Typography employs the technique of arranging type in a visually appealing way to make a document legible and to provoke interest. Inadequate use of typography may leave a reader struggling and disgruntled which is why it is important to know the basics of creating an appealing document. Through the utilization of good typography, people will feel encouraged to read a document rather than feel unmotivated. The reason that typography matters is that a reader is a writer’s most valuable asset and the writer does not want to lose a reader due to an unappealing layout. The use of certain typographical devices such as typeface, font size, scaling, emphasis, leading, and kerning, foreshadows the type of reader that the document will attract which is left completely in the hands of the writer. Often, when deciding what typeface will be utilized within a document, there are numerous decisions that must be factored in. The decision to use a particular typeface should be based on the rhetorical situation, which means before settling on a typeface the designer must consider their audience, the purpose of the document, and the context in which a reader will be using the document (Kostelnick & Roberts 5). The designer must also keep in mind that “the more outlandish the typeface, the harder it is to read” (Ogilvy 96). The typeface that is chosen to be used within the design must suit the document in order to attract and communicate the message properly with the intended audience.
“Focuses on the aesthetic aspects of the text (e.g., plot, character development, setting, length and complexity of sentences, word choice, word order, figures of speech, and illustrations)” (Botelho & Rudman, 2009, pg. 25).

Font type has no significant effect on eye movement (fixation, saccade, regression).

This paper discusses the use of stylistic features in passing the message to the readers, with
The least effective text is “Handwriting Matters; Cursive Doesn’t” by Kate Gladstone. In the text the method of appeal that is used most effectively in the text is logos. Kate Gladstone used logos the most throughout the passage and she didn’t use ethos and pathos as much. The three methods of appeal weren’t balanced throughout the passage which made her text less effective. A piece of evidence that demonstrates this is found towards the middle of the passage, “Adults increasingly abandon cursive. In 2012, handwriting teachers were surveyed at a conference hosted by Zaner-Bloser, a publisher of cursive textbooks. Only 37 percent wrote in cursive; another 8 percent printed. The majority, 55 percent, wrote a hybrid; some elements resembling print-writing,
Typography is a tool for creating an emphasis on a page through readability. It can direct the reader where certain things are on a page that; acting like a map. Every reader is subconsciously
Font size and color is important when tailoring a document towards a reader. If the reader is older and hard of sight then the use of bigger font will help out the reader so that they can read it clearly. Also the use of color for certain words will make the reader remember those words more readily than others.
Throughout time, there have been countless artists, designers and typographers that had the opportunity to make a bold statement, invent the next best thing or to engrave their name in the design industry for all eternity. Although ordinary people don’t realize a good design when they see it, they know it has attracted them somehow and they feel the need to ask and wonder how it came to be. Without question, Eric Gill has note ably revolutionized the type world. Without him there would be no benchmark for humanist typefaces; without Gill, there would be no Gill Sans, the font that will consistently be seen as a crisp, clean and readable font; as all typefaces should be. Despite for his one notorious face, he has created 11 typefaces, wrote
The original design was released by Linotype in 1957. Since its launch, the typeface had been worked on by a variety of designers to adapt it for successive methods of composition, from hot metal to photocomposition to digital. Given the technical limitations of methods, the character weights, widths and spacing were inconsistent and compromised.
The elements of design were created by Arthur Wesley Dow to help people see, describe, and create visual qualities in a systematic way. It consists of 7 elements: line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space.
The typeface I chose for this research is Times New Roman. I like this typeface out of all the other. It was released through Monotype in 1931. The design was based off Plantin , but with a renewed focus on legibility and economy to better meet the needs of newspaper typography. Times New Roman is one of the most ubiquitous typefaces of the digital publishing age due to it being the default font for numerous word processing applications and web browsers. In Times New Roman's name, Roman is a reference to the regular style of a conventional serif font. Times New Roman was a metal type created in the late sixteenth century by the French artisan Robert Granjon
The technology of writing and printing are so ingrained in our society and everyday practices, that their importance often goes overlooked and underappreciated. It is beyond doubt that both inventions influenced society on a micro and macro level, through bringing standardization to society, as well as bettering literacy rates. In order to understand the deep rooted effects that writing and print has had, it is necessary to examine the technology’s life span. Though prior, an understanding of orality is vital, for all media and technology builds off of one another. By means of understanding orality, one will gain insight into the technology of writing, and thus become adept to comprehend the invention of print.
In order to make an impression over the reader, in other words to make a paper readable following some points should be noted:
The world population is aging. Today over 20 percent of the population is over 55 and that percentage is growing rapidly. With enlarged fonts that the browsers support, the middle-distance computer screen becomes much easier and less stressful to read. The Web page must be designed for accessibility for those enlarged fonts to work correctly.
