Dinosaurs roamed the earth many million years ago while roaming parts of Maryland for many of their history here on earth. There were many species that were predominantly found in this location. Around twelve species of dinosaur like animals can be traced back to these parts of Maryland. Dinosaurs wandered in this area from Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous periods. Maryland had a distinct climate changes during these periods. Once it was tropical and had volcanoes and changed to warm and shallow temperatures. Because of these temperatures we were able to find preservations of these few dinosaur fossils. These fossils resisted decaying and were found in low lying areas and were buried in alluvial sediments. If they were not destroyed by other
Stephen Gould’s essay “Sex, Drugs, Disasters, and the Extinction of the Dinosaurs” completely agrees with Joseph Williams and Gregory Colomb’s essay “Argument, Critical Thinking, and Rationality.” Gould’s essay deals with three theories for the extinction of the dinosaurs, two of which he argues are entirely invalid because they are not in accordance with the basic rules of argument laid out by Williams and Colomb in their essay. Gould also states that the third theory of dinosaur extinction, natural disaster, follows all the rules that Williams and Colomb espouse, and thus is a sound argument. Gould, Williams, and Colomb all state that the world has a problem with irrational arguments being shoved down people’s throats, and call for a
Although the Ediacaran period was well before the first appearance of dinosaurs it shows that there were fossils many years ago. When dinosaurs first appeared things had changed there was still shallow water which meant that bones could be fossilized.
In the two essays being discussed we learn that science has a vast range of definitions. Science is the effort to understand (or to understand better), the history of the natural world and how the natural world works with observable physical evidence as the base of understanding. Science is about how the hypothesis is developed and how well it is defended.
Sedimentary rocks interpret dinosaur habitats through encased environmental structures of the past. Through sedimentary rocks, paleoecologists’ can examine the arranged formation of sedimentary structures to specify what type of environment the dinosaurs’ lived in. An example of a specific sedimentary rock structure can be seen through formed weathering and ripple marks by how wind and sand formed distinct patterns in the past layered sediment. These arrangements provide interpretations on the structure of the sediment and the habitat of encased fossils, through modern day comparisons
The environment in the ancient sea, which contained crustaceans, molluscs, and echinoderms, helped the hypothesis that 112 million years ago the area was covered in shallow lagoons. Numerous Cretaceous dinosaur tracks have been found near Glen Rose, Texas. This is where horseshoe crabs were found in Paluxy River.
British Colombia in Canada, much like California in the United States, used to be a shallow sea and home to much sea life and is now home to thousands of marine animal fossils. For this reason it is believed that Dinosaur Provincial Park consisted of a lot of sands and muds that are characteristic of costal plains (Sues, Henderson, & Tanke, 2010, pg. 1292). When Sues, Henderson, and Tanke (2010) where going about measuring fossil shifts and the amount of fossils that have been lost they took into account the amount of soil that erodes away every year, the vertical and horizontal distribution fossils found within the park, and large landmarks such as rivers and glaciers that could effect fossils in the area (pg.1293). Accounting for these factors
Since the 1980s the most popular theory for why dinosaurs became extinct was because of a meteor, but many people are skeptical of whether or not the meteor was the only factor in the extinction of the dinosaurs. In Stephen Brusatte’s “What Killed the Dinosaurs,” Dr. Brusatte talks about how the mystery of the extinction of the dinosaurs was a hug influence on his life and caused him to become what he is today. As a teenager Brusatte had a chance to talk to Walter Alvarez, the man who proposed the idea of a meteor being the cause for the extinction of the dinosaurs. Alvarez was able to come up with this hypothesis by examining the clay band between the Cretaceous period and the Paleogene period. The Cretaceous period was a time when the Earth had a surplus amount of dinosaurs and the Paleogene period was the time period directly after the Cretaceous period where dinosaurs had become extinct. When Alvarez studied the clay band he had discovered that the band was saturated in iridium which is an element common on meteors and asteroids. This led him to believe that a meteor may have led to the downfall of the dinosaurs.
