As these three stories progress so does their relationship with one another. Emily become more than a caregiver that takes care of Eliza. She becomes a girlfriend to gregarious David. Jill and jack were undeniably the most attractive couple on stage. Jill was a very bright young lady with ambition beyond the flower shop. Tension between Matt and Garrett thicken, especially when Matt waves off Garret concerns on their

Garrett’s in a romantic relationship with Matt. This couple have been together for years. In many scenes you see you see a disconnect between these two. Garett is ready to tie the knot on their relationship. Matt on the other hand is all business and work. This couple is defintity a modern day couple. One wanting more and one not noticing the other couple wanting more. I commend the dedication that Kyle gave to his character. I know its hard to display love to the same sex on stage. I will be the first to say this couple was very believable. This long-term couple had so much tension for multipe reasons. Many attandence member could relate to

The visual that a play presents is a dominating factor in the quest to invite an audience member into a world of which they feel a part. In a play such as Bus Stop by William Inge, this is especially important because Grace’s Diner plays a primary role in the storytelling. Inge’s use of the iconic American diner to tell his story is ingenious. Simply setting eyes on the set inevitably evokes pleasant feelings of familiarity and comfort in the minds of most audience members. A diner is a place where people gather; a place where individuals from different backgrounds share a similar experience. Inge crafted his characters meticulously in order to create contrast, conflict, and chemistry that would drive the plot through the forced

Research for The Laramie Project, Moises Kaufman's nationally successful play, began one month after a horrific crime occurred in Laramie, Wyoming. Members of Kaufman's theatrical group, Tectonic Theater Project, travelled to the open ranges of the West in order to gather in-person interviews from Laramie's populace. The purpose was to capture the emotions, reflections, and reactions of the people who were most closely and personally associated to the crime—the brutal beating and subsequent death of a young gay college student named Matthew Shepard. This incidence had become a national symbol of the struggle against intolerance and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in the U.S. One of the most powerful “moments” in the play was “Dennis Shepard’s Statement” in which Matthew’s father delivered a moving and very
Ourselves Alone by Anne Devlin, details the lives mainly of three women living in the midst of civil war and trying to reclaim the lives that they could have had if the war hadn’t torn into Irish family structure. Josie, Donna and Frieda struggle for a life with the men that they think they love, but are constantly foiled by the confrontations that beat down their doors for raids in many scenes. In fact Josie at one point berates herself when her maternal instincts win out over running the news of area patrols, as the daughter of a higher up in the organization Josie would have frequently seen family sacrificed for the cause, and the play highlights the stories of these forgotten children being produced by the troubles and killed just as quickly.
On November 20th, 2015, I went and saw The Circle held on the first floor of Hugh Gills Hall at San Jose State. The work was written by David Eggers, and directed by Jessa Brie Moreno and Joshua Marx. The play is about a company called “The Circle” that develops surveillance technology. Throughout the play, the audience can interact with actors and the setting in order to learn more about the company and as it progresses. It focuses on the three founders (played by Vincent Macareno, Elizabeth Gibbons, and Kevin Jasper). One character, Mae Holland (played by Jessica Osegueda), is primarily looked upon during the play as she is caught breaking the law. As the play continues, Mae’s journey is documented from being tentatively accepting of the
Wallace Michael “Wally” Shawn, one of the better-known playwright and actor in the American theatre, draws a parallel between the mentality of his characters and the role of the government through his work The Designated Mourner. However, Shawn’s foremost drive in this dramatic play is to literally play with the audience; not through content, but through form that dictates how the audience will interpret a play. A monologue drama narrated by the accounts of three characters, The Designated Mourner’s style is marked by digressive monologue, simple dialogue, and limited action. By abandoning the orthodox “conflict-and-resolution” structure, Shawn creates a honest world with thought-provoking and provocative ideas where traditional “thoughts and feelings” are void. Nevertheless, Shawn creates a powerful tragedy of love, humanity, politics, and whatever it is deeply in us that can become afflicted.
“Stuff Happens” is a play written by David Hare to illustrate the events that lead to the war that United States had against Iraq (the war on terror). This play illustrated the conflicts that George W. Bush, the president during the time, had with the rest of his cabinet with going into war. Some of his cabinet members, such as Wolfowitz, were skeptical about going to war with the Middle East, while other members, such as Rice, thought war was necessary. People who had ideologies similar to Rice’s, believed that it was crucial to differentiate themselves from the previous administration, President Clinton, because he believed that President Clinton’s idea to create peace with the Middle East, was ineffective. President Bush’s administration
