The Most Beautiful Death
The short film, Descent is about a dying man and his very vivid memories shown through dance.
The movie won many awards including, the Van Gogh Award at the Amsterdam Film Festival and Best Music and Dance at the Global Short Film Award. The film also won the Excellence film award from Indie Fest.
The entire film is less than five minutes but it has so much content in it. I’m usually not the kind of person that watches live performances or goes to dance recitals. I have trouble understanding them and this film was no exception, but it was so beautiful to watch that I’m not upset that I wasn’t sure what was happening. I have a million different ideas of what the dancers could mean with their movements but I’m not sure

In front of the wall are three men with black trash bags over their faces. They are reaching out in different directions and ripping open the bag. They pull themselves up off the floor and begin their dance. It is beautiful and mesmerizing and I’ve watched it several times. There are moments when the camera goes into slow motion and we get a great scene of one of the three men with his leg straight up in the air. After their dance the camera switches focus back to the woman in a yellow dress from before. She moves as fluidly as water. Her movements are precise and relaxing. She is making things that take lots of strength look like anyone is capable of doing it. I could watch her dance for hours. Just as with the three men from before some of her movements are caught in slow motion, at just the perfect time to see her body contort in different ways. The film ends with the dying man and the woman in the yellow dress. He is still letting out his substance from his body while he dies in her arms.
Along with the very powerful visuals from the dancers the music is strong and reflective. If I close my eyes I can see the story laid out in front of me from the music alone. It has a haunting tone to it that makes you wonder about your own life and what your memories would look like if someone created
always been known for the risky and powerful movements which are often why dancers retire from the company. The dancer’s movements were often very intense and emotive, such as the “throws” across the stage in which the dancers would, almost violently, launch themselves across the stage in different forms (leaps, falls and flips to name a few). Another section where the movements were emotive is where the dancers were thrusting their hips in different positions to perhaps show sexuality in “self”.
In the second section it represents the women fighting for their freedom. The movements are a lot more circular in this section. It uses more contractions, releasing & vibratory movements. In the first two sections, the dancer shows the struggle being not only physical but emotional also. She does this by the powerful expressions she uses on her face. She even imitates a couple of screams that play in the song ‘Been On A Train’. This gives the audience a clear understanding of the how she is feeling.
I decided to choose a dance that we have watched in class. The video is called Slipped. Slip is a music video about two young people slowly slipping away from each other. As well as how to deal with pain as well as letting go of it. The choreography is not abstract as in moving for the sake of movement. With the Four areas of movement analysis, the major on within this dance is the effort, the girl in the video seems to be bound and free at a different time through of the routine. The body within this piece was focused on the relationship of the two, you could see that the two people were comfortable with each other but were not happy. The space of this was done at a subway station and was meant for video recording because of the rotation of
In the third section Ms. Donna Wood looks like an African goddess and her body has an unexpected gracefulness. Even stage color was bright reddish, warm atmosphere around the dancer, like a sunrise in the morning. Stage would fill with colors. Music and performer are singing together. A sound of music tempo gets faster. She has the happiest face ever, no pain and no slavery. She jumps, she swings her leg and arms, and even she pulls her dress up and shows her leg an entire dance. Sound and lightening create the environment and good mood. She uses high level of dance than in previous two sections. She moves in between melody. I liked how she uses
Some of the movements executed by the dancers are similar to those executed by dancers in a stepping performance and also in a tap dance presentation. This presentation falls into the group of the new trends of modern dance, in which the choreographer are taking more and more liberty with various dance combinations, and including strong messages in their work. I would definitely attend other dance performance, not only from this company, but also by other companies; and would also recommend this performance, especially to people going through a dark period in their life. This performance finished convincing me that dance is surely the most communicative of the art forms, and that a single presentation can convey more than one
The movements of the happy dancer are joyous and tells a story of how he accomplishes his dream. The sad dancer is mopping around for the first minute of the dance, until he catches onto the happy dancer and begins copying the joyous moves, then he has a solo part of him getting motivated and accomplishing his goals, then the two dances in harmony and happiness in the
The next piece was entitled “Satin and Tulle”. It began with a dancer in pointe ballerina shoes and a leotard coming out towards the audience and dropping pointe ballet shoes in front of us. The dancers were pulling what seemed to be the ribbons on a pointe ballet shoe out from backstage onto the stage. The ribbons were the focal point on this performance. The dancers then became tangled up in the ribbons, almost as if the dancers were lost within their passion of dance, and continued to dance in perfect unision. The dancers would place the ribbons around their necks, like the dancers wanted to harm themselves. With the music, I noticed that whenever the music became very loud and busy, the dancer would
She is telling to give you two points of views. Also the movements they used was a mixture of all dances i felt like she wasn't strictly modern even though that's what she danced majority of her life . This particular
Dance is one of the most beautiful, expressive forms of art known to mankind. It expresses joy, love, sorrow, anger, and the list truly goes on for all the possible emotions that it can convey. Dance not only can express how one feels, but it can tell a story or even be used to praise a higher power. Dance has intricately played an important role to every culture over the course of time. Two forms of dance that have not only stood against the test of time but have influenced the development of other various styles of dance is none other than Classical Ballet and Modern Dance.
