Ever since the humans have been separated into different ethnic groups racism has existed on Earth. The idea of racism has existed since the beginning of time but today racism is not as prominent as it once was but it still lives. Racism is kept alive through microaggressions or the eununciating of an offensive and racist comment. During the Great Depression, racism was in its prime, Harper Lee’s renown novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, brings the ideology of racism to light. This chapter on the framework of the colorblind ideology seems to be the most concrete and logical chapter in the book. This chapter is very well put together, with examples that cover a wide variety of topics. He also illustrates the concept of the frameworks playing into one another very well. The premise of these four frameworks as an “impregnable yet elastic wall that barricades whites from the United States’ racial reality” makes perfect logical sense as an explanation for the “racism without racists” culture seen in the US (47). Changing attitudes towards race relations forced a change in the manifestation of racist ideologies.

Racism is a word that sparks a nerve in many individuals today. As hard as it is to believe, racism is still a big factor in what we as a society know as a unified America. Colorblindness has helped disseminate racism in the United States since the Civil Rights movements of the mid-sixties, by perpetuating anti-blackness and racial discrimination against other minorities. Colorblindness is a new form of racism, the new “Jim Crow” which “Legitimizes the state and society as racially neutral although they are not neutral” and creates the belief that we have become post-racial and we are all equal. While preaching homogeneity, colorblindness uses mechanisms by which white racial domination is structured and as a result, colorblind racism has caused a widespread of anti-blackness and racial discrimination against Latinos, Muslims, Arabs, and South Asians.

Race has been an issue in North America for many years. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva discusses the new racism in his book, Racism without Racists. Bonilla-Silva classifies the new racial discrimination as color blind racism. Color blind racism is then structured under four frames (26). Color blind racism is believed to have lead to the segregation of the white race from other minorities called white habitus. Color blind racism and white habitus has affected many people, whom don’t even realize that they are, have been or will be affected.

After reading Dog Whistle Politics by Ian-Hanley Lopez, I became disgusted. I was with some disbelief that there were such a thing as dog whistling and how politicians use it to get votes. Most of this dog whistling tactics involves racial slurs. So I decided to do some research to see if any of the current Presidential Candidates of 2016 fell into this category. I looked at all the Republican, since Lopez’s book revolved around the GOP in using these distasteful tactics. I looked at all of the Republican Candidates polices and statements that were stated in debates, speeches, interviews, and social media sites. Unfortunately I found a candidate that was notorious for dog whistling, this Republican Candidate was Donald Trump. When it comes to Trump’s statements in debates, speeches, interviews, and social media sites a lot of negativity is involved around immigration issues in the United States.

A popular notion says a child is born “color-blind” and remains color-blind until they reach adolescence. The problem with this concept is that people believe it to be a positive idea. However, it actually presents a damaging ideology – it suggests that race should not be a factor when trying to determine the type of person an individual is. I see it as an unsophisticated approach to view people because race is a vital part of our existence. Race is an attribute that makes individuals differ from one another, and the problem is not the differences in the colors of our skin. The problem is that we attempt to detach ourselves from the reality of being racially different. Racism will seem to inevitably exist, and in order to even try to end the malice, parents should begin teaching children about racism the right way.

Many people in the United States society believe that people of all cultures, races, and ethnicities are now on an even playing field. People with this belief support their logic with the argument that since equal rights for people of color and women have been required by law for some time now, we are all inherently as equal as claimed in the Declaration of Independence. Many believe that race is no longer an issue, a viewpoint frequently referred to as color-blindness. National polling data indicated that a majority of whites now believe discrimination against racial minorities no longer exists. Prejudice, the chain of hatred and ignorance, has haunted our history at every step. In the twenty-first century prejudice and its destruction can be viewed in many forms of modern literature. Two of the most famous and rejoiced literatures that examine the theme of prejudice are Harper Lee’s realist fiction novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and Martin Luther King’s heart warming speech ‘I Have a Dream’. Both texts explore the theme of prejudice of white Americans on the Blacks in the racially tense times of the early twentieth century. Unlike Harper Lee, Martin Luther King goes a step further to persuade the audience that there is prejudice present and we should be motivated to stop this evil from blossoming in our world.

Many are unaware of the effects that race has played in their lives over the years. Some may not understand its implications, but are very oblivious to it. Race can influence such things like attitude and behavior. Nowadays being white or black means something more than just a Crayola color. No longer are they just colors, they are races with their own rules and regulations. People of color have been inferior to the white race for centuries. In their own way Zora Neale Hurston shows this concept in her story “How it feels to be Colored Me” as does Richard Wright in his autobiographical sketch “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow”.

Ever since the beginning of early human civilizations, there has always been the presence of superiority over one another in regards to the pigmentation of one's skin color. Racial discrimination has plagued society through the centuries of the ancient Romans to the middle ages, towards the industrial era and the modern era in which we live now. However, have we sincerely progressed in terms of how we treat and view the people around us? Or have we been stuck with the perceptions of our ancestors that knew no better than to think better of themselves above other races? Putting into consideration the questions that berate our modern day lives of post segregation America, the ways of fixing the detrimental societal contagion need to involve psychologically altering people's minds from the ways of old, changing how we treat the American education system in regards to the children, and conforming the different socio-economic varieties into a system the equalizes the individual despite where they come from.

Racism is a very controversial topic for many people to discuss, and now-a-days it seems like it is becoming more and more apparent with the deaths and limitations that are plaguing our societies near and far. There are many ways racism presents itself in our society and cross culturally. The most common places that racism presents itself is in mainstream media and marketing, our own governments and laws whether they be foreign or domestic and in the minds of the people in our own societies.

People in society are like crayons in a box; some are sharp and beautiful, some have weird names but all are in different colors; but they have to learn to live in the same box. Every day, many people encounter other people, creating many social issues and racism is one of them. Racism is one of the most controversial problem in our society. This is the ideal that many people engage in consciously and the way some people think without even realizing it. Racism is a racial discrimination but discrimination is not always racial. People focus on all different racial groups of people and discuss their fairness, discrimination and prejudice by appearance in their environment. The racism and discrimination throughout American history represented by the stereotypical ideology set by society, the progress in reforming the society and empowerment for younger generation nowadays. This can be seen in Eudora Welty’s literature work, “A Worn Path”.
