Differences Between Puritans And Native Americans

The Puritans and the Native Americans did not understand each other causing conflicts and wars to occur. During the initial interaction between the Puritans and the Natives was a struggle because of cultural differences. Three of these struggles that triggered the conflicts were religion, world-views, and ethics. The vicious battles offer vital importance for the history of the United States of America. These English settlers were a group of Christian separatist from the Church of England in search of freedom to exercise their own religion, Puritanism. In the 1600’s the separatist group of Pilgrims were sent first to the Netherlands then to Plymouth. (Perkins 58). When the English settlers first landed on the shores of New England the Native Americans had already occupied the land with their own succeeding societies. The natives had managed to maintain their culture and lifestyle, without the technology that the European Settlers had, for thousands of years. The Puritans believed there was only one god. The Native Americans believed in and worshipped a “Great Spirit”. They also worshipped living and once living things such as trees and their ancestors. Anne Bradstreet wrote “Then higher on the glistering sun I gazed, Whose beams was shaded by the leafy tree; The more I looked the more I grew amazed, And softly said, “What glory’s like to thee?” Soul of this world, this universe’s eye, No wonder some made thee a deity; Had I not better known, alas, the same had I.” She could see the beauty in the trees but knew better than to worship them as a god. The Puritans held the bible as literal and heavenly command; they saw the Native American’s worship in direct violation of the first commandment. “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3) This caused the Puritans to see the Native Americans staggering in
