DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP WITHIN THE BUSINESS REALM Over a lifetime, things change, and the world adapts to a new way of thinking. In the world of 2014, the world has been revolutionized by the digital realm. All day long men and women of all ages are constantly interconnected through the worldwide web. With that in mind, the digital world has become even more prevalent in today’s society as there is evidence nearly everywhere in sight. Look one way and see a man checking his Facebook page keeping in touch with his old college friends. Look another way and see a 10 year carrying a $500 4 inch iPhone texting his other friends and posting a status on twitter for his whole class to see. Look yet another way, and find a jumbo-tron playing a video of a man committing a crime just a mere ten minutes ago for millions of people to see to hopefully catch the man. The whole world has taken on this culture of interconnectivity. With a new digital culture, comes a changing of rights and responsibilities. According to Isman and Gungoren (2014), today’s citizens who want to be successful require “extensive skills, knowledge, Internet and technology access and schools must guide the students to be a digital citizens.” Every person on this planet now uses the Internet and with each movement they make on the web, leaves a specific digital footprint. Every single step you take anywhere digitally, can be seen down the line by anyone who wants to see. This is where the idea of digital
The Information Age, also known as the Digital/Tech Revolution is the third major revolution in the history of human civilization. This period in history is filled with modern technology that has advanced humanity in some form through a new-found ease in information sharing. Whether it’s through computers, cell phones, cable, digital photography, or another form of technology this season of time is continuing to have a major impact on the way individuals share with one another. The different aspects that make up this current period of time are quite extensive. From what influenced the creation of this revolution to what has been affected by the Information Age are all important in understanding what the Digital/Tech Revolution is.
Through the power of today's advanced technology, the use of digital communication has changed the way society communicates with each other. Although digital communication is widely used all around the world it brings some positive and negative implications to physical communication. On average more than 2 million kiwis use facebook every day. Seventy-nine percent of those people use Facebook to stay connected to friends and family (Firstdigital 2015) Digital communication allows people and business to stay connected to the internet, but the use of too much digital communication can have harsh consequences to a person's relationship
As times change and humans progress ahead with new innovative ideas to enrich the quality of human life, often the main essentials to basic human life are forgotten. The introduction of smartphones leads to a crisp experience for the user to have an on-the-go computer. Social networks like Twitter and Facebook, and short and simple games, now replace those once bored moments. Consumers are more focused towards the extra luxurious qualities than the sole purpose of connecting those of longer distances. The main selling points for these products no longer include safety, emergency use, and security, but instead how one will be more connected to the outside world. With these new creations of technology, the concept of what technology may do wrong to society gets overlooked (Johnson.)
The use of technology has catalyzed society into an era that is increasingly interconnected yet impersonal at the same time. Despite technology’s endless list of assets, many fail to acknowledge its shortcomings when mentioning what is lost as a result of using it. Although in “Great to Watch” by Maggie Nelson, she is not afraid to share her skepticism of technology, as well as the role it plays in desensitizing individuals on a day-to-day basis. The internet is an invaluable resource to many because it is a public domain for sharing ideas, opinions, and knowledge that any and everyone can have access to. In a sense, it does not restrict what someone may see or do, and this can either be a good thing or a bad thing. The booming use of new media
Technology has easily become one of the worlds most used and popular inventions. Especially in this time and for the young adults of today’s world. We use it in basically every aspect of our lives. At work, at home, at school, and probably most of all in our social lives technology is always around. There are websites for everything, cell phones that can DO anything, and other pieces of technology that aid us through our lives. Everywhere we turn there is technology. It’s hard to escape it. Items such as television 's, computers, cell phones, even the microwave and that electric tooth brush you use is technology. Even though technology has its many positive influences in everyday life, it also has its bad influences. One of the most controversial topics when it comes to the topic of technology is the invasion of our privacy. How can something that is supposed to make our lives so much easier, actually make it so much harder? With the levels of technology, we have today, along with the internet and all of which the internet consumes, our privacy is basically non-existent. In the novel, The Circle, written by Dave Eggers, it is evident that with the uprising of technology, it is nearly impossible to have privacy and it affects our daily lives. It is not often that you come across someone who doesn’t have a cell phone of computer and it apart of some type of social media program where they interact with people. While social media is not the only aspect of technology that
Chatfield (2015) expressed that, “We began to weave constant availability into our conception of public and private space; into our body language and everyday etiquette (“I’ll get there for midday and give you a ring”)” (para.8); such statement made me agree with the author. We are constantly using devices to be up to date with the latest happenings anywhere, anytime, in which persons have become emotionally attached to their devices. It is important to be aware of current events and so it makes it convenient to always be connected. Also, another point made by the author was that, “…digital technologies mean my relationships with others and the world are extended and amplified beyond anything even my grandparents knew” (Chatfield, 2015, para.14). Although digital technology was invented for a faster and more efficient ways to communicate, it has made our lives less physically connected with others due to the lack of physical interaction. In the past, our grandparents had the pleasure of having verbal communication through physical connections, in which they were able to pick up on social cues, for example: facial features, gestures, body language and proximity; however, at present communication takes place with the connection of the internet with little to no social cues (Stewart, 2013). Digital technology is currently and
