As a white male, raised in a middle class, rural family, I am not diverse at all. For most of my life, I even failed to see the importance of diversity. The majority of my high school looked the same, acted the same, and thought the same way. When I found out that my brother is gay, my perspective on diversity completely transformed. As I learned of his struggles, from being harassed at work to feeling that he had to pretend to be somebody else while at school, I realized diversifying is much more than something companies did to boost their public reputation. Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.

To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. Bush, said these enhancing words and it now concerns me in this day of time. That now the world wants to imprison the Hispanic culture all for varies stereotypes. With President Trump theory of the wall this will cause many more issues not only with Hispanic immigrates but within America itself. Without the construction of the wall, America wouldn’t be wasting money, it will keep generating diversity and wall wouldn’t go against our founding father's rules and regulations.

I am currently at a placement site, where there is not much diversity when it comes to race. Many of my students consider themselves white or non hispanic with the exception of seven students. Out of those seven, two identify as African American, three identify as hispanic and the other two identify with two or more races. Besides race, I have diversity amongst gender, socioeconomic status, learning styles, accommodations, and modifications. My classes are comprised of more females than males who come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of the students come from well off families with occupations such as pastors, educators, military personnel, business owners, and doctors while others come from farmers, grocery store workers, restaurant employees and construction workers. Diversity is a very broad discussion today, it can range from race, gender, sexuality, political or religious views, or even mental disorders. In America, which is basically a melting pot of different cultures in itself seems to struggle with diversity in the one place it really shouldn’t, tv and movies. But how could the entertainment industry affect the way we view others? Simple, through representation. Representation is the act of showing off a particular group of people. What I found interesting in this chapter would have to be about Diversity “The New Social Norm " in the chapter it talks about the different cultural backgrounds, opportunity changes, peoples beliefs, and religion. This country was founded on social and economic diversity in which it does tend to categorize everyone into a certain group to feel a sense of validation of whom they believe they are or should be. In the USA one of the most diverse place on earth, one would think that cultural diversity would not be an issue that needed to be addressed or be an issue at all. Right? I mean this country is probably the only place on earth where you can find nearly any nationality, ethnicity and type of people living among each other. You have Blacks, Chinese, gays, lesbians, transgender people, whites, Europeans, Africans, Middle Eastern people, Asians, and Hispanics, all on one piece of land. How can cultural diversity be a problem when the land is made up of so many different types of people? Shouldn't cultural diversity be striving in America? When the duchess of Windsor once said “A woman cannot be too rich or too thin.” No this does not apply to man. Men hold a different standard then woman are, it is okay for man to date woman with a lot of money and nothing is ever said about the man except that he must really love her. But if we flip it the other way around and a woman mad the statement that a man could never be to rich or too thin, then we have a whole new ball game. Woman would be ridiculed for making such a statement. People would say she is only dating him for his money, she is nothing but a gold digger, she does not love him she only loves the things he can buy her, or the places he can take her, she is just looking for someone to take care of her. They way society looks down on woman is not fair. It is discrimination to say that a woman cannot be happy with a man because he makes good money and is educated without people judging her. They always assume that there is an underling reason that she is with a wealthy older or younger man, and it can never be simply because she truly loves him.

The United States of America can be regarded as one of the most diverse and progressive countries in the world with people from all corners of the world contributing to the changing culture of the melting pot that is America. Despite this, our government inadequately represents our diverse population, specifically in Congress, with many officials being Christian, older, non-Hispanic white males dominating government.

America is a strong country, but no one ever said it was perfect, and it’s not. I don’t always agree with everything and love all of our choices. I do believe, though that I am very lucky to live here. We get a say to where we want to go, what we want to be, and how we want to live. There are some things that we should do better at, but doesn’t every country?

I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.

We live in a society where people come from different countries, they belong to different cultural, religion, ethnic groups, and races. All these factors come together and contributes to differences that make us unique from each other. Hence, a multicultural country with huge diversity. This reflection journal will cover what “human race” is and what role it plays in ones’ personal life and in a nursing profession. Moreover, what bias, assumptions and judgements are, and how to avoid them. Lastly, what caring is and what role does it play in nursing.
