The underlying behavior of humans is to talk and converse with others. This basic principle of which sociology is founded upon, as humans rely on this conversation throughout the entirety of their lives to find their ranking on the social hierarchy. This is heavily supported by the concept of socialization, and the formation of groups/relationships. Socialization is the process in which individuals find groups to be a part of and adapt to the social norms of the group. This could include a new following of new set of Folkways and mores, a change in one's personality, choice of attire, and dialect, which is due to dramaturgy. Dramaturgy is the concept that behavior. All of these aspects contribute to the concept of social determinism, which …show more content…
They would then be introduced to violent norms unfamiliar to him, which he would soon become accustomed to, resulting in them to gain violent tendencies and habits. This. Would especially worsern as they progress from their teenage years to adulthood, carrying these jagged norms with them, especially as they may experience resocialization by altering their norms. One result of the norms, in particular, would be within school which due to his newly gained social capital after becoming apart from that group, heavily affects the quality of education one receives. In this specific scenario, two variables which directly influence the education of our case study are Social and Cultural Capital (Sirin, 2005).A major factor in the quality of education a student receives is Social
Social life and the way in which society acts and behaves is thought to be learned behaviour, otherwise known as the structural- consensus theory. For Pip et al (2011) structural consensus was the way humans learn their behaviour and act in ways that is expected of them within society. However different cultures and societies think and behave differently as they have been brought up with different views on what is appropriate behaviour; therefore humans learn to interact with others who have been socialised similarly to themselves. Consensus sociologists believe that the rules within cultures structure the behaviour of its members. Once you are born into a society you are confronted with their 'social world' and you begin to learn how to appropriately
Socialization is an ongoing process in which individuals obtains a personal identity, learns norms, values and behaviour appropriate to his/her position. People constantly require approval of the things they do, they continually seek to be socially competent and to be accepted by those around them. It is human nature to want to be similar from others in order to be accepted in a certain social spheres but at the same time wanting to be different and unique. There are primary and secondary agents of socialization. The primary agents are those that are basic and fundamental to social beings, these include family and friends from which we learn behaviour at young age; they transmit norms and values to us. The secondary agents are those that are more external to us than family such as social institutions/organisations, these include schools,
The starting point of violence takes place in communities and at home--not at school. Youth take what they hear and see at home and in their communities to school. The environment in some communities and households are positive and the presences of protective factors outweigh the high risk factors. However, there are communities and households where there is a lack of informal social control and high risk factors exist more than protective factors--, which affect youth in a negative manner.
Specifically, experiences such as how our parents raised us and what we were taught at school and by our culture, were seen as having the ability to mold and change us throughout our lives (Hartney, 2015; Salvatore, 2015). The role of peers in groups plays an important role in how children view society and what self-concept they develop. Children, by their socialization with peers or teachers, learn and develop moral values; accepting or declining behaviours (Howe, 2010). Bronfenbenmer in his Ecological System theory explains that the school a child attends the relationships he builds with his teachers, or providers and community, which are all part of a child’s exo-system, have a considerable amount of influence on his social emotional development. (Weatherby, Buller and McGinnis, 2009). In the case when social emotional development influences child behaviour, it can lead to aggressive violent actions including the act of killing such as Jeffery Dahmer and Gary Ridgway who during their school lives suffered by their classmates’ rejection and failed to be part of their class (Dahmer, 1994 and Montaldo,
Students’ identities are changed after attending educational institutions, which influence one’s identity because that institution shared or state such values. As student tries to fit and get along with other students in that institution they become someone who they never been, or have never thought of becoming one. If they are attending a military institution such as The Citadel, they must follow many rules, to be an “ideal” man at the Citadel. Which change certain behaviors and beliefs from their personality. This behaviors and belief are passed on by the upperclassmen to the new cadets, and if the new cadets don’t follow them they will not be allowed to fit with rest of the cadets. The upperclassmen teach the difference of wrong and right which he feels according to his views and force the new cadet to think in same way. So, Faludi says that, “the group mentality that pervades The Citadel assures that any desire on the part of a cadet to speak out about the mounting violence will usually be squelched by the threat of ostracism and shame…The power and authoritarianism of the peer group at The Citadel is exceptional because the college gives a handful of older students leave to “govern” the others as they see fit” (81). Which means that cadets are trained to think in a certain situation in a certain way. Each cadet is trained to tolerate pain and humiliation, but are not allowed to complain about it to anyone. Violence is a way to create a bond among
A Critical Incident analysis of Symbolic Violence” examines a prevailing theme of symbolic violence within the school system. An important example from the text is when Herr and Anderson examined Mrs. R’s and Mr. Y’s classroom and the environment the students were learning in. To begin, Mrs. R perpetuates that her students cannot be helped, she is authoritative, and operates on this idea of respect, however, fails to give respect back to her students (Herr & Anderson, 2003). The text explains this as she is failing to recognize her students’ abilities, and by doing so created a hostile environment of the students not wanting to be there, or wanting to learn (Herr & Anderson, 2003). Mrs. R was working in a symbolically violent environment that was not working to help her student learn. On the other hand, Herr and Andersons analysis of Mr. Y showed the difference in quality. Mr. Y was respectful to his students. He worked with the students to ensure through their student-teacher relationship was respectful. Through this respect and mutual understanding, Mr. Y was able to push his student to thrive (Herr & Anderson, 2003). Thusly, we can begin to see how schools perpetuate the social hierarchy system (Cruz, 2018). This support for the “dominate” ideology does not allow for others who do not fit into the dominate culture to thrive properly, and as a result has an effect on the level of success people can reach if are
