The pair that I have chosen is Agelina E. Grimké and Sojourner Truth. These two women are strong for standing up for what they believe in. Even though they came from different backgrounds of life, they fought for the same equal rights and freedom.
There are several similarities and differences between Grimké and Truth. Starting from the younger years, Agelina E. Grimké, a white woman, was born and raised in family that owned slaves in Charleston, South Carolina. Opposite of her, Sojourner Truth, a black woman, was born a slave in Ulster County, which is in Upstate New York. While both women are different ends of the spectrum, they wanted the same for every person, this included, equal rights and freedom for every man, woman, and slave. It is said that Grimké’s work in antislavery helped her advocate women’s rights as well. “The investigation of the rights of the slave has led me to a better understanding of my own” (Grimké 771). Truth, “had a visionary experience that left her convinced God wanted her to speak the truth about the evils of Americans’ sins against blacks and women” (Truth 775). Both women have given speeches to audiences of both men and women about antislavery and women’s rights.
Grimké had seven main arguments that she wanted to convince other women that slavery was wrong and that slavery needed to be gone. “First, that slavery is contrary to the declaration of our independence. Second, that it is contrary to the first charter of human rights given to Adam,
Mary Rowlandson and Sojourner Truth were both prominent women who had stories about their captivities. Mary Rowlandson was a White woman who was kidnapped by Native Americans during a raid on her village. While Sojourner Truth was born into slavery and remained property until 1826. The title of this book comes from the inspiring words spoken by Sojourner Truth at the 1851, nine years prior to the Civil War at a Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. In Deborah Grays White, Ar’n’t I a woman her aim was to enrich the knowledge of antebellum black women and culture to show an unwritten side of history of the American black woman. Being an African- American and being a woman, these are the two principle struggles thrown at the black woman during and after slavery in the United States. When I mention the names Sarah Grimke and Frederick Douglass what comes to mind? Abolitionists? Equal rights activists? Of course, these two individuals are making great strives to fight for what they believe in. The sad thing about it is that we don't have enough people with the likes of these two. England abolished slavery in 1834 so how long will we go on with this inhumane cruelty toward people. Our country is in a state of denial and if we don't wake up soon, we will all pay the price. I'm going to discuss a little bit about these two abolitionist speakers, than compare and contrast their roles of rhetoric, morality, ideas, and backgrounds.
During the late seventeenth century if a person was not a land owning single white male, they were treated horrible. This left women and slaves to be at the bottom of the totem pole. Now imagine being a woman born into slavery, this would put the woman even lower on the pole; close to being equal with dirt. Sarah and Angelina Grimke were the first Southern women to become influential abolitionist, which spoke on the end of slavery; as well as social and political equality for freedmen and women as well. The Grimke sisters stretched the boundary of women’s public role, by giving speeches to audiences with men and women, and by speaking in front of a state legislature about African American rights. Sarah and Angelina broke many of the social and political boundaries subjected on women.

Angelina Weld Grimké was born in Boston, Massachusetts February 27, 1880 to Archibald Henry Grimké and Sarah E. Stanley. As a result, Grimké was born into a rather “unusual and distinguished biracial family” (Zvonkin, para. 1). Her father was the son of a slave and her master, who also happened to be the brother of the two famous abolitionist Grimké sisters: Angelina and Sarah. Grimké’s mother, Sarah, was from a prominent, white middle class family; she left Grimké and her African American husband due to racial pressure from her white family and, as a result, Grimké was raised entirely by her father.

Throughout history, and even today, people have fought for what is just and right through a multitude of different methods, some violent, others entirely peaceful. There are three freedom fighters that stand out among the rest, however. Harriet Tubman risked her life many times to free her people from unjust enslavement, Mother Jones organized more obvious methods to set laws in place against child labor, and nowadays Christine Caine and the A21 Organization fight to save and protect victims of human trafficking. These three people have all fought valiantly, and continue to fight today, for the justice that every oppressed individual deserves, as they believe in equality for all on Earth.
In “An Appeal to the Women of the Nominally Free States”, Angelina Grimke immediately addresses all women as her “Beloved Sisters”, white or black. She establishes her audience right away and attempts to connect them through the powerful use of the sisterhood mentality. She begins to remind all women of their important duties in the world and then questions why women are stripped of political rights and duties solely because they are women, even though they are a crucial part of society. She goes on to explain slavery as a brutish crime “by which man is robbed of his inalienable right to liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, the diadem of glory, and honor, with which he was crowned, and that sceptre of dominion which was placed in his hand when he was ushered upon the theater of creation.” (Grimke). Grimke uses this vivid explanation of slavery to connect the oppression of African-Americans to the oppression of women and how women cannot forget that it is their duty to help their fellow oppressed citizens, regardless of their skin color.
