Although Shakespeare’s Othello is considered by some to be a commentary on race, Shakespeare is truly addressing the dangers of blind trust as well as the overwhelming power jealousy can have over even the most respectable mind; he addresses these themes by evolving the characters’ personalities and using dramatic irony to intensify and contrast the characters’ relationships with each other from the beginning to the end of this tragic drama.

The backdrop of the tragedy centers around the cities of Venice and Cyprus when the Venetians are at war with the Turks. However Desdemona goes and passively takes blame and only Emilia follows her ideology and fights back against the men. While both characters have their own distinct personalities, their choices boil mostly down their contrary senses of loyalty and justice. In Shakespeare’s Othello, although Emilia and Desdemona are both characterized as loyal and judicious, through their differing statuses, opinions of men, and trust in their husbands, Shakespeare shows Emilia to be more honorable.

Throughout the course of the play, it is evident that some characters saw Othello as good while others saw him as evil. In the first act, senator Brabantio tells Othello, “O thou foul thief, where hast thou stow’d my daughter?” (1.3). Others, such as Iago, see Othello has a fair and righteous person, a person representing the good side of the coin. Iago tells Othello, “My lord, you know I love you” (3.3).

This wouldn’t be possible though without the help of the incredibly deceitful Iago, who at all costs wants to ruin Othello and take his job as general. Othello isn’t the only target though, for Cassio, the young right hand man of Othello, will also taste the trickery that is Iago. Iago is a man with a plan, but at what cost does he go to get his way. Iago went too far from his original plan for revenge, and that is why he will be caught in the end.

Shakespeare portrays Othello as the general without faults, perfect. Yet, he slowly reveals the weaknesses of Othello’s love for Desdemona. For this love he will forsake anything. Iago is quick to pick on this and starts working towards destroying Othello through his only shortcoming.
