1. Describe TWO cultural, social, or historical events that were going on in the world WHEN THE PLAY WAS WRITTEN (1916).
1. The biggest battle of World War I was fought on February 21, 1916. This was the Battle of Verdun, which was fought in France. This battle involved France and German army’s. World War I lasted from July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918. (https://www.theodysseyonline.com/america-1916-what-happening-100-years)
2. In the 1916s, women’s suffrage was a hot topic. Specifically, in August of 1916, the “winning plan” was revealed by NAWSA (National American Woman Suffrage Association) president Carrie Chapman Catt. This winning plan involved a campaign to try to get it through to congress. Also in 1916, Jeannette Rankin was elected
During the 1900s, many women were beginning to stand up for themselves and no longer wanted to be inferior to men. Prior to 1918, women were disrespected and under - valued in society. There was a change in attitudes towards women as the image of the "New Women" began to arise. They were becoming involved in various different jobs, having the ability to be better educated and get involved in politics. However, this view that the "New Women" was the only factor that contributed to women getting the vote is untrue. Women began their own campaigns in order to get the vote. This included
In the 1900’s, women began to fight the battle that would eventually be the win of a lifetime: the right to vote. The 19th amendment finally granted them their wishes. In 1920, women wanted the same rights and equality as men. Women during this time were treated as minorities because they were immigrants, or people of color, but all were unable to vote. These strong and encouraging women put together large groups and organizations to fight for what they wanted. They were fearless and ready for anything that came their way.
World War I took place in the year of 1914 till the year of 1919. The war went on for 4 years. What triggered the start of World War I was the assassination of Australia’s archduke, Francis Ferdinand. The Black Hand group did not want Archduke Francis to be ruler of their land. Francis’ assassin led Europe’s stability to collapse. Europe desired to build empires and form new alliances. The Allies were the victors. There is an estimation of 10 million military soldiers that died and 7 million civilian deaths. 21 million were wounded and nearly 8 million either went missing or were imprisoned.
13.How does this play , produced in 1916 show its age ? in what ways does this play seem remarkably new
World War I was the bloodiest and most brutal battle at its time, and without all the new weapons, it might not have been. World War I started in 1914 and ended in 1918. It was a war fought
World War I took place in Europe in the early 19th century and was fought by Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Great Britain, and Australia-Hungary. These countries reasons for a war were nationalism, alliances, and militarism. Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Great Britain, and Austria-Hungary were all wanting the same thing, but they were too busy competing with each other to see clearly.
The most vital time in this struggle was during the 1890-1920, in which the situation seemed bleak. The fight started slowly, but steadily it grew stronger towards the end of the century. With the help of great leaders, they were able to be influential on a state-to-state basis, working just as nominees did for being elected. Individual women, seeking to establish a role at the ground level, created marches, made banners, pins, and held rallies in support of their cause. Reluctantly, men and even states as a whole, who had initially favored suffrage for women started granting women the right to vote as the period inexorably moved toward the reforms of the Progressive Era.
In both the Ninetieth and Twentieth century, did women’s suffrage become a big deal. It all started, on November 1, 1873, when Susan B. Anthony entered a barbershop in Rochester, N.Y., insisting she had as much right to vote as any other man. After this incident, Susan B. Anthony became a primary activist for women’s suffrage. She affected women’s suffrage in many different ways. Anthony created organizations, demanded to change the United States Constitution, and not only helped women’s suffrage in the United State but around the world as well.
When the play was written and set (these may be different!) and a description of the cultural/social/political climate of these times and how is it reflected in your play
In 1915, Carrie Chapman Catt, a previous school teacher, moved towards becoming the leader of the National American Women’s Suffrage Association and built up a new technique to win the vote. She named her method of achieving this goal the “Winning plan”, her technique included the loss of numerous key U.S. senators and the identification of supporters prepared to campaign in each state legislative district in the country.
Until the 1920’s, women were not able to vote and did not serve in Congress, and were seen as too inferior to serve in the government or take part in. Women’s suffrage was a major issue. Women activists such as Mary Harris Jones, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Stanton worked with groups such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) to gain the right to vote. In 1920, their efforts worked and the 19th Amendment allowed women the right to vote, something only men were allowed to do. Also, as ideas changed of a woman’s ability to have jobs, in 1917 the first woman was elected into Congress.
In the early 1900s the US Army and US Navy Nurse Corps opened up various positions for women. As many as 13,000 women joined the Navy and Marine Corps right after the posting the these positions. (Wilson 2004) President Woodrow Wilson had both the suffrage movement and the war as the main issues that he focused most of his campaign on. In 1918, President Wilson gave a life changing speech promising that women will have the right to vote. (Daly 1988) 19th constitutional amendment states “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” (US 1787)
World War One was the first major war that was fought in mainly in Europe, and parts of Asia. The war lasted from July 28th, 1914 to November 11th, 1928. There were over a hundred nations involved not only from Europe, but from Asia, Africa, Central America, North America and many Island nations. There were millions of casualties fighting in slow moving trench warfare , and many battles were also fought at sea.
The play is set in 1912 just two years before the war. This was a very hard and difficult time for England a period when they were many strikes, food shortages and political tension. In contrast to this the play was written in 1945, which was after world war two when the country was in great disorder. Priestly deliberately set his play in 1912 because the date represented an era when all was very different from the time he was writing, rigid class and gender boundaries seemed to ensure that nothing would change. Yet by 1945 most of the class genders have been breached. Priestly wanted to make most of these changes through his play he encouraged people to seize the opportunity the end of the war had given them, to build a better and more caring society.
World War I was one of the worst wars to ever happen in history. The Great War lasted from 1914 to 1918 with up 37 million casualties. The war was fought between Russia, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, the U.S. and many others in Europe. The spark that led to the war is said to be the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in late June of 1914. But the assassination is not a direct cause at all. There are some causes that lead to World War I. A couple of the causes that led to one of the greatest wars to occur in history are alliances, imperialism, and nationalism.
