It goes without saying that everyone on earth has at least one sanctuary. For some, this place is high up in the branches of a tree, where they can touch the sky with outstretched fingertips and feign a lack of attachment to the busy world lying below. For others, this sacred place might be found in a place as close and accessible as a cubbyhole in their own home. For others still, it might be in a library, or on a quiet mountaintop, the hard pews of a church building, or even a person. I myself have found my haven to be far away and, for now, out of my reach, in a city called Wilmington in North Carolina. It is the seventh or eighth largest city in the state, but the downtown area isn’t too busy to relax and breathe in the fresh air drifting from the beach only a few miles away. It is peaceful and serene, but still bustling with just the right amount of life and activity to be always uplifting, and flawless in its own way.
My family used to visit there once a year for about a week in the summer. We would go camping and spend the majority of our time frequenting the beach. Back then I was tiny, but even now I know I would be overwhelmed by the vast space of the sky opened up over me, blue and deep in a reflection of the water below it. I would try with all my might to run through the grainy, hot sand scraping away at the bottoms of my burning feet onto cooler ground, where cool ocean water counteracted the sun’s hot touch. Even as a little girl, the beach wasn’t just a place
When I was a teenager, my family took a vacation on the east coast. I was fortunate enough to have cool parents that let the teenagers pick some places to visit. Since we were all fans of the Jersey Shore show and so close to New Jersey, all the teenagers begged to go to “The Shore”. I expected it to be a cool, hip place with the MTV stars all around. The Shore looks similar to other beach cities. It has a calm, relaxing feel to it. It has the beautiful, blue skies and ocean breezes. It has sunbathers, surfers, boogie boarders, and beachcombers. However, there is a fee to go on the beach in addition to the parking fee, which was a surprise for us, but it is “The Shore”. The beach is clean with white sand and blue water. Unlike California beaches, it is usually not crowded (probably because they charge people). There are places to rent snorkeling gear and boogie boards.
Women have struggled to identify themselves and claim what has belonged to them, because of their race, class, as well as, gender, that has limited them from all the opportunities men have received. While growing in a more recent generation, individuals believe that there is no longer a gender divide because women no longer are forced to stay in the home and cook and clean, while the men work. Women have resisted returning to the lifestyle of being a housewife, and now are working at higher positions, receiving an education, and at times even managing their own business, etc. Whereas Bell Hooks reflects in “A Place Where the Soul Can Rest”, her struggle to claim her own space as an African American woman from the American South; connecting
Every summer,my family has the tradition of going down to Wildwood Beach for a week . Wildwood is like home to me. There I have countless memories such as riding a huge 12 person bike, ordering zeppoles for breakfast and getting the icecream truck at midnight every year. The beach is where we all saw my baby cousin's first steps and where I went on walks during sunset with my papa before he passed. Every year we all count down the days to be down there, all together, to make even more memories. The beach represents me in so many ways . I love the feeling of the sand on my feet and the calmness I get being
In Puerto Rico, the weather was nice it was high 90’s. I was at the beach daily the water was cold like Alaska, but it felt good just because the weather was scorching hot. When I would exit the freezing water, the scorching sun would shine on me and it felt like heaven. It was a big pain trying to get the sand off my feet whenever I would leave the beach. it felt like the sand was glued to my feet, I had to
I am isolated from the others. The people of the main streets of Italy are very far from the island of Sicily in which I live. I live a basic lifestyle and live off the fat of the land as I tend my animals and eat my crops. I always lived my life afraid as if other people would judge me and point out my differences. This was who I was until the day that I decided enough was enough and I was going to venture into society and reveal myself. From my cave, I have seen boats travel to here occasionally and they have always left after some time. This was my way out I told myself. I knew the ships would lead to the mainland so I waited two days until the sound of the boat horn pierced my ears.
I live near an island. In the center of my street sits a small wooded sanctuary; a place where the troubles and grief of daily life can be shed allowing for a renewal. It is home to a plethora of flora and fauna.
