Substance Duality Theory
Substance dualism refers to the argument that the mind and the body are distinct and capable of existing independently. The argument was proposed by Rene Descartes making him one of the leading proponents of the dualism philosophy. Substance dualism infers that since the body and the mind have different properties, they exist independent of each other. In spite of the substance duality argument attracting support from different quarters, some of Descartes’ successors critiqued the argument citing weakness in the proposition. Primarily, this paper seeks to establish the substance duality argument as proposed by Descartes through detailed analysis of the duality subject. The theory fails to adequately address the interaction of the mind and body thus, exposing the theory to criticism from various scholars. However, the study reveals the mind-body interaction proposed by Descartes is probable. According to Descartes dualism theory, the mind and body are defined as substances. In this sense, substances are complex in nature and have the ability to relate to other elements (Descartes & Cottingham, 2013). The mind and the body are seen as intimately connected. Medical research has revealed the body and the mind communicate through signals. Similarly, the mind can affect the body causally as shown when the body responds to one’s set plans. The interaction between the mind and the body was demonstrated by a psychologist Joseph Breuer in the treatment of a woman who had numerous physical symptoms such as impaired vision and memory loss (Descartes & Cottingham, 2013). After a series of tests and background research of the patient’s life, it was found that she had a problem coping with her father’s demise. Consequently, she had withdrawn to solitude and repressed her feelings of grief. After the patient had begun speaking about her feelings, the physical symptoms she earlier had disappeared. The case successfully demonstrated and supported Descartes mind-body interaction
