The Roman Empire covered almost all land touching the Mediterranean Sea, they conquered As North as England, as South as the Sahara Desert, and from what is now Portugal to the Middle East. The Western Roman Empire is believed to have fallen in 476 CE due to multiple reasons that includes economics and invasion from barbarians. Out of the eight possible reasons that Historians believe caused the fall of the Roman Empire, having economic problems and overreliance of slave labor wound hurt the Roman government. The Western Roman Empire had a financial crisis from multiple wars and overspending, this caused Western Romans to have oppressive taxation and inflation that distanced the rich and poor. In order to avoid taxes, the rich fled to the country to own land and tax the people that lived in it, which is known to be a fiefdom. During this financial crisis there was a decrease of workers so much that Western Rome depended on slave work to work …show more content…
Within Rome not many people would have spent money to stimulate the economy due to the Rich leaving cities and the poor having high taxes that they could not pay. Whatever trade Rome exported was disrupted by the Vandals, and all of these problems would lead up to Western Rome having an economic crisis that left them weak to surrounding barbarian tribes that invaded Rome, and faced its fall near the end of the fifth century. Some historians believe that the Roman Empire fell in 476 CE for several reasons like from a financial crisis that weakened the Empire and was invaded by tribes. The reason why some historians believe this is when Rome fell, was because this is where the capital was, which was invaded by several groups of tribes in the fifth century and in 467 Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus was
For almost 15 centuries, Rome was one of the largest Empires in the world. They expanded from the Atlantic Ocean to the Euphrates River located in the Middle East. At the time the Romans were winning wars left and right which got them a considerable amount of land. At one point they had so much land, Emperor Diocletian had to split the Empire because it was no longer practical to govern the whole Empire just from Rome. Many of my fellow historians have been making many theories of how the Roman Empire fell. A few theories, to some extent I agree with would be economic troubles, military overspending, and overexpansion. Though there are many reasons that the fall of Rome could have happened, the major influence of the fall was the barbarian invasions because of every problem that the Roman Empire had, the barbarians used that as that to weaken them more.
The Roman Empire was a glorious civilization that lasted for a long period of time, and was two million square miles in size. It is mostly known because of how big and strong it was, but the Roman Empire could have held that title for a longer period of time. There were several entities that can be held responsible for the fall of Rome, such as Emperor Diocletian, the government and ethnic groups that were new to the empire. Unfortunately the extremely famous, big and strong empire started to fall gradually between 190 A.D. 410 A.D. due to three causes. The causes for the fall of the Roman Empire were the empire’s sheer size, racial weakening, and splitting of the empire into two.
To start off, the loss of money and goods was an economical issue that influenced the fall of the Roman Empire. Loss of money symbolized a key factor like loss of trade. In the third century AD, Hostile tribes and pirates disrupted trade in land as well as sea. Losing trade deprived Rome from money and goods, making it harder for the economy and maintaining the citizens of Rome. It also affected Rome’s key trading route, the Silk Road. The Silk Road always lead to the heart of Rome where all trade passed throughout it, these routes were very critical to Rome’s economy. Without trade the Silk Road slowly died down. In addition to loss of trade, increase of taxes made workers abandon jobs and ceased the production of money. No money and no
Many historians believe that Rome’s overreliance on slave labor caused its fall. As the early Roman empire was mainly agricultural, it used the majority of slaves as agricultural laborers. After decades of fighting war after war, Rome was teeming with slave labor gained from prisoners of war. Peter Temin, a professor at MIT, estimated that the population of slaves in Italy was “around 6 million, 1 million of whom lived in Rome itself.” This would mean that over one-third of Italy’s population was slaves. Even though they were a huge portion of the population, slaves were treated terribly. Masters
A1. For an empire that lasted nearly 500 years, the fall of the Roman Empire was influenced by various different events. Four troubled ingredientes lead to the demise of the the greatest empire of all time; politics, money, social, and war. It is important to note that the fall of the Roman Empire does not mean that the romans lost everything, it is just a reference to the fall of the western roman empire. One of the causes of the fall of the west was that of the rise of the east. With the rise of the east, coupled with constant battles which weakened a military, that at the time, was the pinnacle of militaries. With constant battles came the spending of more and more money. The politics within the roman empire also lead to its demise, as corruption ran rampant throughout the senate.