Because dinosaurs are animals that lived millions of years ago, we are entirely dependent on the fossils that they have left behind for any understanding that we hope to gain. As any paleontologist will tell you, fossil hunting is difficult. There are no certainties, no guarantees. A certain amount of luck is as valuable as any scientific knowledge.
The end-Triassic or Triassic-Jurassic extinction event occurred around 200 million years ago is and thought by numerous have helped dinosaurs to be the dominant species on earth for 135 million years. It additionally finished life for generally 50% of all species that were available around then. Until this event, mammal like animals known as therapsids were much more than the ancestors of the dinosaurs, known as archosaurs. The dinosaurs survived better compared to the early proto-vertebrates, and this extinction event may have altogether tipped it to support them clarifies #########. Of the Big Five, the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event has the least number of current researches. Its cause stays under debate,
Secondly there is the Volcanism theory of dinosaur extinction which is to do with volcanic activity wiping out the dinosaurs. The end of the Triassic period is when these super continents had separated from each other, during early Cretaceous period Gondwanaland had begun to break apart. When continents move the continental plates move as well slowly, whilst moving they can collide, slide under or over other plates. The plate boundaries are generally sites of geological activity. Pressure can build up causing a break at weak points called faults. These faults may cause volcanic eruptions of earth quakes. The theory is so much volcanic activity and earthquakes were occurring toxic volcanic gas began to settle on the Earth's surface poisoning the dinosaurs as well as earthquakes killing them
Evolutionists say dinosaurs lived million of years ago. Scientists have estimated that the last dinosaur died approximately 65 million years ago. Scientists still are not sure how they died, but they suspect that climatic weather, diseases, changing plant communities, and geologic events could have had something to do with their extinction. The oldest Jurassic dinosaur was a Basal Netheropod from Great Britain. Scientists have found fossilized eggs, bones, and feces. Dinosaurs have been unearthed by creationists on their ranches and land in the United States; men and women have found thousands of dinosaur skeletons and other artifacts that were left behind in the prehistoric ages. Scientists have found some fossils as small as rats, but
Plate tectonics did play a part in discovering what was the demise of the dinosaurs. Walter Alveras and his team were trying to discover why the Earth’s magnetic flip-flopped from south to north and they felt that the answers could be found in sedimentary rock samples. The sedimentary layer of rock was 65 million years old and formed a boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods, known as the “KT” boundary. This boundary was made of clay and it was a devoid of fossils.
The word dinosaur was invented in 1842 by Richard Owen. Dinosaur comes from the Greek word “deinos” and “sauros” which translates to fearfully great lizard (“Learn about Dinosaurs”). Dinosaurs are always named in Greek and usually named after their unique fossils, where they 're found, it’s size or a person. Before a dinosaur can be officially named it must be approved by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. It’s difficult to figure out how dinosaurs sounded, mated, behaved, what color/pattern they were and which ones are male or female. Paleontologists have however been able to discover that dinosaurs hatch from eggs, their bones have growth rings which can help figure out their age and that the larger dinosaurs lived for roughly 100 years and smaller ones for less. All dinosaurs evolved from other reptiles during the Triassic period. Dinosaurs are either herbivores or carnivores and are divided into two major groups. Bird hipped, Ornithischian, or lizard hipped, Saurischa. In the Saurischa hipped dinosaurs the pubis bone is down and to the front but in Ornithischian hipped it is point down and towards the tail (“Zoom Dinosaur”). The next step was to examine how dinosaurs behaved and their characteristics.
Dinosaur extinction: An analysis of events and theories that possibly led to the dinosaurs' demise.
These techniques led to the discovery of the boundary between the two eras. A single thin layer of clay found within predominantly limestone rocks established this. By comparing the marine life found in, above, and below the clay, the marine life, like the dinosaurs, had been terribly affected by the extinction event. The percentage of life in the upper layers was dramatically lower than that in the lower. This was far more compelling than what was suggested by dinosaur’s fossils.
