Summary of Key Issues As a disability case manager, I have been assigned to the case of Susie who works as a general labourer in a unionized lighting equipment manufacturing plant and distribution centre. The Disability Case Managers job is to facilitate the recovery of employees and their return to work in the most effective manner in regards to cost and what is best for the employee. Disability Case Managers handle the cases they are assigned to in a very systematic manner going through a multitude of steps to reach a conclusion about the case (Dyck,2013) . Susie experienced a soft tissue lower back injury as a result of bending and twisting while loading 40 pound cartons of switches from a loading platform to conveyor belt. Based on Susie’s job description she is required to be able to handle frequent load between 10-25lbs and required to bend, crouch and kneel. If Susie is assigned to the manufacturing assembly line, she is required to be standing doing repetitive manual tasks bending and reaching for up to 3.5 hours being given a minimum 15 minute break. Comparing this to what Susie actually works; Susie describes her job as physically demanding and occasionally handling heavy loads. Although this is not a regular occurrence it needs to be addressed and made sure that when Susie is presented with a task at work, she needs to have the proper training which she has not received to do fine manual work off the assembly line. Since her lower back injury Susie has been working steadily since September. On April 5th, Susie was loading boxes onto a pallet on a forklift at waist height. In Susie’s case this affects her greatly as she is worried that if she returns to work she will get re-injured and leave her son motherless like she was. Vocational factors that need to be examined include degree of job satisfaction, changes in work, previous work activities and promotion from management to return to work. Issues here include lack of job satisfaction due to the high manual labour, and insufficient work environment. In addition another major issue in this case study is the lack of support from management to return to work, making the employee feel unwanted. Medical factors which can be obtained from the family doctor are critical to obtaining return to work information. Key issues surrounding this are are confusions with the return to work date and the difficulty with pain management that Susie has to deal with. Finally psychological and performance factors are critical to understand the Disability Case manager perspective. Psychological factors in this case would be the employee’s reaction to the injury which was very negative due to the worry of her employers not treating other co-workers fairly when they were injured potentially meaning they could not work again which is not a possibility