There are adherents to single factors, but more people think Rome fell because of a combination of such factors as Christianity, and economy, and military problems. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as the reason for Rome's fall, by some who think the Fall of Rome happened at Constantinople in the 15th Century. Most people think it occurred during the fifth century, after the western division of the empire.
The Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD because of the political, economic, and social problems. First, the Roman empire collapsed because of the division between the east and west and invasions of barbaric tribes. According to the article “8 Reasons why Rome Fell”, “The fate of Western Rome was partially sealed in the
The Empire had suffered from many bad emperors. Emperors such as Nero and Caligula damaged the Empire. Also, the Roman Senate and Praetorian Guard were corrupt. The Praetorian Guard would auction off the seat of emperor to the highest bidder. The Western Roman Empire’s economy suffered greatly. It had become too large to maintain. Also, many of the poor could not afford to pay their taxes and many of the rich left to avoid paying taxes. The Empire also relied heavily on slave labour and there became a shortage of it. Without many slaves, the agricultural production declined. The Western Roman Empire had many wars with barbarians which resulted in the city of Rome being plundered many times. There were also many civil wars which left the Empire in disarray. The decline of the Western Roman Empire led to the end of the once great empire that was a shining beacon among
The Roman Empire lasted from around 27 BC to 476 AD. It included territories from the west and South Europe. The Roman Empire was challenged over years. Through its struggles and complications, it would not be able to survive. Due to their fight and changes it lasted for a while but could not overcome it. There are three main reasons to why the Roman Empire fell and they're because of military overspending, corruption, and Christianity.
The fall of the Roman Empire happened slowly. There were many reasons for why Rome fell. One of the reasons say the empire was too big and there were not enough soldiers to guard the empire, some of which were not loyal because they did not want to be a part of Rome. Another reason says that Rome fell because citizens of Rome had to pay heavy taxes for the army, which made the economy weak. The taxes made many citizens go into poverty. Also, many Romans were unemployed. Small farmers could not keep up, so they tried to find jobs in the city, but there were still not enough jobs. A third reason to explain why Rome fell is that there was corruption and a decline in spirit of citizenship. Some emperors wasted large amounts of amounts of money
So, what could have caused an empire of such great power and influence to fall? It is logical to determine that the fall of the Roman Empire is a domino effect, a cocktail of reasons that when put together result in the decline and ultimate fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD.
In the late fourth century, the Western Roman Empire crumbled after the 500 years. Many reasons have contributed to the fall of the empire and historians say that that Rome adapted rather than falling. Military failures, bad emperors and increased civilization of the people in the empire affected the strength of the soldiers. The economic decline and mass migration across Europe also contributed. Many say that Rome was just too big to control easily and that corruption became rampant. Many Roman citizens lost trust in their leaders causing instability and the Empire to lose its grip on Europe. The Roman empire’s fall was dated in 476
There were many reasons to why the Roman Empire fell. For example, the rising of the new religion, christianity. Most of the reasons to why the Roman Empire fell corresponded with each other. A lot of the time Rome emperors were overthrown by other leaders/emperors from other places fighting to obtain Rome.
It is a big debate on what caused the fall of the Roman empire. There are many ways Rome could have fell, but there are main that severely damaged and caused the roman empire to fall. The roman empire fell in 47 B.C. It was located in a small town in central Italy's. It was Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands.
To begin with, financial problems had contributed to the decline in Rome as it had made Rome’s currency have a decreased cost. A reason towards why the currency had less value was because the emperors had bribed their soldiers with money for loyalty and they also used a lot of money for parties and festivals. In doing so, they had lost large amounts of money making them greedy making some start to steal from the treasury to keep bribing and hosting large events. While losing large amounts of money, Rome didn’t produce currency like the way the emperors were wasting the money so they would have to give less and less until they just make the money to be worth more and doing so would mean that they need to give less money for things while during trades, the value would just lower and they would probably request for more currency. Another reason towards financial problems was presented in an excerpt from a historical text written by Priscus who was a Roman ambassador to the Huns in 449 CE. Inside of this excerpt was the