As I sit here, on the hood of my car looking out into the vast field I think to myself, why this place? Out of all the places that mean so much to me, why does this place stand out the most? Everyone has that one spot that is special to him or her for various reasons whether it be a memory, experience, how it makes them feel, etc. For me, my favorite place encompasses all my senses bringing them to an all time high filling me with an overwhelming indescribable feeling. It’s my sanctuary, a safe place, but above all a place to clear my mind and getaway from reality. There aren’t enough captivating words to describe the beauty of this place. In the winter, the vast field covered in a blanket of untouched glimmering snow surrounded by bare
When the hour brings stillness, even in the midst of confusion, I think that allot of us, if not all, has a private sanctuary hidden within our conscious being. Nothing complex or difficult to reach just a state which we can readily retreat to and sort out our experiences of life. Perhaps for most it is an unnamed region that we find ourselves when deep in thought. It may be the product of meditation or contemplation or imagination or whatever four or five syllable words you may choose. But it is real. It may not be a tangible substance such as wood, stone or iron, but to our spirits it is an anchor to weight us to the realities of our life. It is, in spite of our hopes and dreams, our escape within us bearing a reality that can
I love where I live. A quiet little mountain town located in the heart of the Mahoosucs, filled with individuals that simply love the outdoors. I think it is important to love where you live, so you can enjoy each day to it’s fullest. There are very few places that I’ve seen that has made me feel the way I feel about Bethel. During my college search, I was very determined to find a place that made me feel at home. Then I found Saint Michael's, and therefore Burlington. I was ecstatic to find Saint Michael’s was located in my eyes, the perfect distance from the vibrant town of Burlington. By finding Saint Michael's I found a place full of similar people to that I find in Bethel, yet there are about fifty times more of them. A short drive from
A Mandala is a circular design that is seen throughout many cultures around the world. It is a symbolic piece of art used for enlightenment, protection, healing, or something else depending on the culture. They are often made for meditation as well, and even deconstructed at the end. The Mandala I created expresses who I am. It spans from my hobbies and favorite places to my ethnicity. This Mandala has helped me to understand who I am, and how I’ve changed and grown throughout these 14 years.
Hindu and Buddhist cultures are both rich in religion and expressing their faith through art. The Buddhist culture was formed by Buddha who went out to discover the causes of pain and suffering. Once Buddha realized what the cause was, he provided a set of four guiding principles know as the “Four Noble Truths” that are exercised in Buddhism (Kleiner, p. 13). The Four Noble truths are “Life is suffering, the cause of suffering is desire, one can overcome and extinguish desire, the way to conquer desire and end suffering is to follow Buddha’s Eightfold Path…” (p. 13). These truths are expressed in the following of Buddhism and commonly carried out through art. Buddhism is practiced throughout Southeast Asia and southern India where
Buddhism is religion that is based off of peace and spirituality taught by the teachings of Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gotama. Many who follow its teachings believe Buddhism to be more of a way of life or lifestyle choice rather a religion. Buddha is not a god, but one man that taught his followers a path of enlightenment from his experiences and values. Buddha’s main teachings were the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths were teachings about suffering, pain, disease, happiness, loneliness, and aging. It explained why we as humans can overcome certain obstacles in our lives by looking at the more spiritual side of things such as “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own

Its cold, windy, and sunny all at the same time. The beach stretches for miles seeming endless, until it reaches a tall cliff with waves crashing against it. The sun shines down on the moisture in the air creating a “sparkling” affect to add to the view. In some spots on the coast giant rock formations stick out of the water, creating a question on how they formed there. Sea creatures dot the sand everywhere. Walking the beach with sand between your toes is and not a worry in your mind is one of the best feelings. If you time it right early in the mornings and late in the night low tide takes place and you can find sand dollars and unique shells. Beautiful houses and hotels line the beach all with the same withered look they all strive to have, and balconies on every place to capture the view.
