Dr. Hayhoe: The Cause Of Climate Change

Decent Essays

I thought Dr. Hayhoe was interesting to listen to, and l also felt that people are impacting the earth and we are the cause of the changing climate within a certain degree. Many things happen because of other factors and I don’t believe humans are responsible for everything. That is why I choose volcanoes as my discussion because I wanted to know how they change our climate.

One element about volcanos and how they change our climate can be understood by the gases it spews into the air when an eruption occurs. The two gases that cause the most damage are sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Sulfur dioxide from the volcano can cause global cooling, while volcanic carbon dioxide a greenhouse gas, has the potential to promote global warming (USGS, 2015). Sulfur is the most damaging because it turns into a sulfuric acid in the stratosphere. Sulfuric acid deposition is also found in many industrial plants that burn coal and emit the gases into the air. This pollutant is now understood to affect forests and croplands far from industrial centers (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2013, p. 241). …show more content…

When it comes to volcanos, there is no option, we don’t know exactly when they are going to erupt and have no way of collecting the gas when they do.

There have been many studies performed that show humans are the major factor in climate change. They take into consideration both natural drivers and human drivers that impact our earth. “When all the natural and human-induced climate drivers are stacked up and compared to one another, the accumulation of human released heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere is so large that it has very likely swamped other climate drivers over the past half century, leading to observed global warming” (Union of concerned
