In order for change to be meaningful, innovation must be at the forefront. Constantly pushing boundaries is what allows us to improve the lives of those around us. Disruptive technologies are one of the main forces of innovation. After examining the Philadelphia Water Department, we decided on these two key disruptive technologies.
Green Stormwater Infrastructure
The most likely disruptive technology to be to be utilized in this situation is green stormwater infrastructure. There is a strong push for more eco-friendly systems going on throughout the nation. A study done by McGraw-Hill has shown that the number of companies who incorporate sustainability into their operations is up over 25% since 2006. The Philadelphia Water Department is no

The Philadelphia Water Department has strong internal databases from the information we gathered from our advisor, Amy Shin. They have databases for sharing geospatial data, communications during projects, and also from the timeline/history of a project. Moreover, the Philadelphia Water Department has a database for comments on designs, who has won bids for contracting out services, and a query-system for searching for this information after it has been saved. This is a strong overarching system that allows for interdependence and better flow of work within the department as a whole. The shortcomings that we saw were in regards to the external databases, including the citizens and partners under the Philadelphia Water Department;s umbrella. Our advisor made it apparent that what is needed is a database for the flow of information between them and their partners. Currently, information is slow to reach this group, with Powerpoints conveying much of the material to decision makers. Qualitative information is simply taking too long to reach those that need it. External databases would help improve the ability of the Philadelphia Water Department to provide services and implement diverse programs with many partners. For example, Amy Shin also made a point to say the geospatial data exchange between different departments and partners could help to facilitate capital investments, determining where a project is needed or where many partners can convene on a
Buzzing, ringing, clicking, swiping, and tapping are all sounds we make with technology, but how far will it go? Societies may be overruled by technology in the future, according to Aldous Huxley. He creates a dystopian society where everything is unpleasant and overruled by technology. Technology is so advanced that is controlling the society and taking the society as its prisoners. Aldous Huxley explored a new way of seeing technology in the 1930s through his novel Brave New World while introducing the world to the impact technology can have and how it is able to threaten a society.
Technology, like any tool created by human imagination is put into place to help in the ways that nature cannot, to the point where a prominent definition is, “an application of science to solve a problem.” (Ramey, 2013). Huxley’s rendition of a utopia is in answer to this problem common to the race of man, the error of human nature. In this novel technology is the cure to which the virus of humanity has inject upon the world, and it is this negative relationship between creator and creation that drives the plot of the story. The reader is then put into a position of caution towards the advancement of science, Huxley’s words become a warning to protect against a future fight for the traits that define humanity. A Brave New World shows that there is no correlation between technology and humanity because they exist in two different worlds, the utopia created leading to the deterioration in the link to the basis of humanity because of the corruption of individuality, the loss of freedom, and a more importantly a lack of chaos.
I work at a restaurant in Southlands, and every night I notice that 75% of people tend to be on their phone texting, tweeting, or playing the latest game, not noticing who or what is around them. In the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, this scenario was predicted. This book published in 1932, is about a dystopian society which is too busy to notice how brainwashed they are.Currently, in 2017, we live in a society where kids who are barely old enough to walk to old people in nursing homes can't get enough of their technology and are on it nonstop. A technological driven society is incapable of realizing the reality around them.
In Brave New World they highly depend on technology, that’s similar to our world because we highly depended on technology. For example in the brave new world the government is runned off of technology, they program the way people are born to how they think and act. In our world, we our similar because the media, money sources and the government controls everything that we see which bases out how we act. Despite its differences we are all monitored and controlled in several ways. The new state is a controlled society that reflects our society in a few similar ways. Their government controls and watches them and trains them to act a specific way. In our world The media, capitalist and government moniter things to try and calm
The entire world in Brave New World is united as the World State, governed by ten World Controllers. The entire world is run by these select people. In Brave New World technology plays a huge roll in the standards of life, and provides a 'perfect' world. Technology, which has brought mankind from the Stone Age to the 21st century, can also ruin the lives of people. In Brave New World, Huxley shows us what technology can do if we exercise it too much. Humans can lose humanity if we rely on technology too much. The world Huxley created is a working utopian society that doesn't have disease, war, problems, crisis but it's also a sad society with no feelings, emotions or human characteristics. There can be no 'utopia' because there cannot be a
In the novel Brave New World, it tells you that technology controls humans (also government controls) from the time they are in the test tube. Technology is so advanced that they can make you highly intelligent or not intelligent while you are still an embryo. Mr. Foster says (chapter 1, pg. 14) “The lower the caste the shorter the oxygen.” This means that one cannot have control over their own intelligence. You cannot try your best, or do more work because your intelligence is pre planed. Also, there is no choice as to whether one will allow technology to think for them, because their intelligence is chosen when one is an embryo.