These expectations are first taught in childhood, parents passing on their wisdom and experience to their children to ensure that they can mature into respectable adults. Children are expected to act accordingly to certain behaviours, usually acted upon because of peer pressure, such as dating young girls. Research shows that those who become school shooters are unable to follow these expectations, “The candidate cannot keep up a proper relationship, girls often refuse to date him or break up after a few dates because he is scary, impulsive (in a bad way), lacking in empathy, unable to conceal his rage about being marginalized” (Fast, 2008). This provides a reasonable explanation as to why some teenagers become mass murderers, they have low self-esteem and a poor self-image, they see themselves as failures as they cannot keep up with what is accepted by their friends and family. Additionally, “A number of shooters lived in tight-knit Christian communities where there were strict rules that were narrowly enforced, which encouraged the marginalization of the misfit”, indicating that teenagers put under the restrictions and limitations of their religious communities influenced them to act rebellious and become school shooters (Fast, 2008). To conclude, the expectations posed on by certain cultures and societies
Teen Violence is a big dilemma in today’s society. Violent behaviors usually start from family and peers, as well as teens observing it at there neighborhoods or communities. These behaviors are reinforced by what youth see on television, on the Internet, in video games, movies, music videos, and what they hear in their music. When children are disciplined with severe corporal punishment or verbal abuse, or when they are physically or sexually abused, or when they witness such behavior in their home, it is not surprising that they behave violently toward others. Teen Violence has had such an impact in our youth today that it leads many destructive things and that’s why we have so much violence today.
Some people today feel that they are isolated from their own community. In Oak Park, Illinois, third through eighth graders took a survey. Roughly 42% of them said they felt excluded or embarrassed socially by their classmates. Another 32% stated that they were bullied by their piers. With all these emotions going through them at such a young and developing age, it can cause serious damage with the way the kids and young teens look at life. With them feeling removed from their school community and friend groups, they may act out in violent ways against those who have made them feel this way. For example, there have been many stories in the news regarding students who bring weapons to school with the intent of harming others. Another result
According to sociocultural thought, human activity like learning and behavior are impacted by individual, social and contextual issues. Humans are considered to be social and reflexive in nature and this causes human thought and behavior to be altered by the complexities of that social world. Therefore when studying any phenomenon, it is important to keep in the mind the context in which it took place. The focus on the role of social dynamics ensures that a holistic view of the phenomenon is obtained. At times the interplay of social dynamics affects the outcome of a phenomenon.

The term socialization can be defined as the process in which individuals learn the behavioral patterns that are most likely accepted and tolerated in society. This process includes the learning values in which children are taught and they develop the social values of their parents or guardians just by observing them. Socialization occurs from the birth of the individual and continues throughout their life. Socialization is classified as one of the most important process in the family. Of all the major sociological perspectives, symbolic interactionism has probably developed the most detailed theory of socialization, Haralambos, Holborn. Sociology -
Statistics indicate many aggressors at some point or another have witnessed acts of violence. During childhood, these observed behaviors can have a major impact and influence on adolescent and adult attitudes, perception of self and others. "Children become more susceptible and prone to negative and dangerous behaviors which can
The nature versus nurture debate is an ongoing debate among social scientists relating to whether ones personality/personal characteristics are the result of his/her inherited genetic traits or the result of environmental factors such as upbringing, social status, financial stability, and more. One of the topics that are discussed among psychologists is the study of violent behavior among people as a whole, and in particular, individuals. Social scientists try to explain why people commit acts of violence through explanation of either side of the nature or nurture schools of thought. However, the overwhelming amount of research done into the relation of violent behavior and the nature versus nurture debate indicated that nurture is the primary explanation to explaining violent behavior because violent traits are learned from adults, someone’s social upbringing is a major factor to why some people are more violent than others, and finally influences from news media, movies, and video games enhance the chance for someone to exhibit violent behavior. In conclusion, violent behavior is a complex issue without a clear explanation that is overwhelmingly supported by the nurture side of the debate.
School violence is a major controversial problem around the world. It plays an important role for the future of children and impacts the environment children are growing up in. The effects of school violence can lead severe mental and physical trauma for both perpetrators and victim along with the loss of human lives. The main cause of school violence is a combination of weak community relations and a lack of a firm hand within schools as well as communities. Our society need to demand that schools must be created safe for our children and no child should live with fear to attend school. If a student is being picked on or bullied, he or she will not want to communicate with others.
