Having dogs in my life is a custom for me and I do not want to imagine life without them. Because of this, I currently work at “The Lil’ Red Wag Inn”, a dog boarding and grooming company, and it has helped teach me the proper way for caring for dogs. Many humans think only about teaching dogs; However, dogs have taught me many genuine qualities that we, as humans, tend to leave behind at times. Dogs have taught me to be supportive, compassionate, and responsible. Dogs are very forgiving creatures who remind me what matters most in life. They have and always will love us unconditionally, this is something that is hard for most people including me. Dogs have impacted my life in a way that no human ever has by teaching me loyalty, love unconditionally, and enjoy the little things.
Being supportive often consists of being there for each other. Dogs are pack animals, so whatever we do, they will support us. By being supportive, dogs can ease us from stress, anxiety, and even depression. Many Studies show that interactions with dogs can decrease stress in humans. Just looking at or petting an animal can increase levels of Oxytocin. Every day when I come home my dog greets me with support and genuine happiness, this relieves me from all the baggage I've gathered throughout the day. Knowing you have someone to come home to that will support you and love you unconditionally is a great source of happiness and stress reliever. Dogs act as a role model for those with anxiety, dogs only live in the present so they're not thinking about tomorrow or yesterday. My dogs have helped me cope with anxiety, by helping me to become more mindful and appreciate the present. Dog owners are also less likely to have depression. Caring for a living animal helped me to feel more needed and loved, and it has always taken my mind away from anything negative that might have happened during the day. Talking to my dogs always help me to work out my problems. It’s hard to feel lonely when you get to come home to somebody who's always happy to see you. Replacing fear and self-criticism with self-love is easier while having a friendly companion by your side, and doing so makes life easier to manage and more enjoyable.
Anybody who has ever had
This has led to the belief that dogs can provide company, affection and support to people who are going through a difficult time or who feel lonely. Dogs have aided humans in tasks such as hunting, livestock herding, and guarding. However, as society moved from small rural communities to increasingly large metropolitan areas, the dog’s role changed. Throughout the years a more specific type of
Doctors will sometimes then prescribe things like medications and sometimes therapy sessions in order to ‘help’ people that have depression and/or anxiety. Pets can help though with things like this. They can be there for emotional support, and studies show when people pet animals such as cats, it calms them and keeps them from having times of severe depression and anxiety. The article, “Can Cats Help With Depression And Anxiety?”, states, “Cats also help in making you more active. Cats are not ideal characters (unless they're sleeping), rather the love to run around and play. Actively engaging in playtime with your cat can help relieve you of any anxious feelings or help avoid” (Bribri, 2017) Having a cat around can calm someone and keep them from having their anxious feelings for the time being. Having a cat with someone can keep them calm, and take their mind off of worries and other anxious thoughts and/or ideas as their focus is in their cat. This can make a great positive impact on the life and/or lives of a person that is dealing with or trying to deal with their anxiety. Another quote is, “The first reason for why cats can help you with your mild to moderate depression or anxiety is by giving and receiving unconditional love. Whether you realize it or not, your fluffy kitty loves you dearly and you love kitty back. It’s a wonderful, uncomplicated love that you look forward
Emotional support animals can take on a multitude of jobs that “may include reminding the handler to take medicine, providing safety checks or room searches, or turning on lights for persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, interrupting self-mutilation by persons with dissociative identity disorders, and keeping disoriented individuals from danger,” (Brennan). These animals are often considered pets but are actually so much more than that, emotional support animals have a very important role in protecting the mental health of their owners and keep them safe. Not only do these animals protect people’s mental health but they also give people a purpose. Taking care of one of these dogs or other animals gives people something to take care of and focus on. Knowing that there is another living thing that relies on them can be very grounding and keep people connected to something outside of themselves.
Unconditional love: All training aside, dogs are animals who provide unconditional love to their humans, and this in itself can be a major encouraging factor for people with depression/anxiety to fight their illness. Moreover, knowing that your psychiatric service dog is there to take care of you encourages you to move out and meet people, which helps you manage the symptoms of your condition better.
