Don’t Light Up My Night
I remember gazing at the stars with my mom when I was a kid. She pointed out the Milky Way and a number of constellations. She told me, “there are way too many stars to count!” Now, 50 years later, when I walk outside and look up, I see only a few identifiable constellations, no Milky Way, and I would venture to say there were so few stars that if I took a little time, I could count them all. Are there really fewer stars in the heavens? Not at all. The stars are up there, they just cannot be seen by the naked eye from the vast majority of heavily populated vantage points anymore. The culprit, I learned, is called “Light Pollution”.
According to the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), light pollution is

The apparent correlation between the two is striking and invites further investigation.
Even though research into the link between light pollution and human illness has thus far been inconclusive, studies show that artificial light adversely affects both plant and animal life as well, and these ecologic effects have been well documented. For instance, according to Winslow Briggs’ chapter on plant responses in the 2006 book, Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting, prolonged exposure to artificial light prevents many trees and other plants from adjusting to seasonal variations, (Chepesiuk). The ability to bud, bloom, fruit and seed can be jeopardized leading to the ineffectual propagation of many species.
As a powerful biological and behavioral force, animals are especially sensitive to light. In many species, light acts as a magnet. According to the Urban Wildlands Group, the effect is so powerful that scientists have noted how birds can be “captured” by searchlights on land or gas flares on marine oil platforms, causing them to continually circle the light source in the thousands until they drop from exhaustion and die (Klinkenborg). Distracted by tower lights, many birds can become
Photoperiodism is the effect of the relative lengths of light and dark periods on plant growth. This occurs when photoreceptor proteins e.g phytochromes are produced by plants in response to light intensity or the absence of light. This in effect affects the height of plants. [5]
Duckweed is a small aquatic plant that is able to grow rapidly, making it the ideal specimen for our experiment. It is hypothesized that altering the amount of light received by duckweed will alter its photosynthetic rate. It is predicted that a lower light intensity will lower the rate of growth in duckweed.
Plants are found everywhere on earth, up high on the ridge and down low in caves and caverns. The types of plants that live in these places depends on many factors. These factors are separated into two different categories, the biotic factors and the abiotic factors. Some of the biotic factors include, predation, competition, and habitat destruction. Plants with limited competition and large amounts of resources will be in a higher abundance than plants with limited resources and higher competition rates will be confined to areas and either out competed or will be the dominant species. Certain plants adapt to these factors and thrive and others don’t do as well. Some of the abiotic factors include, sunlight, water, temperature, and wind. These
According to The Houghton Mifflin dictionary, night is defined as “the period between sunset and sunrise, especially, the hours of darkness” (p.887). Everything terrible happens at night. Every death, every tragedy, anything for that matter, happens at night. The significance that Elie Wiesel was trying to imply about night was a form of darkness. Darkness, as in danger. Darkness as in loneliness; loneliness as in sadness; sadness as in death. The symbol of death is expressed by the main character of the novel, Eliezer. Eliezer might not have died, but he experiences darkness, darkness of the soul, and loss of faith.
Introduction: Photosynthesis can be defined as a solar powered process that removes atmospheric carbon dioxide and transforms it into oxygen and carbohydrates (Harris-Haller 2014). Photosynthesis can be considered to be the most important biochemical process on Earth because it helps plants to grow its roots, leaves, and fruits, and plants serve as autotrophs which are crucial to the food chain on earth. Several factors determine the process of photosynthesis. Light is one these factors and is the main subject of this experiment. The intensity of light is a property of light that is important for photosynthesis to occur. Brighter light causes more light to touch the surface of the plant which increases the rate of photosynthesis (Speer 1997). This is why there is a tendency of higher rates of photosynthesis in climates with a lot of sunlight than areas that primarily do not get as much sunlight. Light wavelength is also a property of
The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in a Moneywort plant. By observing the plant in distilled water mixed with sodium bicarbonate, different light bulbs were targeted onto the plant. The measurement of the amount of bubbles present on the plant during the trial of the experiment enabled us to identify the comparisons between the activity of the light and the process of photosynthesis.
