syncretism and or the power of the female nude painting.

“Nude on Black Screen” is composed out of oil on screen canvas. This is a beautiful image of a woman, dancing, embracing herself and her womanhood. This image is a very good example of modern day version of women’s liberation. Constructed in very intense white, which is extremely eye catching against the black of the projection screen. The lines are a somewhat thick line, running in a horizontal direction, running parallel to the line above and appear to have a curve or wave to them, as they flow to form a cylinder like, 3-D visual of the woman’s body. The viewer will notice that the image is fairly accurate in showing the curves of the woman herself; it shows roundness in the breast, abdomen, hips and rear. It also shows off other womanly features like hair, hands and soft facial features. Even though the viewer is unable to see the expression on the woman’s face, it is easy to feel and interpret the feeling behind this image. As the lines form this 3-D visual, they also form the texture of the image. The lines allow the viewer to feel as if they are able to reach out and touch a tangible image. The woman’s body is placed off to the right side of the projection screen, but a portion of her lower left leg, and her long, flowing arm is extended to help balance out the image. With the concepts that Stanley Helms used, makes this piece full of traditional art ideas.
