Roughly 12,000 abortions are third-term abortions, meaning they occur after 21 weeks of gestation. The most common procedure for third term abortions is called a dilation and evacuation surgery. During this procedure, an abortion specialist terminates the fetus with a shot through the mother's stomach and into the baby’s brain. Later, after three days have passed, physicians remove the fetus in pieces. According to these facts, the termination of a baby after 20 weeks is not only inhumane and cruel, but puts the mother at severe risk of infection, and therefore, should not be allowed in the United States of America.

How does a child enter this world? Well, answers can vary. Most of the time, the child is born into a loving home that has anticipated his or her arrival for months. Other times, a child may be born into a loosely structured family that has no idea how to raise it. People cringe when they hear of a child being abused or neglected, but they never ask themselves how all of that suffering could have been avoided. There are two different types of in-clinical abortions. A suction abortion is used for a pregnancy anywhere between ten and 16 weeks. It uses suction to empty the uterus. Dilation and evacuation is used for a pregnancy anytime after 16 weeks and involves suction, and medical tools to empty a woman’s uterus (Planned Parenthood). Abortion results in terminating an unwanted pregnancy and should be illegal worldwide.

An Aspiration is a surgical abortion usually performed within the first month gestation. This 10-15-minute procedure involves the suction of the uterus to remove the fetus and placenta. Recovery time can take as long as a few hours after the procedure. Dilation and Evacuation is a surgical abortion performed beyond the 16-week gestation period. This involves a synthetic dilator the day before, as well as using a shot to guarantee fetal death. After this, removal of the tissue away from the lining will begin. Suctioning completes the process to ensure all contents are completely removed. This procedure usually last between 15-30 minutes. Both Aspiration as well as Dilation and Evacuation procedures can come with the risk of side effects including cramping, nausea, bleeding, sweating and infection.

After 20 weeks of gestation, abortions can be performed by labor induction, prostaglandin labor induction, saline infusion, hysterectomy, or dilatation and extraction.