I became a ballet student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2014. Being a high school student here gave me the opportunity to expand my horizons and take in as much art as I possibly could. During my first fall at UNCSA, I attended the Emerging Choreographers performance and was privileged to see works created by fourth year contemporary majors. These stunning works showed me the possibilities that dance holds to truly convey powerful and meaning messages. One work in particular stood out to me. It was a piece that showcased five dancers all dressed in pedestrian clothing. At first it appeared to be a casual street scene but a the music progressed one girl began making incredible sharp movements as if she was possessed. She made tiny movements of her hands and feet all the while moving a great distance across the stage. The others started going off what she was doing and all moved together as one giant body supporting the girl in the middle. She continued dancing in the most amazing way have many small movements combined with huge movements that made her seem a thousand feet tall. Intrigued I spoke to one of the dancers about the intention of the dance. She told me that the
When you start to watch the choreography, you can see the pain and the struggle. It was almost as a disbelief. At 4:58, you see both dancer in white gowns, with their back against the wall, they lean inwards and outwards, slowly sliding down in pain, and suddenly they tumble. One gets up, and runs around blindly, like she's looking for something. You can really feel something painful, something thats hard to comprehend. A pain that doesn't seem to have a way out. They are in a dark space, a caffe with tables and chairs tumbled over. This performance, can touch anyone, no matter of the way you see
The movements were very specific and showed the story of the dance. The partners used many movements that contained many body
They continue with dramatic moves as the song continues to play with the same eerie music. The nurse, who had always been with the girls, the whole time they had been there, over hundreds of years was finally being turned by the girls, their insanity had effected the nurse. In the last moments of the choreography, they all reached out for help, but curled back into a ball as all three of the characters sit in a line, moving back out as the end of the dance was near. They finished the dance with a final large movement. The song drifted off, leaving only the sounds of rain behind. All three girls held in the same position for the remains of the video. Blackness finished the video as it
I liked the dance piece because the dancers were limited physically in their bodies, but their dancing was beyond limited and astounding. At first, I was a bit doubtful and sceptical before watching the dance because I thought the dancers were going to perform with very minimal and stiff movements. But to my surprise, the dancers moved gracefully on stage. The two dancers used quite a lot of space. The dancers used all levels of space from low to high. For example, the dancers executed amazing leaps, jumps and lifts in their performance that represented as high levels of space. The dancers movements were grand; however, they were also whimsical, sharp, circular, and clean. The dancers utilized most parts of the stage. The pattern of the space that performers used was more curved than linear. There were two dancers in this piece, the male dancer that had only one leg and the female dancer that had only one arm. The genre of dance that was performed was a ballet; though, in my observations the dance seemed to be more contemporary than ballet. For instance, the tempo of the dance was slower and had less rhythm than most classical ballets I’ve observed. Also, there were a couple of pauses and rests during the performance. The dance
For centuries peoples have been dancing as an art form that allows them to physically express themselves without using words. These are times when simple dignity of movement can fulfill the function of a volume of words (Humphrey, 1937). A great deal can be understood when a person watches a person dances. The message that is related is strong and clear. When you understand the types of dance the message is clear. I will attempt to examine the different forms of dance. We will look at the forms of dance like Ballet, Modern World/Ritual, Folk, and jazz. Never the less it helps construct a better understanding of the different forms.