With the introduction of the Internet, there has been a global shift in our human culture. A profound, intense change in which every one of us has been impacted by, and one that has never been so pervasive or immediate as the one we have seen grow with each passing day. Now, the Internet was conceived with the purest of notions, where the intentions were good and the purpose was true: a glorified, all-encompassing systematic collection of the world’s expressions, where ideas, thoughts, reforms, and opinions can circle the globe, for conversations to be sparked and a global culture to be established. However, through the passage of time, certain facets of the Internet have become polluted, perverse even, where the malicious and ill willed could
In today's society the web and social media could be found being used by hundreds of thousands worldwide. This being 2015 compared to the years past, people have made a tremendous change when boarding down in digital mobile devices. Communicating not just verbally, but virtually. Using digital mobile devices to connect with social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn, google+, Myspace, Pinterest, etc. People have surpassed the old fashioned ways of communicating, back when digital mobile wasn’t so updated or advanced. Now that mobile has made a huge progress and people have adapted to this change so swiftly, it’s become their everyday routine in life. Either it’s getting up and checking your messages or chatting via mobile while on the go. There’s always going to be that piece of

In the video Amber Case: We are all cyborgs now, we can see that technology has moved from being a physical use, to being an extension of our mental self. The growth factor for technology has been astronomical. In chapter one of Technology Matters, Nye shows that Technology will continue to take on new meanings as we move from decade to decade. We are moving into an era in which our society is developing a second self as we become more active with the use of social connections on the internet. We have an interaction with others through this digital self, leaving a history that can be seen by many others. We can make connections with others just from a simple click of a button. This immediate interaction is becoming an addiction that brings about a change in how society interacts with others. There still is a human connection, however, it is done in a different manner from what we used to do. A global connection is available for anyone that has the technology that allows that connectivity. As this technology opens the flood gates for all of us to connect, it also opens up the vulnerability to exposure of personal and private information to be viewed by cyber-criminals. Here is where the political aspects of how this wide expanse of use needs to
Example: Sending an email is a form of digital access, many people use digital access to research information online. I chose this one because not everybody has access to digital but don’t not denied digital access.
The film “ Digital Nation” is an exploration of diverse people's views on digital media, in today's world. Some of the most important topics were on the virtual world, and the pros and cons of technology within different groups like gamers, students, families, teachers, administrators, children, military and businesses, as well as the experience of general people. In the movie, Prof. Sherry Turkle said, “Technology challenges us to assert our human values. Technology is not good or bad, is powerful, and it is complicated which means first we have to figure out what they are”. Currently, technology has taken over, wherever one, goes one will find it. Over the past years, social media in particular have spread worldwide; from Facebook to Instagram. There is constantly something new, extra advanced and creative. Overall, the technology has evolved the way humans interact with each other. In particular, technology influences by motivating students towards learning, saving time, building literacy and communication skills.
Throughout this essay I will be discussing how the digital age has transformed society in many ways. The digital age also known as the information age, is the evolution of technology in daily life and social organizations have led to the fact that the modernization of information and communication processes has become the driving force of social evolution.” This is a time period in which we live in now where Internet and email are available; this is an example of the digital age. The Information Age is the idea that access to and the control of information is the defining characteristic of this current era in human civilization.
Digital communication through today’s technology is empowering our society and strengthening human relationships through connecting us in ways that are impossible through organic human to human interaction. This exceptionally innovative technology was once only imaginable in science fiction literature, and is now a reality for most of humanity. We use this form of communication on a daily basis throughout the planet. We rarely stop to think about how wondrous and seemingly magical this advanced technology is, and we seldom ponder on how this new form of communication impacts us as a culture. Advanced digital communication not only enables and emboldens us, but could be potentially harming and hindering us as a culture as well as socially
Digital citizenship teaches students how to operate safely ethically online while acting respectful to others online. Respect online also extends to respecting “fair use” and copyright guidelines. To be good digital citizens, students need to understand the good citizenship rules. However, to be truly responsible and effective digital citizens, digital literacy is crucial. Students who are good digital citizens will have background to avoid plagiarism and to respect copyright and intellectual property rights. Teaching Digital citizenship principles teach students to respect others online. Good digital citizenship and cyberbullying are incompatible.
