One of the most interesting advancements in the biomedical sector has been the invention of designer babies. Designer babies refer to a wide range of reproductive techniques such as replacing versions of genes linked to certain diseases and enhancing certain attributes in a baby. These adjustments, however, are not ethically right since God’s work is termed to be perfect.

The term designer babies come from the procedure of embryos being selected and using genetic screening to make sure inherited diseases from their parents aren’t passed down to their offspring. But today this power is becoming abused. Some people are selecting the embryos and want to use this to pick what their child will look like and taking out certain genes to ensure their dream child. They are able to create certain traits such as athleticism or intelligence also in the embryo. Genetic screening should only be used on an embryo so ensure that is will have a healthy future and a long life. It should not be used to pick out your perfect child.

The possibility of making a designer baby could be happening soon. It is no longer an issue of whether it will happen; the question is when will it happen. Today researchers are making fast advances in information on the human genome and how to change and adjust genes. Designer babies allow society to customize offspring that hold certain, desirable traits through the process of genetic engineering during in vitro fertilization. Although scientists have possibly found a way to genetically modify the genes of a human embryo, it has become clear to me that I disagree with the process of engineering a child as people will use it only for appearances, be misused that’ll lead to a form of abortion, and create a gap within society.

Designer genes are genes created or modified by genetic engineering. These genes can have a number of different uses. They can be used for producing things for research or medical treatment, or be used to give a baby better genes for strong development. Some religious and moralist groups argue that these designer genes are a bad thing because they will result in a world with humans whose genes have been altered and carefully selected for only the best traits. While this is true, it also allows for us as a society to get rid of problems like impaired seeing or hearing, and it allows us to screen infants for any potential fatal genetic diseases. Even though designer genes do raise ethical concerns, they are ultimately a good thing for society because they allow for us to have an opportunity to eradicate dangerous inheritable diseases.

Imagine you and your significant other walking into a doctor’s office, and choosing through a books of various traits, physical and non-physical for your new baby to have. These traits would be examples such as hair color, eye color, height of your child, muscles or no muscles, intelligent or average IQ, disease free, etc. Daily technology advancements in the field of genetics make it possible for parents to select characteristics like these. How far will we advance technology just to help humans design babies? The debates rages between the moral and ethical limits, how safe the new technology is, and the required limits on what to allow enhancements upon.
