Being at university is such an incredible experience because it gives you a sense of what the real world looks like. You shape yourself and allow the entire experience to decide the kind of human being you want to be. Make sure you take advantage of every opportunity to meet new people, share stories and laugh. Diversity is something that as students of NMMU, we should all strive for.

Racial diversity is something that is often discussed on college campuses. As a student who self-identifies as a minority in more ways than one I often feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the subject of racism and race. However, often times when these issue are discussed I learn something new; this was the case when reading the articles this week. This week’s articles examined the issue of race from different perspectives. This allowed me to re-examine the issue in a fuller manner; it also allowed me to question some of my own notions that I hadn’t really challenged before.
Diversity is a term known for, "variety." To be diverse is to have a range of different types of people all in one place. Different types of people can range from their race, background, social class, age, or religion. Those are just a few examples that can separate a person from others. To be aware of diversity around you is something everyone should take note of. Many people may not realize that they live in such a diverse world that they do not know how to cope with someone when they do find someone with a different background than they do. For many young adults, college is a time of great discovery as it presents them with an incredibly diverse assortment of people with whom they may mingle with. However, the mentally ill are often excluded from these interactions. Due to numerous misconceptions about their condition and the ensuing stigma that this creates, college students with a psychiatric disorder are left to endure unnecessary shunning from their peers. Fortunately, some universities have taken it amongst themselves to prevent this injustice from occurring, a prime example of which is the New Diversity Initiative program.
Washburn University has always been proud of having diversity since it first opened its doors to the public 151 years ago. If you are to look around campus many are able to see how much diversity is valued by the campus as a whole, they know everyone is different and each person has their own story to tell. If a university made it where no one is allowed to talk about where they came before and how they ended up where they are in life. what is the point of being proud of who you are? For me, it is important for each person to be proud of the person who they are because they could have had to overcome so much in life to make it to this point of being an undergraduate.
Diversity on college campuses has increased, which has let people assume that racism decreased and acceptance expanded gradually, however minorities still face prejudice and discrimination. Harvard University presented a research where they gathered college students from 4 particular public universities and questioned them about the social behavior they have experienced or witnessed. In the contrary, they discovered that college students have encountered racist comments or negative facial expressions towards them from Caucasians (Caplan, page 31). This has led to propositions for instance, improving social conduct between children in school, more gratification in regard to one’s culture and positive outlook toward the culture of others because America’s obsession with race and racial attitudes continues to affect individuals emotionally. It is urgent to spread diversity at a younger stage of life, for upcoming children that are starting school. The need of role models around the nation is necessary and relevant to help multicultural education in the schools. Diversity has become significant since people all over the country are passionate about others knowing where they come from and making it possible of a more diverse society in the future.
As a member of several clubs and organizations, I have always valued the wide range of people you can find within the walls of my high school. If you walk into my Physics lab, you will find me collaborating with a dancer strongly involved in his cultural heritage and a volleyball player in the engineering academy. If you come to my Calculus class, you will see me calculating derivatives with a football player, a snowboarder, a National Honor Society officer, and a painter. The word “diversity” is often used to describe a cross-cultural population, but it is so much more than that. At Bartlett High School, students originate from hundreds of different cultures, with an abundance interests, and participate together in an assortment of activities.
Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville is a school that supports diversity. I would recommend partnering with them.
College is for people with the intellectual capacity for a higher education, not for equal representation among races to better the college experience. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a quota is an official limit on the number or amount of people or things that are allowed. They were put in place to prevent discrimination and bias within the selection process for college applications. However, the supreme court illegalized quotas in 1789. Now, we have affirmative action: the practice of improving the educational and job opportunities of members of groups that have not been treated fairly in the past because of their race, sex, religion, etc. However, affirmative action causes minorities to compete against each for success, rather than against majorities. I did not have a hard time finding an article on community colleges; this one came right to me. However, as the author points out, there is a great deal of research missing on the community college level. Taylor (2015) states, “Because we have little research on LGBTQ students in the community college context (Leider, 2012; Zamani-Gallaher & Choudhuri, 2011), the vast majority of the research and empirical evidence is based on the 4-year context” (Taylor, 2015, p. 60).
This article is a qualitative article exploring the different literary perspectives taken on LGBT students attending HBCUs and some of the challenges that are faced by LGBT students attending HBCUs. The authors has also offered recommendations to help HBCUs bridge the gap between LGBT students and the campus environment. The purpose of the article is clearly stated from the beginning to the end. The authors begins by discussing the history of HBCUs, the reasoning behind having them and also the close relationship that HBCUs have with religious organizations, something that can cause a big issue with LGBT students. Diversity is a major quality that attracts me to Northwestern. It is important for me to be surrounded by different backgrounds, experiences and outlooks. The diversity at Northwestern is shown in the types of organizations and programs available to students. Another quality is what makes Northwestern an excellent university. Underneath their mission statement, its states, “Northwestern is committed to excellent teaching, innovative research and the personal and intellectual growth of its students in a diverse academic community.” A university that cares about their students’ success and takes pride in their mission to provide the greatest education is a crucial aspect on why I want to attend to Northwestern.
I believe that I could contribute to the diversity on campus. I was raised on a farm in a small town in Pennsylvania. If I were to attend University of Colorado Boulder I could teach my fellow classmates the jobs on the farm and how important they all are. I could also teach them the importance of hard work. Growing up on a farm meant waking up before the sun and working long hours. Each day on the farm there was a new job to be done and it also involved a lot of hard work.
For some, a college campus is the first time they are in a diverse environment. Especially at a school such as Potsdam which is located in a small, rural town. With so little people living in the surrounding areas there is thus not a diverse population. The local people who then come to this college may have never seen a black person before because that is how isolated the town is. Even for students that grew up around what they thought was diverse are surprised by the diversity they encounter here. College is a diverse place, but it often lacks a strong sense of diversity. At UC-Berkeley, the course description for "Politics and Poetics" (Fall Course 2002) stated that "conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections." (SAF 1). Though the instructor later apologized for the description, this is the sort of encouragement conservative-minded students are greeted with many times during their college experience. It is said that in class, students are taught that their country -- and Western culture in general -- is tainted by racism, sexism, and oppression (Stearn 2).
U.S. schools and colleges vary from numerous points of view. Some are open, others are independently employed individual; some are huge urban colleges, some are two-yr. group universities, others little rustic grounds. Some offer alumna and expert political stage, others point of convergence basically on undergrad instruction.