Disruptive technology is a new way of doing something that initially does not meet the needs of existing customers. This type of technology tends to open new markets and destroy old ones. While, a sustaining technology produces an improved product that customers are eager to buy. This technology provides better, faster and cheaper products on established markets.
Utilizing databases within a department allows users to access various types of information all at once as well as link information from different sources. Information data is processed, organized or summarized, records data is a collection of logically related fields or items, and file data is a collection of related sequence of records.
There are three trends that caught my attention while I am researching about the trends of transformative technologies in healthcare. The first trend is the electronic health record cloud base management (NAICS Code 518210, Data processing, hosting, and related services). The second trend is the use of mobile devices and wearables in recording and capturing patient health information (NAICS Code 334220, Mobile communications equipment manufacturing). Finally, is the growth of medical applications and ground breaking software(s) in the healthcare industry (NAICS Code 511210, Software Publishers).
In this essay I will describe and explain the causes and consequences of disruptive innovation. Firstly I will write about what dualism is, why it is important and how to achieve it. I will continue with describing difficulties, which may occur on a company’s path towards it, namely overshooting and inability to recognize the start of a new industry cycle. Further on, I will go deeper in the reasons, why incumbents fail to recognize the new entrants on the market, specifically “attack from below” and other discontinuous patterns of change. In the end I will describe some of the responses taken by established companies to disruptive technologies.
By inspecting most prevailing storm water treatment arrangements of different area, it is found that in 78% cases, we are not actually treating the storm water. We are only planning to discharge the storm water to natural water bodies, without treating. Somehow in remaining cases, the above-mentioned techniques and many more like this have serious limitations. They generally need a large area which is not possible in urban regions. Maintenance is also tedious and costly. As research, technology, and information transfer have improved over recent years, alternative approaches are being sought by the public and regulators to reduce the environmental impacts from new development and redevelopment. Developers and designers are also seeking alternatives to expedite permitting processes, reduce construction costs, reduce long-term operation and maintenance costs, and increase property values. Numerous manufacturers have developed proprietary devices to treat storm water runoff.
Imagine this: the year is 1980, a family is sitting around a dinner table engaging in conversation about how his or her day went, everyone is listening to each other, all is well. Now, fast foreword to 2016, that same dinner table looks completely different. Everyone is looking down, distracted by his or her phone, no one is really listening to each other; this is the reality of today and it shows how much we have changed in the short span of a decade. Without a doubt, I believe that the use of technology has more negative effects than positive ones on our world today. The use of technology has created a place where no one really knows how to talk or communicate with each other, teens and kids can't function without their phones, and eight
The evolution of technologies has developed a great impact on the Global Society in the past recent years, will further develop and increase societal changes. Although technologies are evolving for a certain purpose to the society, it said to be controversial, as according to techno-pessimist society, they view technology as a threat being out of control. Thus, it is crucial to identify the factors that affect the implementation process of contemporary technologies, to understand the controversy of converging technologies to the society, and to achieve successful development of technologies and provide solutions to population’s dilemma.
Answer: Information and records are of critical importance to the functioning and controlling of systems in general, including organisational systems. Given the central importance of information and records to systems operation, including public sector organisations and the societies they exist to govern, we should not be surprised to learn that public sector reform efforts that overlook the information component often fail to meet their immediate objectives and the longer-term goal of establishing a framework for good governance.
c) A new technology is adopted by those who see an advantage in it. The fast-to-market strategy targets the hardcore gamers, who are always trying to enhance their gaming experience. The EPOC product positioned to provide an enhanced experience would attract this segment of users. The communication and information provided about the product plays a big role in early adoption. Releasing the development kit online and the Game Developer’s Conference presentations would generate a lot of interest and buzz for the product and this interest can be sustained with meaningful and directed information sharing. The gaming community is well connected and a lot of adoption and diffusion of innovation happens through word-of-mouth or by an influential change agent. Pricing is also an important factor for consideration while introducing a new technology and when the product is priced very high it can hurt the diffusion. The product availability and channels of distribution also play a huge role in the diffusion process. The retail strategy through Best Buy, where the user can see and trial the product would quicken the diffusion process. The planned demo for the product is a great way to decrease the learning gap and increasing ease of use which would directly result in increased adoption of the product. Some of the key factors for Emotiv to execute this strategy are
