The book “Divergent” was a novel by Veronica Roth. The book falls into the categories of realistic fiction and scientific fiction. The setting of the book is set in a futuristic society in Chicago where it is divided into five factions. They are Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, and Amity. The story of “Divergent” is told by first person since the narrator, Beatrice is explaining the story from her own perspective. Identity is the main theme throughout the book. In addition, a person doesn’t have to be labeled as one thing, they can have multiple traits. Finding out your relationship with people and figuring out where you fit in plays a big part to the theme of the story. Two of the major characters in the book are Beatrice Prior (Tris) and Tobias Eaton (Four). Beatrice is a Dauntless transfer from Abnegation where her family had been. Later on, throughout the story, Tris learns that she is a Divergent. A Divergent is when someone has all traits from all five factions. When it comes to physical appearance, she has blue eyes and blonde hair. Beatrice can be described as brave, curious, unique, and intelligent. Tobias is also from Dauntless but is also a Divergent. Four lead, train, and initiate the members of Dauntless. Tobias can be described as fearless and can be guarded. Other minor characters in the book are Andrew Prior, Natalie Prior, Cristina, Will, and Jeanine Matthews. Andrew is the father of Beatrice who is an Erudite-born but was
“...are called...Divergent.” she says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it...”” (page 23). In Beatrice’s case she is belongs in three of the factions: Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. At the Choosing ceremony she choose Dauntless.
Divergent is a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic Chicago. The setting also looks like a perfect Utopia, but as you go on reading you find out that it has a lot of problems. In the novel there was a war that was caused by differences in people's ideologies. The war caused Chicago to be divided into five factions. Each faction has a virtue which they value and cultivate. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The Abnegation faction values selflessness, the Amity peace, the Candor honesty, the Dauntless bravery, and the Erudite intelligence. Throughout the novel the main character is Tris which was born in Abnegation and chose to go to the Dauntless faction. Chicago in the novel is governed by a group of people from
In a world where the people live in a city with a surrounding wall as their limit, Beatrice becomes Tris by choosing her own path, encountering a large contrast of people, and learning being different can be the hardest task in life. Although the uniqueness about her allows her to see the corruption of people in her world. Divergent, a novel by Veronica Roth, is a book that has been banned and challenged many times for being violent or too mature for the age gr oup. However, Divergent is an extremely valuable book that young adults should read as a result of its realistic characters and unpredictable plot line full of the themes of growing up and social survival. One reason Divergent is such a valuable book is because the characters
Tris however was not the only dauntless member that was divergent. A man named Four which was one of the leaders in dauntless was also divergent. Four was just a nickname Tobias was Four’s real name. Tobias was nicknamed Four because he could pass simulations within four minutes
Characters: Although there were a reasonable amount of characters in the story, there were only two that were important and consistent throughout the book. The others didn’t have much of an impact into the story.
The book divergent was about a girl name Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where there are five distinct factions which is each factions thinks one virtue is best. Dauntless is bravery, Erudite is love and knowledge, Abnegation is pro-self-sacrifice, Amity is hearts and friendships, and lastly Candor is into telling it like it is. Both the societies of THG and Divergent similarly tried to minimize the problems in their world. This is the illusion of goodness, to the fact that they have ‘solved’ all problems, they have used the segregation of their people using physical boundaries, keeping their people divided or the unknown away.As the mayor is recalling the events of the past, he says that "The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens." This uses a metaphor to emphasize and exaggerate that the "shining" Capitol is surrounded and followed by the other separate 13 districts. With the illusion that Panem the Capitol is the greatest and has saved them (the other districts) and shows how the land of Panem has segregated their people, of high and low classes. While Beatrice is getting ready for her aptitude test she says that it will help her choose "... which of the five factions I belong in. ... I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or to abandon them. The repetition of the word f "I will decide" gives an insight and illusion that she is able to decide her destiny and that she is not controlled by the governing ways , you can also find segregation of her to her family, this quote also
During many events in the movie, the idea that human nature gets in the way of society’s progress, shown through Jeanine’s remarks on human nature, for instance” it's an important ideal, but sometimes difficult to fulfill. It goes against our fundamental human nature. But that's exactly the weakness we need to overcome.”, and “The system removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will. Divergent threaten that system.”. In these cases, Jeanine believes that human nature and morals are a weakness to the progress of society and is eliminated through the faction system where people are obliged to do what they are told. The second quote explains how divergents are a threat to the faction system with their ability to have free will. The factions system was set up in the movie to make sure that the Another example would be the initiation of the Dauntless initiation during the movie. During many scenarios, the initiates were put in positions that required them to hurt someone that cannot fend for themselves and is even exemplified when Four tells Tris during one of the simulations that “As a Dauntless soldier you have to follow orders you don't always agree with... She's an innocent... and I have to kill her. But I can never do it... unless I look away.” This quote from Four explains how the dauntless
Many characters are featured in the book, but there aren’t many profound characters. Sarah is the main one, and the one we have most information about. We know she is bold, brash and courageous. She escaped from her abusive father, she snuck into the army and
Veronica Roth’s dystopian series, Divergent, takes place in a futuristic Chicago, where society is divided into five factions. Beatrice, an Abnegation born, is what they call Divergent, meaning that she does not fit into any one faction. She transfers to Dauntless and begins to find out the many secrets being kept from the citizens. Tris soon realizes that the factions are not all what they claim to be. Dauntless is turning into a ruthless army, Erudite into a greedy faction wanting power, and Candor has been lying by hiding unknown facts from the other factions. One theme that develops throughout this series is this: A utopian society does not exist, even if there was a good idea to start out with, corruption will always occur.
The movie Divergent is based on the novel by Veronica Roth. The book and film takes place in future Chicago where there are five factions; Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. People in future Chicago take a test to determine what faction is most like them. If multiple factions are the result of the test, then it is determined that the person is Divergent. This is a rare story of Beatrice Prior’s experience as being Divergent and surviving in the Dauntless community.
The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. This semester I learned a lot about writing in English 151. It has been a roller coaster ride with these essays for me this semester. I learned step by step how to write a good essay and how to have your readers be engaged in what you’re trying to tell them. Each essay I did has taught me something valuable I can take to the next level of English. I feel as if as the semester went by I did not take my writing that seriously and that reflected in my grades I received in each essay. It made me a better student and writer and it will reflect next semester. In this essay, I will reflect on what I learned throughout this semester that you should apply in your writing when you begin English 151.
The past two weeks of dissection have been very valuable learning opportunities and extremely enjoyable. Dr Molyneux and the demonstrators were so helpful and caring; I felt they truly made a difference to how much I understood from this dissection experience. As well as this, I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity to dissect a human body and would like to thank the individual who kindly donated their body for this purpose.
