Domestic violence has been apart of society forever, and it rooted in traditional male dominance and the view of women as property. Still, domestic violence is still a problem that takes place regardless of the socio-economic status of a family.

Domestic violence: a taboo issue in our society, where the discussion is shut down by fear of instability or vulnerability. A crime, hidden from plain view, behind closed doors, that harms up to half a million innocent individuals every year. Someone is experiencing some form of domestic violence as we speak as for every 15 seconds there is a woman beaten around the world, and for every hour as many as 115 children are abused. Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, is a violation of human rights. It involves violent, abusive or intimidating behaviour carried out by an adult against a partner or former partner to control and dominate that person.  Violence of any form should not be accepted in our modern society it nurtures fear and hatred, and it should not be locked away as an allowable social norm. We should be better than that.

Domestic violence is aggressive behavior within the home, generally involving the abuse of a spouse or partner in order to gain control or maintain power over another. This type of violence can be sexual, physical, emotional, or even psychological in which these threats influence the other person. It is not only about physical abuse, it’s the consistent pattern of behaviors that are used to make the victim feel threatened and manipulated.

Physical abuse is the use of physical force against someone in a way that injures or endangers a person (Dating Abuse Statistics, 2013). People of all races, education levels, and ages experience domestic abuse (Violence Against Women, 2015). On average nearly twenty people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner (Statistics, 2015). This adds up to ten million men and woman being abused annually in the United States alone (Statistics, 2015). Women from the ages eighteen to twenty-four are the most commonly abused population (Statistics, 2015). Statistics say that eighty-five percent of victims are in fact women (Safe Voices, 2016). One in three women and one in four men have experienced some type of abuse/violence in their lifetime (Statistics, 2015). Most cases of domestic violence are never reported and only thirty-three percent of victims ever tell anyone about their abuse (Safe Voices, 2016).

The domestic violence is taking many ways like verbal abuse; in this include name calling and threats. Another one is Restricting freedom, in this controlling their emotions and feelings. Some people are doing the Physical abuse; in this include harassment like punching, slapping and shaking.

There are many different types of domestic violence. Physical abuse is the most obvious form, but this is not to say that outsiders always recognize it. Generally, physical violence causes bodily harm, using a variety of methods. Slapping, pushing, throwing, hitting, punching, and strangling are only a few methods. An object or weapon may or may not be used. There is not always physical evidence of physical abuse such as bruising, bleeding, scratches, bumps, etc., therefore, absence of physical marks does not necessarily mean physical abuse had not occurred. Physical abuse sometimes escalates to murder (Morris and Biehl 7, Haley 14-17).

Domestic violence is mainly physical, but also psychological, sexual or financial violence that happens within a family or a family type relationship. The main pattern that occurs within domestic violence is gender. The most common form of domestic violence is the abuse of women by men. 1 in 4 women has been assaulted by a partner at some time in her life time, 1 in 8 repeatedly so.

First of all, domestic violence is anything that involves abuse in any sort of form to a spouse or significant other.
