Conflict is an unfortunate part of life and it is truly inevitable, however in the field of nursing it can be detrimental. “Conflict is defined as the discord that results when two or more parties have opposing or incompatible ideas, beliefs, or goals.” (Schub & Schub, 2015). Within healthcare settings there are an outstanding number of differences in opinions that could potentially lead to conflict throughout a number of different levels of the employees. Focusing in on one of those areas would be the nurse to nurse, or horizontal/lateral violence.

In today’s organizations conflict and power are important elements to the success of any company but can also create negative long term impacts if not addressed. Organizations require enough power within the leaders to get through conflict and enough conflict within individuals to create new innovations. Not all conflict is bad but when there is conflict individuals with power must assist in aligning conflict resolution to assist in understanding for everyone involved in the conflict. The need for successful conflict resolution is vital for employees so that they are capable of moving on and understanding why the conflict was overcome.

When poor patient care is provided, the integrity of the nurse, the nursing profession, and healthcare as a whole is endangered (McKibben, 2017). As a result, conflict management is the process of recognizing and dealing with conflict in a realistic, fair, and competent fashion. Productive communication, problem solving, and discussing with a focus on the issues are required skills needed for conflict management (Saeed, Almas, Anis-ul-Haq, & Niazi, 2014).

There are two different types of conflicts that could happen in a work place which would be functional and dysfunctional. A functional conflicts is a healthy, constructive disagreement between a groups or individual. A dysfunctional conflict is an unhealthy disagreement that occurs among an individual or groups of employees. Yes, our unit also has charge nurses. At one time, we did have a set RN on each shift, that just did the charge nurse role, but now we rotate the position. It has its pros and cons with the rotation. Having different RNs take charge, gives everyone a chance to experience and demonstrate their leadership. The downside to rotating is, everyone has different ideas, skills and ways of handling situations. I guess there are more ways to handle being a charge nurse, as long as patients needs are being met safely and patients are happy. As for the nurses, its not always possible to make everyone happy, but for the most part, that goal is met. In my opinion that nurses must understand that their leadership is as important to providing quality care and know when delegation duties to nurse assistants to deliver care to patients in safe and effective manner. As a charge nurses, must learn the manager role, ability to be risk taker and how to uses their nursing experience. They must lead in improving work processes on the front lines, working with others, and following facility protocol. I am getting a little nervous and anxious how to prepare for this challenge just think about start taking care of patients all on my own. Every day as something new as a new nurse must deal with, this means thing are a lot different than what we have been taught in school this will be a big challenge.
