It was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who famously said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”. There was a deep-seated irrational fear in Lake County, Florida in 1949 four black boys accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. White supremacists obsessed over controlling the black race, and protecting the “flower of southern womanhood”. While blacks feared for their lives. And with the influential but extremely courageous help of the NAACP, especially Thurgood Marshall, some fought back. Gilbert Kings Novel, The Devil in the Grove, tells the story of a rather suspenseful tragic time for our Nation that should never be forgotten or repeated. A time when irrational
I chose “The Devil and Tom Walker” for my fictional story. (The plot is below.) The story begins by showing you the background of the story, and describing how miserly Mr. and Mrs. Walker are. Then it shows Tom talking to “Old Scratch” (The Devil), who then offers Tom all the treasure of Capt. Kidd, for a few conditions. Tom goes home to think about the offer, where his wife tells him to take the offer. After many fights on the subject she goes to make the bargain herself, the devil tells her to return the next night. She goes but doesn’t come back, a day after she goes missing, Tom goes looking for her where he finds her apron with a heart and liver in it. Tom makes the deal with devil next time the meet, conditions and all, one of the conditions is, he has to use the money to start a brokers shop. Years go by, Tom fearing the bargain he made with the devil will catch up with him, tries to be a Christian, he carries a Bible everywhere he goes. However, while arguing with one of his client’s, Tom says in his wrath: “Devil take me if I have made a Farthing.” Next comes three loud knocks on the door where Tom sees the devil again and is taken away by the devil. Lastly, all of Tom’s wealth and assets disappear forever. Such is the plot for “The Devil and Tom Walker.”
In 666 Death RD Bloody Mary BLVD 7631, there is a horrifying, supernatural, dried out house, your bones will have a frigid feeling going into the pores with just looking at the ancient, moldy, and dusty house. The exterior walls has been scratched off, with what seems to look like fingernails. You can see the cherry red blood, as if it was there for eons. The walls are made out of solid rock stones. They have the color of cherry red blood, and the Dark green color of molded algae. Around the perimeter, there are a couple of fallen chipped trees that will not only grab the victim, but they devour on their crunchy bones. In the front of the supernatural house, there is a female ghost, guarding the house from any disturbances, such as dark spirits.
Washington Irving is an American writer in the era of Romanticism who mainly focused on dark romantics. One of his popular works, The Devil and Tom Walker, written in 1824, is a short story based on the legend of Tom Walker , the main character, who exchanged their soul to the devil for Pirate Kidd’s treasure. Irving depicts the main character as a miserly and greedy person who cares for nothing more, but himself, the tone of the story is dark and gloomy, which portrays the daunting and bone-chilling imagery of the story.
It takes me a moment to gather my heart and fix my composure before I even notice the interior-every single wall is painted a bright color. Greens, reds, oranges, yellows, no wall is safe. I almost laugh, a major contrast from the cry I choked down at the doorway, and much like this place is from the chameleon job it has on the outside. The all-black desk stands out, the main piece of furniture in the rainbow-like room, as my mom makes her way to it to check in.
One day, Tom finds the remaining parts of an old Indian fortress and, subsequent to kicking a skull, experiences the Devil, who offers Tom covered fortune, apparently in return for his spirit.

There comes a car in the drive-thru, and it pulls right up to the window, and as I hear chatter among the customer and Larissa. Larissa comes towards the front of the counter and says “I can’t argue with this guy, we don’t have student discounts and tells Jason to go and talk to the customer.” Jason does not hesitant and goes to the window, where I hear him saying, “sir, we do not have student discounts”, and this seems to calm the man down. Larissa makes the drinks and serves the guy his donuts that he ordered to and throws his straw wrapper at Larissa and drives off. When Mark Twain moved to a mining town in Colorado, he said the town was wide open with brothels and bars on every corner and that it was no place for a Christian so he had decided not to be one. Others have responded in much the manner as Mr. Twain. When they realize the difficulty involved in being a Christian, they either quit trying or compromise their convictions.
Never again. That phrase is often heard in regards to the Holocaust, the mass genocide of Jews. It means that never again will there be another tragedy like that, where millions of people lost their lives simply because they were born in the wrong race. Never again will there be so-called “ethnic cleansing” anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, this promise was not kept. Genocide is still happening today. The Darfur region of Sudan has been experiencing the murder of black Africans tribes by the Arab militia, the Janjaweed, who feel they are a lesser race. The Devil Came on Horseback is a film that documents this genocide. It tells of the gruesome murders, rapes, and lootings that African villages fell victim to. It also talks about
The style that The Devil’s Highway is written mirrors the language of fictional adventure novels more than encyclopedias. Urrea creates a mythical fantasy setting, writing, “Dawn came gradually to the Sonoran Desert. With the light, the heat started to fill the land. The promise of fire awakened alien noises all around them (115).” His descriptions of the land are poetic and beautiful; even when describing the extreme heat he uses descriptive language, saying “The next few nights would stall at ninety-four or ninety-five, and the days would explode into triple digits (116).” The language in this book is so colorful that the places and people described seem The risk of writing a nonfiction story as if it is a fantasy creation is that readers
The door closes as the doctor walks in the cold, silent, weary room.“Mrs.Hagman, the results are back”,said doctor Ahmed. While Mrs.Hagman had a horrifying look on her face. “We did a blood test and it came back positive…. Jaxon has Aml Leukemia and he is already in its first stages, we have to act faster than we expected”. “You did say that you visited Australia in the past 21 days right”,asked doctor Ahmed? “Ummm yes, we did Jaxon wanted to go to Dreamworld, he didn't get to attend because we had to come back to hear this gruesome news”, exclaimed Mrs. Hagman. “What does that have to do with anything”,asked Mrs. Hagman? Just questions we must ask in case of disease.” “Well, on the bright side he automatically gets a “wish”,the
Though abandoned, the house was still appealing. It never looked like a haunted house, yet it turns out it was. The once worn out furniture has since been replaced with brand new chairs showing a more modern style. My mom saw the wallpaper and fell in love. She always said it was a cute yet mysterious work of art that pulled the house together. Now I know that the wallpaper was mysterious. Day in and day out, my family worked on our new house until it was in “tip top” shape (as my mom always said). Never once did we have any suspicion of having evil birds trapped in our wall. Not until the fiftieth anniversary of their master’s death for their curse had been
If there was one thing that has grasped my attention as much as it caused me nightmares, it was haunted houses. Not the type of haunted houses that pop up around Halloween and frighten you with organized jump scares. I mean real haunted houses with a backstory. The kind where someone ended up being murdered on the property and the person’s spirit lingers years later. That’s what I am on the search for. My interest started after I had accidently watched My Paranormal Encounter while channel surfing at the age of 10. Ever since that day I’ve been doing research on paranormal activity: attempting to discover a way to conquer my fear. It’s been a decade since I first began and myself, along with a few friends, have been preparing for almost a year to further my research by visiting a real haunted house. Convincing myself that I was ready for this was more difficult than convincing the others involved. Even now as I sit in the back of some beat up van I feel like we should go back. I shifted my attention from the view of cornfields outside the window to the front where Tony and Cheryl sat jamming out to some song by Guns n’ Roses with the windows down. They started waving their hands around like fools, attempting to keep everyone lively since we had been on the empty road for several hours without stopping much. Behind me, Kurt opened the mini cooler, which sat upon miscellaneous crumbs that had always coated the colorless carpet, and snickered.
