It was my final high school game at Chino Hills with my best friend Lonzo Ball. It was the State Championship against Mater Dei. College scouts were scattered over the whole stadium! I want to impress the UCLA scout because Lonzo had committed there and i want to play basketball with my best friend. If i could get scholarship to UCLA it would be amazing. “Chardee this your time to shine let’s get out there and do what we do best.” Lonzo told me. “You’re right, you better make me look good out there with all of the NCAA scouts watching all of us.” I said jokingly to him. Tip off neared and then Lonzo, I, and the rest of the team got on the court to play Mater Dei. It started off close but i catched fire and i was splashing all of my three pointers. At the end of the first quarter i had 17 points. I had five three pointers and one monster dunk over Bol Bol (Bol bol is a 7’1 high schooler). The game was going really well for me and i hoped i could get some more points to impress the scouts. “Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. The player to watch in this game is Chardee Macdennis, he is on fire, 29 points in the first half, Chardee is 7-9 for behind the arch. The college scouts are watching him for sure” In the locker room, everyone was giving props to me for doing so good. Suddenly coach Joey came up to me. “Chardee i heard a UCLA scouts talking, they said if you do good in the 2nd half they are going to offer you a scholarship!” “Thank you for the heads up, ill my hardest in the 2nd half” i responded The team then proceeded out of the locker room for the 2nd half.
The game had started up again and i was playing good. We were destroying them 68-39. I had 36 points at that point. Towards the end of the game i saw the UCLA scouts walking down to the court. At the end of the game Mater dei got embarrassed and we beat them 102-61. I had 51 points at the end of the game. That game was the best i have ever played compared to my other career high i had in any other games. A man with a UCLA hat came up to me.
“Hey chardee, that performance was one of the best i have ever seen, the UCLA bruins see a lot of potential in you and hope that you will accept a scholarship that we are going to offer you.¨
We walked together to the field, the spikes on the bottom of my cleats clicking with each step on the parking lot pavement. A huge field with onlookers filling the bleachers on the far side came into view, lit up by the soft evening light. I spotted the girls on my team and my tired looking grey-haired coach. Me and my dad split up, me going to warm up with my team and my dad going to sit with the team parents. As I was passing with my teammates I watched the opposing team carefully. I observed how neat their drills were and how accurate their shots and passes were. They all looked so athletic and that really made me doubt myself. How was I supposed to prove to everyone that I was a good player if I had to play against a team this good? What if I mess up and the other team completely destroys my team? The loud buzzer that ended the warm ups sounded and both teams went to their side of the field. My coach called today’s starters out, and luckily he didn’t choose me. Relieved, I went to go sit on one of the hard metal chairs they provided for the teams on the sidelines. The chairs were uncomfortable but that didn’t bother me. I had other things on my mind. I sat shivering watching the events of the game
I had left to my room to think about what he had told me and I just remembered how while still in middle school I was talking about being a football player all 4 years and try to get scouted by college senior year. I went back to his room and told him my decision which was to continue on with playing football. I'm glad I made that decision because I had fun during the season blowing out other schools, there were losses along the way but it didn’t matter because memories were made out of one little decision which was get up and continue hitting practice or stand down you’re not cut out for this.
On the last day of tryouts, the coaches made cuts for the teams. They called each one of us separately to meet. The head coach started off by saying that I was a good player and that I had a lot of potential. Then, the praise quickly dropped off.
"This is the big stage,'' Hield said. "It's win or go home. It's my senior year. NCAA tournament. Everybody is watching. You don't get these moments very often, so you go out there, you've got to bring it."
In November of 2014, my team and I made it past the first round of the LHSAA Division AAAA playoffs after defatting the number twenty-eight seed, Belle Chase High School. After finishing a very good regular season with a record of 10-2, we went into the playoffs surprising everyone as the number four seed. After the winning the first round in style, we found ourselves matched up with defending state champs from the season before. On this defending state champ team, they possessed some of the top defensive backs in the state of Louisiana. In this nail biter of game, my team and I would face adversity, nervousness, and discipline. We got on the rented charter bus, and began our trip down to the heart of New Orleans to play the East Jefferson Warriors in what would be a very exciting high school football game full of hard hits and upsets.
“It’s something that I love being a part of and whenever I get the chance I’ll put my hand up. I’m more than ready and proud play for my country.”
“If we are shooting the ball well, we can beat anybody. The playoffs are fun and the kids are excited.”
“ You are lucky you got a scholorship cause if you didn’t you be playing in the hood trying to make a few bucks.”
"He's obviously the MVP of his conference, the OVC. So he's a really good player."
"At the end of the day, we're going to have homecourt advantage regardless. Our biggest focus is just getting everything we need to get together, especially defensive-wise as a team."
“Coach K, from Kentucky just called. He said that you are going to be a star one day, and offered you a full scholarship to their school!”
It was the first day of tryouts in ninth grade and I was nervous out of my mind. I walked in the freshly lit gymnasium, with maroon bleachers and the roaring black panther mascot in the dead center of the court. The first game of tryouts and I stepped onto the court knowing that I should display my talent for scoring, passing, and defending. I made sure that talked on defense “Down Low, Cutter, I got two, One D, Baby J” and I made sure I said it enough where the coach heard me from the sidelines.
“We have seen you shoot around and now know how good you play. But we see you are slipping and sliding in you shoes so…”
“I would like to the tryout info for the football team, sir.” I looking at him making it clear I wasn’t messing around.
"There is now way your kicking me off the team before the game," I said calling his bluff.
