The novel Giovanni's Room tries to portray diversity in many different ways, not only by their nationalities, but also their socio-economic class, physical actions, and sex orientation. The story entail different places that people are coming from, and going to, suggesting diversity in where they came from, in their cultural background, and in where they want to seek meanings of their life. David comes from the United States, finds beauty in the city of Paris, where he met Giovanni, who’s from Italy, but for sure they are here in the same land for different reasons. As for Hella, also from the United States, met David in Paris, but decides to spend time in Spain to think about the choices she has to make concerning David. Moreover, socio-economic class differences was also illustrated in this novel. Giovanni, David, Jacque, they were obviously of different classes. Portraying diversity in a very subtle way, rather than telling about people engage in reforming or protesting activities, James Baldwin tells a story of a young American man. In the novel Giovanni's Room, David and Hella was about to get married, but realized they had different desires. From this marriage, Hella wanted to feel like a women, have a family and have children. On the other hand, David might wish to share the same belief, but what he wanted more was to escape Giovanni’s room. Later, when Giovanni was charged with murder, he realized how much he cared about Giovanni. Difference in sex orientation was illustrated in this novel also, the Hella and David believe being straight is only the way, even while David was with Giovanni, he was in denial of same sex relationship, “What kind of life can two men have
