The day began like a normal summers day. I woke up and was getting ready to go outside and play bullet with friends, which is dodgeball but if a ball hits one of your limbs you lose that limb. But then my dad asked me if I wanted to go fishing out in the Mackinaw river with him and his friend. So I said yes and we got in the car and drove to his friends house. Once we got there we got our fishing poles and snacks and drinks loaded and noticed we forgot the bait. So we drove to nearest gas station and bought some worms.
Things are getting tense, teachers are telling students in the halls to wear red the next day to support them in the game, while the students are laughing and promoting the opposite, to wear orange. Excitement is starting to boil to see who will win, because this year, is the year the decides it all. Who really is the best?
It is a known fact that sports are a significant factor into the way of life for Americans. Families will sacrifice much of their lives to see one of the children become a professional athlete. One of those sacrifices is money. Money for some families, seems almost unlimited while for the majority of families, money is something difficult to come by. Depending on which family a child belongs to, their chances of playing college or professional ball is drastically different. The world of high school sports is becoming more financially demanding than ever because camp prices are rising at an overwhelming rate, families are acquiring debt in hope that their kid is successful, and student athletes of lower class families are not getting the head starts of upper class family athletes.
Hooverball is a combination of tennis and volleyball, but is played with a medicine ball. The game was designed for players that were not superstar athletes, but instead members of the United States government looking to get a quick workout. It made as more of a friendly competition and an exciting way to exercise rather than the typical boring jog or strength training routine. Although the game has not been as popular as sports such as baseball, football, or basketball, it has made a recent surge of popularity among members of the CrossFit community and the select few who participate yearly in the Hooverball Championships in West Branch, Iowa.
College sports isn't what everyone makes it out to be. Some people relate college sports to High School sports only to the extent of: it's a level harder. Many feel that college sports isn't that big of a deal. What little people know is being a collegiate athlete is a job. The life ou hae is set out for you on the court. Most of the free time off the court is spent doing homework. There's hardly any time for a social life, and or time for your family. Being a collegiate athlete isn't just about playing sports anymore, this is your job.
Many parents and school leaders want to toss dodgeball in to the banned bin. It is just ridiculous! Why ban it when it can be changed? Dodgeball can be modified, people need to stop banning and start changing. We cannot just ban every game when someone finds a small flaw in it. there is some problems with the game though. Not all students want to participate, children are getting out of shape, and they are getting lazy. Well these things can easily be changed. One reason parents are worried is because most children do not participate in the game.
Walking back to the Lower School playground, I reflect on how much laughter and joy I had out there. A time where after school was spent running around with friends, instead of hours of homework. Everyday, I would run outside to the playground and play games of soccer, football, and everyone's favorite, kickball. Specifically, on my first day of school I remember playing kickball. It was a sunny and crisp fall day. I felt the goosebumps rise on the surface of my arms and legs, but I knew once I started running . The first person I saw was Tim, and he asked if I wanted to play kickball with him and a few others, and I accepted. It was so much fun running around the bases and hearing all the screams of kids. First base was a metal pole, second
Your Out!! Recently, Principals in Elkton Middle school have decided to ban dodgeball. Parents and other officials have told principals the game of dodgeball leads to violence, and even bullying. While others complain think that if you ban dodgeball you are ruining kids childhood. Which side would you be on?
A bratty princess who thinks they can get anything to their desire is what American is turning into. Children are being raised in a society where they are being taught they can always win. This is because of games like Dodgeball for example, are being banned everywhere. Dodgeball should not be banned. This game helps children learn to lose, let out aggression, and and they love the game. What happens when you take something away, You have to replace it. The games that replace dodgeball are not fun, but dodgeball is.
Students, Brian Harpin and Brent Nelson at Kankakee Kays High School [Illinois], enjoy playing soccer for the their high school team. They like being part of a team and feel they do not need to be the best players. "You have to play the game, give it your best shot, and not give up," says Nelson. Some of Nelson’s teammates let the competition acquire the best of them. "Sometimes when they missed the ball, they took out their anger on other people," he says. Other teammates told them to just play the game and have fun. All students must play competitive sports in school to make sure that they do not become obese, and so they can stay in shape.
We need to get rid of competitive sports at Monticello Trails Middle School for the greater good.
Every athlete dies twice, once when his life fails, and once when he/she does. However, one leads to the end while the other starts a new beginning. Nobody in this world is perfect, including myself. I have learned this lesson numerous times, but never as much as when I humiliated myself realizing that you can never just jump into something and expect to master it in a day. But humility, realization, and training helped me fix my failure. I’ve always loved the sport of basketball and always dreamed of being an all-star in the NBA, just as millions of other kids do. Unfortunately, I never realized that stars need fuel in order to keep shining. Not until the day I decided to try out my skills on my high school basketball team.
I was outside around 8:00 or 9:00 P.M. It was already dark outside my dad had just arrived home from work. She called me and my brother inside for dinner. I remember going inside and just sitting down to get ready to eat when all of a sudden a series of gun shots erupted down the street.
ZOOM! Have you ever played Softball or Baseball? It takes a lot of practice. You have to practise (work hard and try) teamwork (work with your team) because you can’t play it by yourself. Your going to need a lot of equipment. You’re also going to need to join a team.
Peers usually have a very high impact on a way a person may behave in society. “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” - John Wooden, UCLA Basketball Coach (Coaching tenure -- 1948-1975) Behavioral problems were shown to have a decrease in the presence of a high school sport. According to “usada.org” a growing body of research finds that in addition of playing a high school sports, behavioral problems are sought to decrease. Why is this? “Early behavioral and emotional engagement in high school can buffer against participation in problem behavior, including delinquency and substance use.” - Esther Entin, M.D. Studies have shown that if they have an emotional connection to their school, they are more likely to try to meet society’s expectations of them, and they may also develop and value a positive relationship with their teachers, teammates, and class students. These bad behaviors decrease with the presence of a high school sport, thus letting good behaviors show more. The social impact a high school sport can have on ones life is monumental, and this does nothing but encourages kids to go out and join a high school
Based on the in-class lesson material and any additional research you wish to do, should pong-like games such as "handball," "soccer," "volleyball," "breakout" etc. be considered different games, or just different versions of the same game?