Main point one: Companionship is important to have in your life, even if it comes from your dog. When life gets stressful it’s nice to have a companion to play with, take a walk with or even cheer you up. Companionship can be hard to come by with humans sometimes and easily found in dogs. While their personalities vary according to the breed of the dog, one characteristic remains the same, their loyalty. Dogs make great listeners, maybe because they can’t tell you to stop talking, but either way they seem to listen with interest. Many dog owners find themselves telling dogs things they can't seem to tell anyone else. This is what makes dogs good therapeutic animals. A dog is an especially good animal for someone who lives alone or suffers from depression. Having a dog present can also help people who have suffered a tragic loss in their life and need the company of another life for comfort. I know from my personal experience of losing a loved one, what a dog can do to help you through. Owning a dog gave me responsibility at me weakest and gave me a
Puppy snuggles and dog kisses are comforting when life is stressful. Dogs are loving to the families they live with and are very compassionate creatures. Puppies and dogs are good at cheering you up when you are down. Dogs are also super loyal to their owners so they want to do anything they can to make you feel better on a rough day. Not only are dogs comforting once you get home, the knowledge that your dog
Have you ever noticed that dog owners are happier and healthier than non dog owners?Dogs have been used for centuries and we still love them as our trusting companions. There are many reasons that dogs are called a “mans’ best friend”. Having a dog can have many benefits including lower risk of cardiovascular complications, they can improve your mood, and they can help with many physical and mental disabilities in the form of service dogs or mobility support dogs.
Dogs can help us humans with mental health. Many service dogs are used to help people who are deaf or people that are blind. How about people with mental issues? Dogs not only help us with physical problems but also with mental problems like depression. In the article “Therapy pets and humans with mental health issues” the author “ dog time” starts to state in the 3 paragraph “Trained animals [iii] are used to benefit patients suffering with emotional and behavioral disorders, depression, autism, substance abuse, and dementia.” (2010) This can show how animals can help us with mental issues because animals can understand many struggles us humans have, because after their trained they can not only understand us but also
Imagine a life with a best friend that never gets mad at people and never talks back. A famous saying you hear dad to day is a dog is the only thing on the earth that loves you more than they love themselves. This is a pretty ideal situation for most people. Studies show that a dog can be more than just a pet. A dog can be a best friend, a listener, and a healer. Animals have influenced humans through out our evolution they have become domestic and we have become reliable on our house pets for many reasons. Dogs assist many different groups of people. They play a major role in child development, heal the sick, and benefit the elderly.
Dogs will protect you and they can also provide comfort and support in forms of affection and companionship for an individual suffering from various mental and emotional conditions.
For millions of years dogs have remained a constant companion of man. Bred from the aggressive and formidable Gray Wolf tens of thousands of years ago the domestic dog now lives in many homes across the world. Where in the far distant past the domestic dog was bred as a guard animal, a beast of burden, and even a food source the dogs of today are bred for a far more endearing purpose-companionship and love. Finding a pet dog that is more of a joy than a chore is necessary when asking: How much is that puppy in the window?
June 15, 2016, I had finally understood the importance that dogs had on humans. Walking into Rescue Village on that beautiful Summer day, my heart was racing because I knew it was the day I could adopt my first rescue dog. This day made my life completely different from that point forward. I chose to adopt a dog and to care for her and I was now not only responsible for myself but for a helpless dog. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, I am not the only one who chose to take on the responsibility of a dog, “Sixty-two percent of all U.S. households – more than 72.9 million total – include one more companion animals” (Companion Animal). A companion animal is defined as, “… our best friends, confidents, and help make the family complete”
It is proven that dogs can help humans overcome stress and anxiety. In “How Dogs Can Help Veterans Overcome PTSD” by Chris Colin, He writes about how dogs can be used as a tool to help people who suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The article states that when people bond with their dogs their oxytocin levels increase. Oxytocin helps improve trust, and the interpretation of facial expressions. This can help people with PTSD be able to overcome their fears and interact with other people. In “ Therapy Dogs Help Students De-Stress” by Jen Christensen, It talks about how at some colleges now during finals week dogs are brought in to see the students. After spending ten minutes with the dogs the
First, owning a pet can give people some major health benefits. Without a pet, a day at work or school can be stressful. By the end of the day, people could be ripping out their hair or throwing papers everywhere. This can make anyone’s heart rate go up as well as their blood pressure. Thankfully, studies have shown that interacting with a dog or other pet can lower his or her’s cortisol levels. For instance, after only three months, a group of people working with dogs were shown to have significant drops in blood pressure and stress. Pet’s happy go lucky vibes can impact their owners to feel the same, lowering his or her’s stress level. Even when someone sees a picture of their pet when they're stressed, it can immediately cause his or her’s heart
It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend. In the last 14,000 years, dogs have accompanied man by helping him hunt, guard, and protect. In our modern world, dogs help us combat in war, search-and-rescue, guide the blind, deaf, discapacitated, rehabilitate patients in therapy, aid law enforcement, and are part of our family as beloved pets (Coren). Although canine superstars such as Lassie, Old Yeller, and Rin Tin Tin portray the perfect dog we all want in our lives, these ideals are far from the truth. Many first-time dog owners expect dogs to know behaviors such as how to walk on a leash, not bite, not destroy the house, and in addition to many others. In reality, dogs must be trained on what their handler wants them to do. It is
