Divergent is a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic Chicago. The setting also looks like a perfect Utopia, but as you go on reading you find out that it has a lot of problems. In the novel there was a war that was caused by differences in people's ideologies. The war caused Chicago to be divided into five factions. Each faction has a virtue which they value and cultivate. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The Abnegation faction values selflessness, the Amity peace, the Candor honesty, the Dauntless bravery, and the Erudite intelligence. Characters: Although there were a reasonable amount of characters in the story, there were only two that were important and consistent throughout the book. The others didn’t have much of an impact into the story.

Both the societies of THG and Divergent similarly tried to minimize the problems in their world. This is the illusion of goodness, to the fact that they have ‘solved’ all problems, they have used the segregation of their people using physical boundaries, keeping their people divided or the unknown away.As the mayor is recalling the events of the past, he says that "The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens." This uses a metaphor to emphasize and exaggerate that the "shining" Capitol is surrounded and followed by the other separate 13 districts. With the illusion that Panem the Capitol is the greatest and has saved them (the other districts) and shows how the land of Panem has segregated their people, of high and low classes. While Beatrice is getting ready for her aptitude test she says that it will help her choose "... which of the five factions I belong in. ... I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or to abandon them. The repetition of the word f "I will decide" gives an insight and illusion that she is able to decide her destiny and that she is not controlled by the governing ways , you can also find segregation of her to her family, this quote also

During many events in the movie, the idea that human nature gets in the way of society’s progress, shown through Jeanine’s remarks on human nature, for instance” it's an important ideal, but sometimes difficult to fulfill. It goes against our fundamental human nature. But that's exactly the weakness we need to overcome.”, and “The system removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will. Divergent threaten that system.”. In these cases, Jeanine believes that human nature and morals are a weakness to the progress of society and is eliminated through the faction system where people are obliged to do what they are told. The second quote explains how divergents are a threat to the faction system with their ability to have free will. She transfers to Dauntless and begins to find out the many secrets being kept from the citizens. Tris soon realizes that the factions are not all what they claim to be. Dauntless is turning into a ruthless army, Erudite into a greedy faction wanting power, and Candor has been lying by hiding unknown facts from the other factions. One theme that develops throughout this series is this: A utopian society does not exist, even if there was a good idea to start out with, corruption will always occur.

This semester I learned a lot about writing in English 151. It has been a roller coaster ride with these essays for me this semester. I learned step by step how to write a good essay and how to have your readers be engaged in what you’re trying to tell them. Each essay I did has taught me something valuable I can take to the next level of English. I feel as if as the semester went by I did not take my writing that seriously and that reflected in my grades I received in each essay. It made me a better student and writer and it will reflect next semester. The past two weeks of dissection have been very valuable learning opportunities and extremely enjoyable. Dr Molyneux and the demonstrators were so helpful and caring; I felt they truly made a difference to how much I understood from this dissection experience. As well as this, I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity to dissect a human body and would like to thank the individual who kindly donated their body for this purpose.
