Organized Crime is an underground operation that profits from the sale of illegal products or services based on the public's demand. Organized crime came about as a way for incoming immigrants to the United States to make a profit throughout the 19th century. When they were discriminated against and turned away from employment because of their ethnicity, they banded together to make a profit so that they could one day live the “American Dream.” However, organized crime really takes over and starts to become a problem in the 1920s with the introduction of the 18th Amendment on January 16, 1920 which outlawed the production, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Organized crime; is a group of individuals that work together to illicit profit through illegal and sometimes often violent methods1 and two of the most famous groups are the Mafia and the Irish Mob. The two groups can be traced as far back as the 1800’s and had originally formed together for their financial gain to improve their lives and to protect themselves against the corrupt police officers. However over the years they have developed this infamous reputation tying both groups together, when there are substantial differences between the two. Throughout time organized crime has had a prolific impact on the United States and the world as a whole. Specifically in the 1930’s when prohibition was in effect and even after it was repealed. Their was one group that stood out in the midst of all the organized crime of the 1930’s. That group is called the Mafia. The Italian based criminal syndicate was one of the most powerful and influential groups when it came to organized crime in the 1930’s. Their numbers were vast and their powerful reputation concerned the national government at the time. Though it is smaller in numbers today, the Mafia had its time of success and power for organized crime in the 1930’s.

The Mafia was first developed in Sicily in feudal times to protect the estates of landlords who were out of town. The word Mafia, derived from the Sicilian word, Mafioso, means family. Today, Mafia is a name which describes a loose association of criminal groups. These groups can be bound together by blood, oath or sworn secrecy. Many people had considered the Sicilian Mafia as the most ruthless mobsters of the twentieth century.

In this quote we find a potential reason to why the idea that the mafia was born during the making of the modern Italian state has become leading with scholars.
