Salvation Mountain
Hidden deep into the Sonoran desert, sits one of America’s most beautiful and innovative pieces of art named Salvation Mountain. Salvation Mountain is a colossal piece of work created by Leonard Knight. It is located in Slab City; a place located well into the Sonoran desert of California. The city itself has gained much popularity throughout the world considering it is the only place in the US that is completely lawless and has a immense lack of government. Salvation Mountain is a national treasure that is original like no other. Salvations Mountain’s location is partly what makes the artwork so interesting. Located within the California Badlands and 156 miles east of San Diego is a small town named Slab City. Slab city, also nicknamed “The Slabs”, is an abandoned navy base that was used by the US navy in preparation for World War II. It was a training ground for marine soldiers named “Camp Dunlap”. By 1956, most of its buildings were destroyed and the site was rarely used. It has since been abandoned by the US navy. Slab City is currently used as a snowbird community, meaning most residents only live there temporarily. Most stay throughout the winter months and once it gets hotter they depart because of the sweltering weather. The climate can reach up to 120 degrees fahrenheit in the summertime. What differentiates this city from many others is that it is the only city in the United States that is
On the day of September 11, 1857, an emigrant party camped at Mountain Meadows was brutally killed by the Mormon militia aided by Indians. This essay examines two viewpoints regarding the massacre found in Sally Denton’s “American Massacre” and in “Massacre at Mountain Meadows” by Ronald W. Walker, Richard E. Turley, and Glen M. Turley.
Further from your home and closer to theirs. Elevated more than 3000 feet above sea level. The Appalachian Mountain range serves as a beacon for wildlife. Black bears, white-tailed deer, opossums, and a wide variety of rodents roam the range freely. Once standing atop a mountain you may scan in all directions as you may see many trees pulling against one another in an endless game of tug of war. The whip of the crisp breeze of hickory intertwined with oak trees would remind anyone fall is coming.
A small town in Kentucky nestled along the Appalachian mountains, long forgotten by the outside world. The town people only have each other to rely on and will take anything to forget where they are and how horrible their conditions are. In the video, Hidden America Children Of The Mountain, the main point was to bring awareness to the situation that the people who live in the Appalachian Mountains are being faced with. A half million people are living in poverty in the mountains. Even the football star of the town lives in his truck because of his family’s poverty. When Americans hear about poverty, they think of it as far away and as something that will not affect them, they do not think about it being in their own back yard. In reality,
For years, the State of Nevada has found the Yucca Mountain project unacceptable because of the obvious logical and scientific issues that make the site itself unsafe. Additional support for their argument is that other than being far from the nuclear waste, the repository cannot really separate itself and its dangers from the environment and humans. Even though Nevada started with just being upset about the state having the political finger pointed at them to hold the whole nation’s nuclear waste but now their argument is stronger (Adams, 2010). Not only is Yucca Mountains’ size not big enough for the entire countries nuclear waste, but geologic factors could make the waste
In the beginning of East of Eden, Steinbeck can be found giving a detailed description of the two separate mountain ranges that form the Salinas Valley. The eastern mountain range with it’s wide range of magnificent flowers is said by Steinbeck to be lovely, inviting and full of positive energy. These wonderful mountains are known as the Gabilan Mountains. The range of western mountains is nothing like the mountains of the east; The western mountain range is described a dark, dangerous and unfriendly place. This brooding range is called the Santa Lucas Mountains (Steinbeck, 2002, p.1) These mountains are a symbolic representation of the contrast between good and evil in
The first Region is the Blue Ridge Mountains this region is located in the North Eastern part of Georgia. This region is home to The Blue Ridge Mountains, which is the southernmost point in The Appalachian Mountain Chain. It is home to Georgia’s highest point, Brasstown bald at 4,784 feet above Sea Level. The First American Gold Rush took place here in 1828.
On this day in 1863, Union troops capture Lookout Mountain southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee,as they begin to break the Confederate siege of the city. In the “battle above the clouds,” the Yankees scaled the slopes of the mountain on the periphery of the Chattanooga lines.
The Mountain meadows massacre was a series of attacks on the Baker-Fancher emigrant wagon train, at Mountain meadows in southern utah. The attacks began on september 7 and culminated on September 11, 1857, resulting in the mass slaughter of the emigrant party by members of the Utah Territorial Militia from the Iron County district, together with some paiute native americans. The militia, officially called the Nauvoo, was composed of southern Utah's mormon settlers (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Intending to leave no witnesses and thus prevent reprisals, the perpetrators killed all the adults and older children-about 120 men, women, and children in total. Seventeen children, all younger than seven were spared.
Round one of this season's Rutherford County Championship goes to R-S Central (4-3, 1-3), who got past Chase 26-7 last Friday. It was Central's rushing game led by Tyrese Tate that led them to four touchdowns on the ground and well over 250 yards in that category. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers defense allowed just over 30 yards rushing on the night. Chase (2-6, 0-5) was their own worst enemy with penalties and just not executing when in dire need of doing so.
Mount St. Helen is a very active volcano classified as a stratovolcano, stratovolcano is basically a tall volcano built up of layer after layer of hard lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash. Activism, culture and value have always had a tremendous influence in society. When it comes to the Appalachian region of the United States, people tend to see our culture and values differently. The individuals of the Appalachian region have been stereotyped for far too long, people forget that West Virginia has played a huge role in building this country. Our coal miners have put their lives in danger time and time again, some losing them, for worker’s rights. The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor rebellion in the history of the United States. This was the foundation of the movement for eight hour work days and minimum wages. The novel Storming Heaven by Denise Giardina is a fictionalized tale of the conflict that took place in these coal fields of West Virginia. The novel brings to light the stereotypes, race and religion of the Appalachian people.

The ruckus from the bottom of the truck is unbearable, because of the noise and excessive shaking. As we slowly climbed the mountain road to reach our lovely cabin, it seemed almost impossible to reach the top, but every time we reached it safely. The rocks and deep potholes shook the truck and the people in it, like a paint mixer. Every window in the truck was rolled down so we could have some leverage to hold on and not loose our grip we needed so greatly. The fresh clean mountain air entered the truck; it smelt as if we were lost: nowhere close to home. It was a feeling of relief to get away from all the problems at home. The road was deeply covered with huge pines and baby aspen trees. Closely examining the
I looked up at the morning sky painted in hues of purple and pink. The crisp air tickled at my nose. I stood in front of the open passenger door of the truck while waiting for Jacob to give me further instructions. I found Jacob on one of those mountain-climbing adventure websites. He had the highest rating of all the Mountaineers featured.
When the sun slowly peeps over the range of mountains, birds shake the morning dew off their feathers and give a cheerful song that would lift even the most sorrowful of spirits. A light fog wraps around the mountain range, reaching to touch every bit of life thriving there. The slight chill in the air is enough to give a gentle shiver, but not enough for the need of a jacket. A breeze tickles the trees, making their leaves shake and sway with laughter. Sunlight seeps in past the thick canopy of branches with hopes of being able to reach the damp mountain earth. The mountains are the best place to live to be relaxed, see the most beauty, and never get bored.
