In Oscar Wilde’s “ The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray”, Dorian Gray’s character is a highly influenced young man who is unable to maintain a stable relationship. It is shown that he destroys every relationship he has, by pushing his partners to a mental breaking point. However, in the book it is evident that Dorian lived in an unstable home, growing up, with a psychologically and verbally abusive uncle. Due to the lack of love and reoccurring abuse Dorian faced as a child, it has influenced him to destroy every relationship in which he was becoming emotionally attached to because he is afraid of getting hurt again. The act of wincing is to give a slight involuntary grimace or shrinking movement of the body out of or in anticipation of pain or distress. Hinting at the fact that his uncle caused him a lot of pain and psychological torment. In addition, to hate is to abhor something and a person does not detest something that is pleasant to remember or experience meaning that his uncle mistreated Dorian to a point in which he begins to get uncomfortable when remembering him. This insinuates that Dorian had an abusive past while under the custody of his uncle. This can also lead to the argument of “tough love” which could also be a factor in why Dorian destroys every relationship he becomes emotionally attached to, in fear of experiencing the destructive concept of tough love once more. Tough love is when someone treats another person harshly or sternly with the intent to help them in the long run, however, it is simple to believe that this idea of tough love presented by his uncle had more abuse than motivation to help, causing Dorian to ruin every relationship he has because he is afraid of experiencing such form of tough love again.
