Migration processes have been existent throughout all times and in all regions of the world. Rural-urban migration is a form of so-called internal migration which means a movement within a country and which stays in contrast to international or intercontinental migration. It refers to the movement of people from the countryside respectively the rural areas into the cities, often the metropolitan cities of a country. Rural to urban migration leads to the concentration of services and facilities, such as education, health and technology in urban centers, which disadvantages rural communities. It also causes psychological effects, such as the stress that result from traffic, high living costs and taxes. This paper is going to deal with the pattern of rural-urban migration in general types and causes in India.

Inter-Regional Migration: It is called as inter-regional migration when the migration occurs between regions.
 Intra-Continental Migration
It is called intra-continental migration when people move between countries of one particular continent.
 Impelled (forced) Migration
Impelled migration is also termed as imposed or reluctant migration. At times the living conditions in a particular country are not very favorable due to religious persecution, political issues or warfare. In such a situation, people are not forced to leave the nation, but they make decision to leave the country, though reluctantly, which is called reluctant migration.
 Step Migration
At times, the migration takes place at a less extreme level or a series of shorter migrations from the place of origin of a person to a particular final destination. This migration is called step migration. The movement is made first from a farming area, to a village area, then to a town and then to a city finally.
