Maggie and Dee Heritage
In “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, two sisters named Maggie and Dee are described through the eyes of their mother. Although Maggie and Dee were raised together, they are different in the way they think about their heritage. In this story the mother describes the differences between Maggie and Dee. When a disagreement comes up about some antique quilts, the sisters’ differences about how they want to preserve their heritage becomes clear. Maggie doesn’t like to show off, and she doesn’t want to put up her heritage for show. While Dee wants to show off and put up her heritage for show.
Maggie and Dee are different in most every way. In the way they walk and talk. Dee was a popular kid and had friends. She cared about her appearance and was big into colors. She liked dresses and wanted the most popular things. She got to go to school as well. She had no flaws. Maggie was not popular and had no friends. She thinks she is ugly because of the burn scars from the house fire. She cares about her appearance, but she looks at herself differently than her sister. Dee has an outgoing personality and is not shy. Dee was spoiled and thought nothing of what her life was like. She doesn’t accept that her family is poor. The house fire did nothing to Dee. It’s like she didn’t care about the house. Maggie wants to put her heritage to use. She has a keep to herself type of personality and is shy. One thing that changed her personality was the house fire. It caused her to look at herself differently. She is self conscious of her burn scars. She doesn’t want people to judge her, so she keeps to herself. She lost everything that was important to her. She had to restart. This makes her shy. Maggie does accept the way she lives and that her family is
