Dr. Josef Mengele's Experiments

The horrific experiments of Dr. Mengele demonstrate the cruelty of the Nazi’s during the holocaust. Most of the world today knows of Dr. Mengele of having been the doctor of death for being responsible for killing more than 6 million Jews.

At Auschwitz, Josef Mengele nicknamed, “ The Angel of Death” was an experienced doctor that experiments on kids and other people, for example, he injected some serum into a kids eye to see if the eye would change color and most of his experiments didn't have any anesthesia so his patients would feel a lot of pain.

He is known for his horribly unethical experiments performed on prisoners and immense number of bodies killed in Auschwitz. Mengele treated the majority of his patients ruthlessly, with no remorse, and as objects for his destruction. He was also known for his bad temper and was seen beating prisoners with metal poles, burning them alive, and shooting them. The only patients he treated less horrifically were twins, which he found to be enticing. Mengele would provide them with clean clothes and regular meals in order to strengthen them, and once they were healthy he would perform horrific surgeries on them (Schmittroth, 315). Mengele – The doctor violated this principle simply by harming his subjects. Dr. Mengele performed numerous experiments to include surgical procedures without anesthesia, collection and harvesting of tissue samples, and murdering subjects to facilitate a post-mortem examination (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, ND). Dr. Mengele’s experiments demonstrated no beneficence for his subjects.

“The more we do to you, the less you seem to believe we are doing it.” This quote by Josef Mengele speaks to his time spent as part of the Holocaust. Historically, many may also know him as the Angel of Death. He is infamous for the inhumane experiments he did on the Jewish children during the Holocaust.

Who was Dr. Joseph Mengele during the Holocaust? To some, he seemed a Doctor while others only saw death when his name was said. Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, in Germany in Günzburg.

“He cut into me, without anesthetic,...The pain was indescribable. I felt every slice of the knife. Then I saw my kidney pulsating in his hand. I cried like a madman, I cried out the prayer; “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one...And I prayed to die, that I might not suffer this agony any more.” (Hall). This was said by a ‘patient’ of Dr. Josef Mengele, Mr. Yitzhak Ganon. Mr. Ganon was of the survivors of the inhumane experiments that took place in Auschwitz by the hand of the abominable man that is Josef Mengele. Josef Mengele was one of the most infamous men associated with the Holocaust, his cruel experiments on twins, jews, gypsies, and the other being held at Auschwitz made him widely known for his cruelty, warranting him the title of “The Angel of Death".

The Holocaust was led by Adolf Hitler during World War II. There were many countries involved such as, the United States of America, Italy, France, and Germany. The Angel of Death also known as Dr. Josef Mengele was one of the most famous doctors that worked in the internment camps. Some of the experiments were on twins and dwarfs. Dr. Mengele used a lot of different experiments against the Jews and there are lasting effects/remnants from the experiments.

Josef Mengele was known as the “Angel of Death” and he was an S.S physician during the Holocaust in the concentration camps in Auschwitz. Dr. Mengele’s work was said to be gruesome and inhumane by his subjects. During the postwar, Mengele was detained by allied forces until they released him. He would continue to move across the continent until his captors were got closer to him. He gained access to a “Red Cross passport in 1949 and escaped to South America, where he spent 30 years traveling through Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.” He would steal other Nazi member's identities in which he would always elude the authorities. He would travel “….under a host of fake names: Fritz Fischer, Walter Hasek, Dr. Helmut Gregor-Gregori, José Aspiazi, Friedrich Edler von Breitenbach, Dr. Henrique Wollmann and, finally, Wolfgang Gerhard.” While in running, Mengele did not see he was wanted for his war crimes. Dr Mengele was known for conducting amputations on prisoners (“Rantings of a Nazi Monster 1”). Other surgeries and experiments that Dr. Mengele conducted included radiation, electricity, and other evil methods (“Josef Mengele 3”). He didn’t just perform experiments on adults, he also did it to children. Supposedly, in only one night, Josef used injections and killed fourteen innocent children(“Josef Mengele 3”).

When Josef Mengele’s bones were found, the world let out a sigh of relief. For over forty years survivors of the Nazi death camps, known as Auschwitz, were haunted by the vision of the handsome, well-dressed man with a caring smile who pointed his white-gloved finger either left or right deciding who lived and who died. Those who passed this man and survived have always remembered him as the Angel of Death. Dr. Mengele is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands at Auschwitz concentration camp. Josef Mengele’s horrific experiments prove that he is the most dehumanizing person in history.

Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, and was born in Gunzburg, Germany. He had a loving father named Karl Mengel and a mother Walburga Mengele, as well as two brothers Karl jr. Mengele and Alois Mengele. As a kid he grew up fine like any normal kid. He was somewhat popular in his town and very intelligent. Later in life he attended Frankfurt University and majored in philosophy. There he met his mentor Dr. Otmar Von Verschuer who had a high interest in twins. This is when he married his wife Irene Schoenbein in 1939. During the war Germany had a draft and Josef happened to one of the men. While in war he was wounded and was not allowed to be in the military so he was sent home. Instead of doing nothing he worked at Kaiser Wilhelm institute for Anthropology which happened to be directed by Verschuer. With Josef still being apart of the SS army he was promoted to captain and was transferred to Auschwitz.
