In an Author’s Note, an anonymous author figure explains that he traveled from his home in Canada to India because he was feeling restless. There, while sipping coffee in a café in the town of Pondicherry, he met an elderly man named Francis Adirubasamy who offered to tell him a story fantastic enough to give him faith in God. This story is that of Pi Patel. The author then shifts into the story itself, but not before telling his reader that the account will come across more naturally if he tells it in Pi’s own voice.

In the book Life of Pi the author Yann Martel wrote about a young boy named Pi Patel surviving on a lifeboat by himself. Throughout the entire book Pi was very close to religion and in the end his religions were the main reason he had survived. At the start of the book Yann Martel introduces three religions, Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. There are three main points that aided in Pi’s survival. One being that Pi was open to religions and started to follow the Islamic faith. The second reason is that Islam believed that one should pray five times a day, and Pi did exactly this. In the Life of Pi he must learn to rediscover himself because of the tragic accident that has happen to his family. Pi must learn to be able to get over the loss of his loved ones and quickly reconnect with himself in order to help him survive. Pi must turn himself around and remember to focus on the things that matter most, trying to survive. Pi rediscovers himself in Richard Parker because he uses the companion of the tiger to help keep himself calm. Pi has left his comfort zone of being under the care of his parents and must now discover his own values and beliefs in order to navigate and survive his life in the sea.

The novel is organized into three part each containing chapters. There are a total of 319 pages, which adds up to 100 chapters. The exposition began in Toronto, Canada with middle aged Pi and who have a wife, Meena and his two children, Nikhil, his son and Usha, his daughter. Then, the story goes into Pi’s younger year with his mother and father, Gita and Santosh, along with his brother Ravi. The conflict is that they are leaving to Canada because of political troubles. The first complications is that children will make fun of Pi’s name then his father teach him and his brother the danger pose by wild animals. Another complication is that he is a believer for three different religions. Pi’s parents found out and demanded to choose a single religion, but they gave in and got him his rug. Pi describes his meeting with two Mr. Kumars; one is an atheist biology teacher and the Muslim baker. Pi’s father sold the zoo animal in preparation for the movement to Canada. Pi had a confrontation with the priest, pandit, and imam about him practicing different faiths, and then he explains why he does it. The climax is when the ship sunk, leaving Pi an orphan. In the book, Life of Pi, Pi suffers the loss of his father and brother in the sinking of the Tsimtsum, and surviving the majority of 227 days. During his time on the lifeboat, Pi created the better story to dissociate from the trauma he experienced, the immediate loss of his mother, and the effects of solitude on his mind. It is difficult to talk about the Life of Pi text without making a reference to faith, and the same goes with explaining Pi’s survival. Pi’s belief in pluralism and acceptance of the three religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam aid his future and is a crucial part of his survival at sea. His faith in knowing “so long as god is with me, I will not die” gives him the mental strength and will power to survive his ordeal. “Survival is the ability to swim in strange water” (Frank Herbert). Pi demonstrated life on the Pacific as a test of all aspects. Life on the Pacific tested his physical endurance, he was lost for two-hundred and seventy seven days. In that time, Pi demonstrates his faith towards God, himself, and Richard Parker. Pi develops a robust bond with Richard Parker, then connecting spiritually. Survival in the novel Life of Pi is etched in the deepest parts of the story. These aspects of the novel are depicted through personal and self-reflection within himself. Pi survives because of his strength, faith and a close relationship with Richard Parker.

The evident motif of religion plays a major factor in Pi’s life; however the author chooses not to focus on one religion specifically but instead enforces a glorification of more religions. Martel creates a main character who is a curious young boy who decides to learn about Christianity, Hinduism and Islam all at once. Even though Pi is primarily
