Diego Santos is a bright young man, aged 22, who is an international student attending Red River college. He is currently enrolled in the college's Business IT program. This is Diego's first time to Winnipeg and first time ever in Canada. I had the pleasure of getting to know Diego even better as we both joined the Red River College men's soccer team. It didn't take us long to be very good friends. Diego comes from Ribeirão Preto, Northeastern region of the state of São Paulo in Brazil. Our Season began in late August and ended at the end of October, as our men's team went to the championship held at Providence University, just 20 minutes away from Steinbach. The team finished in second place winning the silver medal. A part from soccer and school, Diego and I also spent time on the weekends as I showed him the many evening and late-night activities people in Winnipeg our age do during the weekends. This included many visits to various pubs and nightclubs located in the downtown, Osborne and Corydon area. The genre bachata was developed in the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic. This genre was created based on boleros (slow-tempo Latin music), son cubanos, waltzes, Mexican music and merengue. Bachata is well known as love and depressing songs in which many people describe them self with this genre. At one point back in the earlier 1960s, bachata was considered vulgar and low-class. “Acceptance of the music has increased significantly in the last two decades, although some dominicans, both individuals living on the island and stateside, still do not accept the music because of the implication of its lower-class origins and associations with such themes as crime, poverty, drinking, and prostitution’’(Stavans 47). The genre Bachata has spread and grown so quickly for the past few years that is has become very famous in the United States, Europe, China, and South America. The genre bachata is well known to attract people with its lyrics, instruments, and dance since it identifies many people with real life events.
Brazil as a whole, contains a wide variety of distinguishing factors that contribute to its rich culture and that makes it unique, savory and incredibly interesting to learn about. From Carnival to different religious beliefs to soccer and all kinds of different music, Brazil stands out of the crowd for being original. Alex Morgan was drawn immediately to soccer at a very young age. Alex was born on July 2, 1989 in San Dimas, California. She grew up with parents who supported her in different ways. Alex Morgan’s mother is Pamela S. Morgan, her father is Michael T. Morgan, and her two older sisters are Jeni and Jeri. At the age of ten I was the most energetic, go-lucky, confident girl. I excelled at my beloved sport, soccer. I had been playing since I was just a mere five years old, far longer than the other girls. Playing so long had helped me be at a higher level of skill than most of the other players on my team.

Latino’s haven’t always had it easy in America, some were luckier than others. Hector Garcia growing up was one of the lucky ones. His parents were educators but their credentials were denied. They resorted to teaching their kids inside the home. The Garcia kids were pushed by their parents to become doctors, so they could have a better future. Hector Garcia graduated from the University of Texas and did his residency in Omaha, Nebraska. Garcia volunteered as a infantry officer during world war two, but was denied to practice medicine while in the army. On Friday, the 6th of January 2017, Esteban Santiago began shooting a 9mm hand gun in a baggage claim at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, killing five people and injuring six others. Esteban Santiago is a 26 year old male who was discharged from the Alaska Army National Guard for unsatisfactory performance. In an interview with his aunt, Maria Ruiz Rivera, she said, "His mind was not right…He seemed normal at times, but other times he seemed lost. He changed." She added, "He talked about all the destruction and the killing of children. He had visions all the time…Who would have imagined that he could do something like this?" she said. "I don't say that because we're family. I say it because he wasn't like that."

It was a perfect day. I woke up. I was young. I didn’t care about life. I had one thing I cared about, and it was Soccer. My summer that year had been dreadful to anybody else's standards, but to me it was perfect. I would go out every day around Five Pm and go to a local Soccer field, and just forget how much my life sucks. This certain day, however, was distinct.
