Designer Babies Research Paper

Good Essays

Ever feel terrified of what the future of genetics is? Perhaps designer babies? But, maybe no one has stated the wonderful possibilities it has and its outcomes. This has made the scientific technologies in genetics help us as us humans. Our civilization has become majorly advanced just by using genetics; and it isn’t as harmful as it sounds. We can save babies and have them personalized to how we would want them to be. Our society would be so much sophisticated. Using genetics to create designer babies is a tremendous decision to make, so the human race can advance.

Foremost, the rich can get designer babies way easier than the lower classes are able to have, but at least we can have numerous experiments. For example, in the article, …show more content…

For instance, in an article, “In Praise of Designer Babies”, it says, “...we'll start treating awful diseases, but then quickly move to less critical medical needs, and on to purely elective procedures.” This shows that, comparable to surgery, we at first treated the necessary situations, but then now we can also have plastic surgery. That type of surgery is to look increasingly desirable or for pure enjoyment. The same concept is going to happen to genetically modifying our babies. We will treat the disease, then we will just start adding parts that aren’t necessary. Another instance is, in the same text, it says, “But my point is that when we say, ‘We sure don't want designer babies’...it's worth asking whether our instinctive reaction actually has a rational basis.” This shows that, we might end up using genetics and it will turn people against each other. Just by modifying of food to have GMOs, people argue and think it’s not mother nature’s way to harvest and make food. We don’t want to make a bunch of babies that look the same and have the same characteristics because it won’t do us any help. We are just changing the child without actually thinking, “Well, there is already a bunch of blond haired, blue eyed, athletic, towering, children everywhere. I’m going to just take out his disease and that’s it,” Yes, it is exceptional that children are …show more content…

All we need to do it change one letter in the genetic code. For example, in the article, “In Praise of Designer Babies”, it states, “‘It would be against nature to treat your child's illness.’ So why is it obvious that we should treat the illness after the child is born, but not prevent the illness beforehand?” It would be silly of us if we did not treat our children if we knew they had a fatal illness. It is superior to help them while they are in the mother, and not watch them suffer as they grow. We might even be able to save countless of kids everywhere, by just changing one adenine, a nitrogen base, even adding or taking away a code. For example, when a child is born with down syndrome will have an extra chromosome or a chromosome with an extra part. We can get into the DNA and delete that extra chromosome to help heal the child. Another instance is, in the same article, text, it says, “Imagine you knew that you carried a gene for a debilitating illness. But, doctors could go into your egg (or your spouse's) and remove that gene…” Just imagine all of the healthy kids that will be able to enjoy their life relating to normal children and being able to do normal activities. Kids can be ecstatic everyday and their overall health all over the world might even improve by so much just by using genetics. Another example is, from the article, “Will Gene Editing Allow Us to Rid the World of Diseases”, it
