1. Describe Thoreau’s idea of civil disobedience in your own words. To what extent do you agree or disagree with his philosophy? Would you consider yourself to be civilly disobedient and to what degree? a. Essentially, Thoreau’s excerpt is saying that you need to be able to prioritize your own morals over the dictation of the law. If the rules are questionable, look back on what you value to make your answer and stand up for what you think to be right. “A good citizen must sometimes break the law”- A good citizen must regularly follow the law when it is seen to be fit. But also, it is the citizen’s duty to fight the government on debatable laws, in order to fix the problem to create happiness again. Because it is a “good” citizen and not a great citizen is because the good citizen pushes back a little to keep the government in balance while the great citizen just follows loyally and does not think for himself. 3. How does Thoreau use rhetorical questions to convey his message? Give 3 examples and explain each. a. Is it not possible to take a step further towards recognizing and organizing the rights of man?