The book “Night” is a true story about Eliezer Wiesel’s life as a teenager during the Holocaust. It was written by Wiesel himself and was published by Prentice Halls in 1956, with a shorter version in 2000. Throughout “Night”, there are three powerful quotes to focus on and understand, in order to fully grasp the importance of the Holocaust.
Based on the applicable options dealing with cultural issues in our eligible films, In the Heat of the Night seems be ahead of the pack when it comes to exploiting our societal vices. The 1967 mystery/drama is based on John Ball’s 1965 novel with the same title. The film is set in the fictional rural town of Sparta, Mississippi. Sparta is a southern town that is racially discriminatory on institutional, social, and judicial levels. In the Heat of the Night seems to make many negative cultural assumptions about southern states, especially Mississippi. Sparta is portrayed as desolate town whose only citizens consist of slave-owning plantation owners, racist hicks, and racist hicks who happen to be cops. All the white characters in the film seem to be negative stereotypes. The plantation owner even has a small lawn gnome portraying a black servant. The film begins at a local dinner in Sparta where Sam Wood, a well-known town sheriff, is having dinner and a discussion filled with racist content. After leaving the diner, Sam runs over a dead man in the middle of the street. He alerts superior officer, Chief Bill Gillespie, who begins searching the town for any suspicious drifters because he believes that the murder was the outcome of a mugging gone wrong. Upon searching the train station, Gillespie finds Virgil Tibbs; an African-American homicide detective from Philadelphia who is visiting his mother. Tibbs is the one major exception to the negative stereotypes within the town
In the passage, Bogard proposes various arguments on natural darkness and its preservation. He tries to persuade the reader that preserving natural darkness is crucial by providing examples based on an organisms health, religious practices, and a national problem. The author also uses statistics to further express his opinion to the reader.
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas explores death and how those facing it should fight for their lives because death is a heartbreaking subject to him. The writer is addressing his father and pleads him to resist the power of death as it would be devastating if the father was to die from the writers perspective. Throughout the poem, Thomas writes about different traits of men. Some aspects include wise, wild, good and grave which helps create a poem that covers all aspects of a person.
"The earth's vegetation is part of a web of life in which there are intimate and essential relations between plants and animals. Sometimes we have no choice but to disturb these relationships, but we should do so thoughtfully, with full awareness that what we do may have consequences remote in time and place" (Carson 64).
Most stars, around 70 percent, are red dwarves, which are less massive than the sun. These stars are immortal, to our purposes. Their lives are several orders of magnitude longer than the sun's. There are many more that aren't red dwarves but are still less massive than the sun. Most stars we can see with the naked eye, however, are more massive, and stellar lifetime decreases rapidly with mass. There isn't a red dwarf close enough to be seen naked eye. So most that you see in the
In this study, Plant A, which received twenty-four hours of artificial light every day, will reach the maximum height amongst all plants. Due to the maximum access of light, Plant A will therefore have the most access to energy, which is a vital source of food to the bean plant. With more energy available to the plant, photosynthesis can provide an abundance of food availability which will cause the plant to thrive more successfully.
Photosynthesis is a vital process that autotrophs use to transfer light energy into chemical energy. Photosynthesis ultimately produces O2 and glucose. It, like many other biological processes, can be affected by environmental variables. The variable that we altered in the following experiment are intensity, light wavelengths, and pigment types. In order to do this, we conducted three experiments. In the first experiment, we examined the effect of light intensity by placing vials with chloroplasts with DPIP at different light distances in which the results varied. Initially, 30cm away was the most effective for photosynthesis. Then 24cm appeared to be the most effective. Followed by 49cm at minutes 25 and 30. In the second experiment, we
In this lab, varying wavelengths were used to test how light affects photosynthesis and respiration as a whole. The absorbance of lights from 380 nm to 720 nm of chlorophyll pigment from the Elodea sample
